Choose how captions will reach YouTube
YouTube documents two caption workflows for live events: captions embedded in the video stream, or captions sent separately using supported software and HTTP POSTs. The right choice depends on your encoder or captioning software and how it supplies caption data.

YouTube says the 608/708 standard can support up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track for the embedded 608/708 workflow. Confirm the track limitation against your needs before choosing it. YouTube’s live caption requirements describe both workflows.

- Open the live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Find the caption setting. Open the stream’s Settings, select the Setup tab, and locate Closed captions.
- Select the embedded option. Choose Embedded 608/708 and save.
- Configure the encoder. Select EIA-608/CEA-708 output; the option may be labelled “embedded.” Make sure caption data is actually produced and included in the outgoing stream. Depending on the setup, the encoder may read captions from a file or encode them in real time.
- Verify captions in the live preview. Check the preview, then confirm that viewers can enable captions and see the text. Selecting the YouTube option alone does not supply caption content.
Exact encoder controls vary by product. YouTube’s documentation establishes the required caption standard, but does not endorse a particular encoder model.

Use the HTTP captions workflow instead
- In Live Control Room, open the stream’s caption settings and turn on Closed captions.
- In Advanced settings, add a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay, as directed in YouTube’s event instructions for this workflow.
- Copy the Captions Ingestion URL and enter it in supported captioning software.
- Configure that software to send caption data using HTTP POSTs, then test the result in the YouTube preview and with a viewer account.
Check the current interface labels and confirm that your chosen software supports YouTube’s workflow before deployment. Treat the ingestion URL as sensitive stream configuration and avoid exposing it publicly. The HTTP instructions are part of YouTube’s live-event guidance, not a separately documented 24/7 mode. Plan for continuous operation and restarts
YouTube’s caption instructions explain event setup but do not establish that captions remain continuous throughout an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast or automatically resume after a stream restart. Test at the actual stream’s start, while it is running, and across any planned session boundary or encoder restart. If a restart is part of your setup, verify that both video and caption delivery recover.

Keep archiving separate from caption continuity planning: YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a single complete archive. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance for the archive qualification.

- No caption option or the wrong setting appears: confirm you opened the intended stream in Live Control Room and checked its Settings > Setup tab. Interface labels may change, so verify them in the current Studio interface.
- The setting is enabled but no words appear: check that the encoder is sending caption data in EIA-608/CEA-708 format, or that supported HTTP caption software is actively sending data. The setting does not create text.
- Captions appear in the encoder but not for viewers: inspect the YouTube preview and verify the end-to-end signal; confirm viewers can turn captions on. Check stream health and any messages in Live Control Room.
- HTTP captions do not arrive: verify that the software supports YouTube’s HTTP workflow, that it is using the correct Captions Ingestion URL, and that the event’s broadcast delay is set to 30 or 60 seconds as instructed.
- Captions stop after a restart or session transition: check whether the encoder or caption software resumed sending data for the new session. YouTube does not document uninterrupted 24/7 caption continuity as a guaranteed behavior, so validate the precise restart path you plan to use.
- You need multiple languages: note that although the 608/708 standard can support up to four language tracks, YouTube currently supports one caption track for this embedded workflow.
