You can add M3U-based channels to Plex Live TV & DVR by putting a third-party M3U proxy—such as xTeVe or Threadfin—between your playlist and Plex. The proxy presents the streams as a tuner-like device; XMLTV supplies the separate programme listings. Plex’s documented XMLTV workflow does not describe importing a raw M3U playlist directly, so this is a community software integration, not a built-in Plex M3U tuner feature.
What you need—and what each input does
The M3U playlist contains channel stream entries. XMLTV is a separate XML-based format for TV listings: Plex Support describes it as “an XML-based file format, which is designed for describing TV listings.” Without guide data, you may have channels but not scheduled programme titles and times.

- An M3U playlist: a file or endpoint containing streams you are authorized to access.
- XMLTV guide data: a local file or URL, if you want programme listings. Plex says it does not provide XMLTV files to users; its own guide data is available in many countries through Plex Pass.
- An M3U proxy: software that reads the playlist and exposes selected channels to Plex in a tuner-like form. It organizes the URLs and metadata you supply; it does not provide channels or a content subscription.
- Plex Media Server with Live TV & DVR available. Plex’s DVR documentation says DVR functionality is available with Plex Media Server v1.16.1 or newer; check current Plex documentation and your server version before setup.
Plex lists IceTV for Australia, Schedules Direct for Canada and the United States, and XMLTV.org for information about sources in many European countries as examples of guide-data starting points. These examples are from Plex’s XMLTV article, last modified April 9, 2020, and are not a guarantee of present coverage or endorsement. Choose the software-proxy route, not an OTA tuner
xTeVe describes itself as an M3U proxy for Plex DVR and documents playlist and XMLTV processing, filtering, channel mapping, ordering and stream proxying. Threadfin describes itself as a proxy based on xTeVe and lists M3U/XMLTV updating and mapping features. Review the projects’ current documentation for installation steps, interface labels and Plex compatibility, since those can change: xTeVe project and Threadfin project.

- 4 tuners (2 ATSC 3.0, all 4 ATSC 1.0)
At a high level, configure the proxy to read your playlist, attach or load guide data as required by its mode, match channel identifiers to programme listings, filter channels you do not want, and make the proxy reachable by the Plex server. xTeVe documents both Plex-managed EPG and XMLTV-output modes; the guide source or endpoint you enter in Plex depends on which mode you choose.
A physical tuner such as a SiliconDust HDHomeRun is a separate route for receiving over-the-air broadcast television. It is not the M3U importer. OTA viewing requires a compatible physical tuner and antenna; antenna suitability depends on location, available channels and transmitter distance and direction. See Plex’s supported DVR tuners and antennas for regional and system compatibility.

Configure the proxy before adding it to Plex
- Provide the playlist. Enter the authorized M3U file or endpoint in the proxy using the project’s current setup instructions.
- Set up the guide. Load XMLTV data if your chosen proxy mode expects it. Make sure the guide channel identifiers can be matched to the playlist channels; names alone may not be enough for reliable mapping.
- Filter and map the lineup. Keep the channels you want exposed to Plex and map them to the correct guide entries. Check the selected mode’s documentation to determine whether the proxy will expose XMLTV or Plex will manage guide data.
- Make the proxy reachable from Plex Media Server. The proxy and server must be able to communicate over your network. Keep the proxy output active while using Live TV or recordings.
These projects are third-party software, and their interfaces, supported versions and installation processes may change. Their feature descriptions establish playlist and guide handling, not compatibility with every stream provider or Plex client.

Add the proxy in Plex Live TV & DVR
Plex’s published XMLTV walkthrough was last modified April 9, 2020, so labels may differ in a newer server release. The documented setup flow is:

- Watch live TV on multiple devices simultaneously throughout your home with our Multi room Multi user network tuner solution
- Full whole-home DVR by connecting a USB hard drive - no subscription required (paid TV guide available for advanced auto-record features)
- Compatible with Android, FireTV, AppleTV, Roku, Sony, XBox, iPhone, iPad, Win10/11, Mac
- 4 tuners (ATSC 1.0)
- In Plex Web, open Settings > Live TV & DVR and start the DVR/tuner setup.
- Let Plex search for compatible devices. If it does not find the proxy, use the manual device-location option and enter the location provided by the proxy. Plex recommends keeping a network tuner at a stable local address, using a static address or DHCP reservation.
- Select the proxy when it appears as a tuner, then continue through the signal and country selections in the wizard.
- When prompted for guide data, select the XMLTV option if your proxy setup supplies XMLTV for Plex. Enter the local file path or URL and a name, then continue. If you chose a Plex-managed EPG mode in the proxy, follow that mode’s instructions instead.
- Review the channel mappings. Correct mismatches and disable channels you do not want in Plex, then finish setup.
Plex’s XMLTV article says that choosing an XMLTV source requires deleting an existing DVR configuration and creating it again. If you already have a DVR set up and do not see the XMLTV choice, consult the current Plex instructions before removing the existing configuration.
For the official walkthrough, see Plex Support: Using XMLTV for guide data. Plex’s article states: “Plex itself does not provide XMLTV data to users.”

Verify channels, listings and playback
- Channels are missing: confirm the proxy output is active and reachable from the Plex server, then check that the proxy has loaded the intended playlist and is not filtering out those entries.
- Listings belong to the wrong channel: review the proxy’s channel-to-guide mapping and Plex’s channel mappings. A correct stream entry does not guarantee a correct XMLTV match.
- Guide is empty: check that Plex can access the local XMLTV path or URL and that the proxy is exposing the guide endpoint expected by its selected mode.
- Playback or recording fails: check stream format and codec compatibility, network reachability, provider concurrency limits and the server’s ability to transcode for the client. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every third-party stream.
Plex’s documented warnings about weak antenna signal and tuner contention concern OTA tuner setups, not necessarily M3U streams. Plex also notes that low-powered NAS hardware without transcoding capability can cause playback problems for some recordings. Treat these as relevant server or physical-tuner checks, not as a diagnosis that applies to every proxy stream. See Plex’s tuner and antenna guidance and its DVR setup notes.
