How to Add Clear Enemy Health Cues to a Tabletop RPG

Enemy health can be clear without showing exact hit points. First make each foe identifiable, then track its damage consistently, and agree with players how much of its condition to reveal. A spoken description, simple marker, or virtual tabletop setting can communicate anything from “wounded” to an exact HP total—without changing the game’s rules unless the group chooses to.

Choose how much health information players should see

Before combat, decide what information helps your group make choices while preserving the uncertainty you want. Most DMs track monster hit points privately, according to the 2024 D&D Basic Rules. That is a common approach, not a requirement for every tabletop RPG or group.

  • Exact current HP: Players can see the number and calculate remaining health precisely.
  • A bar without numbers: Players can judge progress roughly without seeing an exact total.
  • Named condition bands: Use a few consistent states, such as uninjured, hurt, badly hurt, and near defeat.
  • A named rules threshold: Announce a state when an enemy crosses a meaningful threshold in your game. In some D&D editions, “bloodied” has been used for this purpose; it is not a universal RPG rule.
  • No player-facing cue: Keep the numbers and condition private, using narration only when you choose.

A threshold can support tactical decisions without revealing exact totals. In a historical D&D article, “Game Transparency” in Dragon 375 (May 19, 2009), Chris Sims advised: “Tell the players as soon as the monster becomes bloodied, and if that state changes, let them know.” Treat this as advice about D&D-era terminology, not a rule that applies to every game.

Make each enemy easy to identify

When several similar foes are in a fight, players need to know which one took damage before any health cue can help. Give each enemy a stable, memorable identifier before play: a scar, a distinctive helmet, or a letter such as A, B, or C. Put that identifier on the miniature or token and use the same one in your notes.

The 2024 D&D Basic Rules suggest distinguishing otherwise identical monsters with unique features or stickers marked A, B, and C. Once identities are clear, connect each damage record to the matching enemy. This prevents damage dealt to one foe from accidentally being assigned to another.

Track damage consistently

Pick one record-keeping method and use it throughout the encounter. The 2024 D&D guidance notes that recording damage taken can be easier than repeatedly subtracting from each monster’s starting HP. You can write the accumulated damage beside each enemy’s letter on an initiative list; doing so need not reveal remaining HP to players.

  1. Assign each enemy a stable label, such as “scar,” “helmet,” or “B.”
  2. Use that same label in your initiative order, damage notes, and any marker or card at the table.
  3. Record either damage taken or current HP, whichever is easier for you to maintain accurately.
  4. If you announce named condition bands, decide what each band means for the specific enemy or game before using the cue.

Use clear cues at an in-person table

A cue can be as simple as saying “the scarred one is badly hurt.” Other low-cost options include a written label, paper token, index card, or marker beside the miniature. The D&D Basic Rules also mention index cards, sticky notes, tokens, and colored plastic rings as reminders for conditions.

Keep the meaning of each marker explicit. A ring or token might identify enemy B, show a health band, or mark a condition such as poisoned—but players should not have to guess which. If a marker could be confused with a health cue, label it or explain its meaning.

  • Pair colors with a letter, word, icon, or distinctive shape.
  • Use homemade paper reminders or other simple materials; special accessories are not necessary.
  • If you narrate injury instead of displaying it, use consistent terms when players need to interpret the description tactically.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines state: “Color alone should never be used to represent information.” Although written for games, the principle is useful for tabletop cues too: combine color with text, a symbol, shape, or verbal description so the meaning is not carried by color alone.

Set enemy-health visibility in a virtual tabletop

Virtual tabletops may offer several ways to show enemy health, and the controls vary by platform. Fantasy Grounds documents options for displaying enemy health as a dot, bar, hover display, tooltip, or no player-facing display in its 5E Campaign Options.

  • Persistent bar: Gives players an immediate visual estimate of health.
  • Hover or tooltip display: Makes the information available on request or interaction, rather than constantly visible.
  • No display: Keeps health hidden from players.

Choose the mode that matches the disclosure level you agreed on, then check what players actually see. A GM’s view and a player-facing view may differ. Other virtual tabletops may use different controls and labels.

Compare cue options before choosing

There is no single best cue for every table. Consider how precise the information should be, how readily players should see it, how much upkeep it creates, and whether it remains understandable without relying on color or small text.
