How to Add, Change, or Remove a Samsung Contact Photo

To put a picture on a Samsung contact, open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, tap the image or avatar area at the top, choose Camera or Gallery, adjust the crop, and save. Depending on your Galaxy model and software, you may also see a Galaxy avatar or preset icon. The same editor lets you replace or delete the picture later.

The exact buttons are not identical on every Galaxy. Samsung’s current guidance separates Android 15–16 from Android 14 and earlier, and features such as profile cards are model-dependent. The instructions below identify those differences so you can follow the screen in front of you.

What you need before adding a picture

The task uses Samsung’s built-in Contacts app; you do not need a separate editor or paid service. Have the following ready:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Galaxy phone or tablet with the Samsung Contacts app.
  • An existing contact that is stored somewhere that supports contact images.
  • A picture in Gallery, or permission to use the camera for a new picture.
  • A few seconds to crop the image and save the contact record.

Contacts saved only on a SIM card are the important exception. Samsung says a SIM-only contact cannot be assigned a photo. Move that contact to phone storage or an account such as Google, then edit it. You can check the destination while viewing or editing the contact; Samsung’s U.S. guide identifies Phone and Google as possible storage locations.

If the contact came from a Google account, Samsung notes that the image set for that Google contact becomes its profile avatar under Android’s account behavior. In practice, the picture may be controlled by Google rather than kept as a separate phone-only copy, so changes can appear on other devices using that account.

Add a picture to a Samsung contact

Standard method on current Galaxy software

  1. Open the Contacts app. If you are in the Phone app, open its Contacts tab instead.
  2. Tap the person whose record you want to personalize.
  3. Tap Edit, shown as a pencil icon on many models.
  4. Tap the image, silhouette, or avatar field above the contact’s name. On newer software, there may be a small edit control over the avatar; on older software, tapping the avatar itself opens the editor.
  5. Choose an image source. Samsung lists Camera, Gallery, a Galaxy avatar, and an available preset icon as options, although every model will not show every choice.
  6. If a crop frame appears, drag the image to center the face or other identifying detail. Pinch to zoom, and resize the frame when the interface allows it.
  7. Tap Done. Some versions then show another confirmation or save screen; complete that step and tap Save for the contact.

Return to the contact’s details after saving. The new image should appear beside the name in Contacts. It may also appear beside the caller’s name when that person calls, depending on the phone’s dialer and display settings.

If your screen uses Android 15 or 16 controls

Samsung’s current instructions describe an edit control directly on the avatar for Android 15–16 devices. Select the contact, choose Edit, and tap that control to open the image choices. Select Camera, Gallery, an avatar, or an icon, finish the crop, then save the avatar and the contact. If the screen asks you to save twice, the first save applies the avatar selection and the second saves the contact record; complete both.

If your phone runs Android 14 or earlier

On Android 14 and earlier, Samsung describes tapping the avatar itself rather than a separate edit button. The remaining sequence is the same: choose a source, crop if prompted, tap Done, and save the contact. A Galaxy model may retain older labels even after an update, so use the control that opens the image picker rather than relying only on its icon.

Choose the best image source

Source Use it when What to expect
Gallery You already have a clear portrait or identifying image. You can reposition and crop the existing file before saving.
Camera You want to take a new picture immediately. Camera permission may be requested; retake the photo if the preview is poorly lit or blurred.
Galaxy avatar You prefer an illustrated or privacy-friendly representation. Availability depends on Galaxy model and software; it is not shown on every device.
Preset icon You want a color or symbol instead of a photograph. The icon choices vary by software and can be changed later from the same editor.

A square, well-lit image generally survives the circular or rounded display used in contact lists better than a wide landscape photo. Keep the important part of the picture near the center because the crop may remove the edges.

Change an existing contact picture

  1. Open Contacts and select the person.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap the current photo or avatar. On Android 15–16, use the edit control displayed on the avatar; on Android 14 and earlier, tapping the avatar usually opens the same editor.
  4. Select Gallery, Camera, a different avatar, or an icon.
  5. Reposition or resize the crop frame, tap Done, and finish every Save prompt.

The replacement applies to that contact record. If the record is supplied by Google or another synchronized account, the account may propagate the new image to other devices, and a later sync can replace a local change with the account’s version.

Remove a contact picture without deleting the contact

  1. Open the contact in Contacts and tap Edit.
  2. Open the photo or avatar control.
  3. Tap the minus or remove control in the avatar editor. The symbol may be placed on the edge of the image.
  4. Confirm with Done if shown, then tap Save on the contact.

Removing the image leaves the name, number, notes, and other fields intact. If no minus control appears, look for a three-dot menu or a Remove photo command in the avatar editor; labels vary by model. Deleting a picture is different from deleting the contact, so do not use the contact’s main delete command.

Avatar, contact photo, and profile card: what is different?

Galaxy software can expose more than one personalization feature, and the names are easy to confuse.

SAMSUNG Galaxy S23 5G, US Version, 128GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.

Contact avatar

The avatar is the small image, illustration, or icon attached to a person’s contact record. Samsung describes it as appearing in Contacts and near the caller’s name. Adding a Gallery photo through the steps in this guide is the usual avatar workflow.

Profile card

Some Android 15–16 Galaxy devices also offer a profile card. Samsung describes the card as a larger identity display that can fill the incoming-call screen, and supported media may include a still image, GIF, or video. The card is separate from the basic avatar, so setting one does not guarantee that the other changes.

Availability depends on the model, software build, and region. Samsung India states: “Available feature and settings may vary by software version and phone model.” If you do not see a profile-card option, your device may not support it or the feature may be located in a different menu.

Your own shared profile card

Samsung’s profile-card feature can include controls for sharing your own card and choosing an audience. That is not the same as adding a private picture to another person’s contact record. Use the contact editor for someone else’s entry; use profile-card settings only when you intend to control how your own information is presented or shared.

Where the contact is saved determines what you can do

SIM contacts

A contact stored only on a SIM cannot receive a photo under Samsung’s guidance. Export or move it to Phone storage or an account that supports images, then reopen it in Contacts and use the edit steps. The move command’s wording differs by model; look in Contacts’ menu for Manage contacts, Move contacts, or an import/export option.

Phone storage

A contact saved to the phone is edited locally. It can carry an image without requiring an online account, but it may not appear on a replacement phone unless you transfer or back up the contact.

Google account

Google-saved contacts can synchronize across devices signed in to that account. Samsung notes that an image set for a Google contact becomes the profile avatar under Android behavior. Make changes from the account-backed record you intend to keep; otherwise, a duplicate local record can make it look as if the picture disappeared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung Cloud and other synchronization

Samsung says contacts can synchronize through Samsung Cloud or Google. Synchronization of the contact record does not establish that every image format or every profile-card field will transfer identically between accounts and devices. After changing a picture, verify it on the destination device rather than assuming the visual treatment will match.

Troubleshooting when the picture will not appear

Symptom Likely cause What to try
The image option is missing. The contact is SIM-only, or the current software uses a different avatar control. Move the contact to Phone or Google storage. In Edit, tap the avatar itself or its small edit control.
You select a picture but it is not saved. The crop step or a second save was skipped. Tap Done after cropping, then complete every Save prompt and reopen the contact to verify.
The photo appears on one device but not another. The contacts use different storage locations or synchronization has not completed. Check whether both devices use the same Google or Samsung account, confirm the contact is not a duplicate, and allow synchronization before checking again.
A newer picture keeps reverting. An account-backed contact is receiving its image from the account during sync. Edit the canonical Google or synchronized record, then wait for the account to propagate the change.
The face is cut off. The circular avatar crop removed the edges. Reopen the image editor, zoom out, and move the subject toward the center before saving.
The caller still has no image. The dialer may use a different contact record, or the call display may not show avatars. Search Contacts for duplicates, update the record containing the caller’s number, and test from the matching number.
The profile-card setting is absent. The model, region, or software does not support the feature. Use the standard avatar workflow; do not treat the missing profile-card menu as a failure of contact-photo editing.

Prevent duplicate records and lost pictures

Check the account before creating a second contact

When a photo seems missing, search the person’s name and phone number before creating another entry. Two records for the same person can split numbers, notes, and images. Edit the record that the Phone app uses for incoming calls, then remove or merge the duplicate using the Contacts app’s available contact-management tools.

Keep important contacts off SIM-only storage

SIM storage is designed for basic contact data and is the reason Samsung blocks contact photos there. Store photo-bearing contacts on the phone or in an account that supports them. If you change phones, export or synchronize those records before wiping the old device.

Back up before a major phone change

Samsung and Google provide contact synchronization options, but the sources do not establish identical handling for every image format or profile-card field. Before a factory reset or migration, verify that the contact list and representative pictures are visible on the destination account or device. Keep the original image in Gallery if you may need to recreate the avatar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and practical choices

  • Use an illustration or preset icon for contacts where a real face would reveal more information than necessary.
  • Remember that a photo shown on an incoming-call screen can be visible to people nearby.
  • If you use a shared Google or Samsung account, changes to an account-backed contact may be visible on other signed-in devices.
  • For children, clients, or emergency contacts, choose an image that remains recognizable at the small avatar size rather than one with sensitive background details.

Quick reference by task

Goal Path Important note
Add a picture Contacts → contact → Edit → image/avatar → Camera or Gallery → crop → Done → Save Galaxy avatar and icon choices are optional and model-dependent.
Replace a picture Contacts → contact → Edit → current image/avatar → new source → crop → Save Android 15–16 may use an edit control on the avatar.
Remove a picture Contacts → contact → Edit → image/avatar → minus/remove → Save This does not delete the contact record.
Fix a SIM contact Move or save the contact to Phone or Google, then edit it SIM-only records cannot receive contact photos under Samsung’s guidance.
Use a profile card Open the profile-card feature if your model provides it It is separate from the basic avatar and may support still images, GIFs, or video.

What to expect after saving

The image should be visible in the Contacts list and on the contact’s detail page. Whether it appears in every call screen, messaging view, or synchronized device depends on the app using the record, the account that stores it, and your Galaxy software version. If the image is present in Contacts but absent in one particular screen, the contact was saved successfully; that screen simply may not display avatars or may be using another matching record.
