To get Dolby Atmos from a TV through a soundbar, connect the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port to the soundbar’s matching port, then enable the appropriate audio output and confirm that the source, service, plan, and title support Atmos. If the TV has no ARC/eARC, connect an Atmos-capable player to the soundbar’s HDMI input and its HDMI output to the TV.
Check compatibility before connecting anything
Atmos depends on the complete playback chain, not just the soundbar. Check the exact TV and soundbar manuals for Atmos support, ARC/eARC port labels, supported audio formats, and pass-through behavior. Also check the source device and the service, subscription plan, and individual title. Support can vary by device, plan, and content.

- If you mainly use built-in TV apps, check that the TV can send their Atmos audio to the soundbar.
- If you use an external streaming player, check whether the TV can pass Atmos through or whether the player can connect directly to the soundbar.
- Check the soundbar’s ports: the no-ARC/eARC method requires both an HDMI input and a dedicated HDMI output.
Connect a TV with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Find the TV HDMI port labeled “ARC” or “eARC,” and the soundbar port labeled for TV ARC/eARC. Connect those ports with an HDMI cable.
- On the TV, select the soundbar as the sound output. If the TV offers an eARC setting, enable it when the connected devices support it. Choose Auto or Pass-Through for the audio output if the manufacturer recommends that setting.
- On the soundbar, select the TV/ARC input if it does not switch automatically. Consult the device manuals for model-specific menu names and settings.
- Play a title explicitly marked Dolby Atmos on a compatible device and service. Check the soundbar’s display or indicator for confirmation that it is receiving and decoding Atmos.
Dolby describes ARC as sufficient for many setups and recommends eARC where possible for broader audio-format support. Its connection guidance describes HDMI 2.0 as sufficient for ARC and HDMI 2.1 for eARC, but cable requirements depend on the exact products. Check the manuals before buying a cable; a new one is needed only if the cable you have does not meet the manufacturers’ requirements. Dolby’s TV and soundbar connection guide explains the connection options.

This route works only if the soundbar has an HDMI input and a dedicated HDMI output. It is generally suited to an external streaming player or other source connected directly to the soundbar; it does not route audio from built-in TV apps back to a soundbar over ARC/eARC.

- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
- Connect the Atmos-capable streaming player or other source to an HDMI input on the soundbar.
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Select the soundbar input used by the player. Set the player’s audio output to Bitstream if that option is available and recommended for the device.
- Play Atmos-marked content and check the soundbar’s display or indicator for Atmos decoding. Confirm that the player, soundbar, and TV also support the video format you want to watch.
Dolby recommends connecting source devices directly to soundbar HDMI inputs when possible. Dolby’s soundbar setup guidance covers source connections and playback checks.

Troubleshoot when sound works but Atmos does not
Ordinary audio from the soundbar does not confirm Atmos playback. Check these items in order:

- Title and service: Verify that the selected title is marked Dolby Atmos and that the service, subscription plan, and playback device provide Atmos for that title.
- Source output: For an external player, check that audio is set to Bitstream where applicable, rather than a format that prevents Atmos output.
- TV audio settings: Check that the soundbar is selected as output and that the TV’s ARC/eARC and audio-format or pass-through settings match the manufacturers’ guidance.
- Connection and input: Confirm that the HDMI cable connects the labeled ARC/eARC ports, or that the player is connected to the correct soundbar HDMI input and the TV to the soundbar output.
- Format support throughout: Check whether each device supports the required Atmos format over that connection. Unsupported equipment can cause playback to fall back to Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus.
- Soundbar confirmation: Look for an Atmos display or indicator while the title is playing. Consult the soundbar manual if the indicator behavior is unclear.
Sony’s guidance on Dolby Atmos playback describes format fallback when connected equipment does not support Atmos. Dolby also recommends checking the device, service, plan, and title requirements in its Dolby Atmos home-entertainment guide.
Place the soundbar so its height speakers can work
If the soundbar uses upward-firing height speakers, do not obstruct the space between those speakers and the ceiling. Place the bar below the TV without blocking the picture or the soundbar’s speakers. The exact effect depends on the room and the soundbar design.
