Design damage, healing, and health as one connected system: define how each value works, set how it changes over time, then compare what a class can deal, restore, and withstand during the same encounter. There is no universal damage-to-health ratio that makes a class balanced. The values depend on your game’s action economy, progression, recovery rules, and available resources.
Start by defining what health represents
Choose how a character’s maximum health is determined and when it changes. It might be fixed, tied to class, increase with level, depend on an attribute, or combine several of those factors. State the rule precisely, including when players calculate a new maximum.

Also decide how other defensive buffers work. Temporary health, shields, damage reduction, and extra lives may operate differently from ordinary health. Specify whether they count toward a limit, absorb damage before health, or use separate rules. A cap on healing or damage is not automatically the same thing as a maximum-health rule.

Define how damage is calculated and applied
For every damage source, tell players what is rolled or calculated, which modifiers apply, when the result takes effect, and whether it targets one character or several. Explain how resistance, vulnerability, mitigation, and any damage cap interact with the result.

Dungeons & Dragons offers a rules example, not a universal template. Its 2014 Basic Rules say that weapons, spells, and harmful monster abilities specify damage, which is rolled and modified according to the rules: D&D Beyond Basic Rules 2014: Combat. Keep examples from different editions distinct; a rule in one edition should not be silently carried into another game.
Choose how the class’s health progresses
Health progression affects how much incoming damage a character can survive. If the class gains health by level or attribute, compare that growth with the damage characters are expected to face at the same stage of play.

In the 2024 D&D Basic Rules, class and Constitution modifier determine first-level maximum hit points, and class also determines later gains. Using the fixed-value option, a Barbarian starts with 12 plus their Constitution modifier and gains 7 plus that modifier at each later level; a Wizard starts with 6 plus their Constitution modifier and gains 4 plus that modifier at each later level. These are edition-specific D&D rules, not suggested values for other systems. See D&D Beyond Basic Rules 2024: Creating a Character.

If ordinary healing cannot raise health above its maximum, give players an example of the limit: a character missing fewer health points than a healing effect restores recovers only the amount they were missing. The D&D 2024 Basic Rules use this approach: current hit points decrease as damage is subtracted, and healing restores current hit points only up to the maximum. The rules also describe resistance and vulnerability as changes to damage received, which affect how much damage a character effectively withstands. See D&D Beyond Basic Rules 2024: Playing the Game.
Compare performance over the same encounter
Evaluate damage, healing, and survivability over a shared time window, such as one encounter of an expected length. Account for the actions a character spends to attack or heal, limited-use abilities, and recovery between encounters. If the class has area attacks as well as single-target attacks, compare both rather than judging it by one damage figure.

- Damage: expected damage per action or round, with assumptions stated, including target count and resource expenditure.
- Healing: amount restored per action or round, its cost, and limits on repeated use.
- Durability: maximum health and effective survivability against the damage characters commonly face.
- Progression: how damage, healing, and health change at early, middle, and late stages.
- Recovery: what the class can regain between encounters and how much rest or other recovery it needs.
These are comparison dimensions, not a published formula or universal benchmark. The cited D&D rules establish how that game handles particular values; they do not establish a balance ratio for every RPG.
Playtest at multiple progression points
Test representative low-, middle-, and high-progression versions of the class against the same kinds of threats and encounter lengths expected for those stages. Record damage dealt, healing used, resources spent, and how often the character is incapacitated or needs recovery. Adjust the mechanics and test again before describing the class as balanced; a calculation alone cannot establish how the rules will play at the table.

Keep edition-specific examples clearly labeled
The D&D 2014 rules are a separate example from the 2024 rules. The 2014 Basic Rules also describe damage specified by the relevant weapon, spell, or ability and healing that cannot restore hit points beyond maximum; consult the applicable edition rather than combining its procedures with 2024 details: D&D Beyond Basic Rules 2014: Combat.
