To add an emoji to a WordPress post or page, place the cursor where it should appear and use your computer or phone’s emoji keyboard. Save or publish the content, then check how it looks on the devices your readers use. You usually do not need a plugin just to insert emoji.
Insert emoji with your device’s keyboard
Emoji are characters you add to the text in the editor; WordPress does not require a special emoji setup screen for ordinary posts and pages. WordPress.org’s instructions describe operating-system shortcuts that work in most applications, not only WordPress. The exact shortcut can vary by operating-system version.
- Mac: WordPress.com documents Command-Control-Space to open the character and emoji viewer.
- Windows 8 or newer: WordPress.com documents Windows key + period or Windows key + semicolon.
- Phone or tablet: Open the emoji panel using the emoji control on the device’s on-screen keyboard. Its location and appearance depend on the keyboard.
Choose the emoji, return to the WordPress editor, and save or publish. If a shortcut does not open a picker on your device, use the keyboard’s emoji control or consult the operating system’s current instructions.
Choose between the built-in keyboard and a WordPress plugin
A plugin can add an emoji picker inside the editor, but it is a convenience option rather than a requirement. First identify whether you need help inserting a character or are dealing with a storage or display problem: a picker alone does not fix database encoding or make emoji look identical on every device.

Use Emoji Toolbar in the block editor
- Install and activate Emoji Toolbar from its WordPress.org plugin listing.
- Open a post or page in the block editor and add a paragraph or heading block.
- Select Emoji from that block’s toolbar, then choose an emoji.
The plugin listing says its picker library uses Emoji Mart under the BSD 3-Clause license. If you use a third-party page builder rather than the core block editor, confirm compatibility before relying on the plugin.
Why emoji can look different or go missing
Adding an emoji character and displaying its artwork are separate things. WordPress.org documentation says WordPress uses compatibility scripts for emoji, and WordPress core describes Twemoji as a polyfill for browsers without complete emoji-rendering support. WordPress.com says it uses system emoji where available and Twemoji when a viewer’s device does not support the latest emoji; that description applies to WordPress.com’s hosted rendering, not necessarily every self-hosted WordPress site.

As a result, the same character may have different artwork across platforms, and a viewer’s software may not support a newer emoji. Preview the published page on the devices and browsers that matter to your audience. A difference in artwork does not necessarily mean the character was lost.
Troubleshoot question marks, missing characters, or failed saves
If an emoji turns into a question mark, disappears after saving, or fails to persist, check the database encoding and collation. The Emoji Toolbar plugin listing says native emoji storage needs a utf8mb4 collation. A WordPress.org support-forum thread describes a case involving a database charset set to utf8; that report is an individual troubleshooting clue, not a complete migration procedure.

- Check whether the problem occurs in the editor, only after saving, or only when viewing the published page. This helps distinguish insertion, storage, and rendering issues.
- Ask your hosting provider or a qualified WordPress administrator to inspect the database charset and collation if characters do not persist.
- Do not change a production database’s charset or collation without a suitable backup and a migration plan. A plugin picker cannot, by itself, correct an encoding problem.
WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress are not identical
The keyboard method works at the content-entry level, while rendering behavior depends on the site and the viewer’s environment. WordPress.com’s documented system-emoji and Twemoji behavior describes its hosted service. WordPress.org’s documentation discusses general WordPress emoji support; it does not mean every self-hosted site will render every emoji identically across browsers and devices.
