In established, biologically active garden soil, plants often already have native mycorrhizal fungi, so adding a commercial inoculant is not automatically useful. If soil is severely disturbed, pasteurized, soilless or otherwise depleted, apply a compatible product where young roots or germinating seeds will touch it, follow its label for dose and storage, and test a small area before treating an entire bed.

What mycorrhizal fungi do

Mycorrhizal fungi live in association with plant roots. The plant supplies sugars and other carbon compounds made through photosynthesis; in return, fungal threads extend beyond the root’s normal absorbing zone and can improve access to water and nutrients. Some fungi form structures inside roots, while others attach to the root surface. The useful relationship is a living partnership, not a fertilizer coating that works independently of the plant.

Oklahoma State University Extension estimated in 2016 that mycorrhizal fungi benefit 80 to 90 percent of plant species. That is a broad biological estimate, not a promise that every crop will respond to a retail inoculant. Compatibility varies by plant, fungal type, soil chemistry, moisture and management. A product can contain viable organisms yet produce little practical benefit if the crop is a poor host or the soil conditions prevent colonization.

Mycorrhizae also do not replace compost, balanced fertilization, drainage or disease management. They cannot repair severe compaction, flooding, contamination or a root system that is already failing. Think of an inoculant as a possible way to introduce compatible fungi at a vulnerable planting stage, not as a general-purpose soil cure.

Decide whether your soil needs inoculation

Established garden beds

Long-managed beds with living plants, organic matter and limited disturbance commonly contain resident mycorrhizal fungi. Extension specialist Linda Chalker-Scott of Washington State University has stated that plants form mycorrhizal associations in most soils without additional inoculant. UConn guidance likewise cautions that adding commercial fungi does not necessarily improve an established partnership.

Before buying a product, keep living roots in the soil, reduce unnecessary tillage, maintain organic matter and correct drainage or compaction. These steps support native fungi and improve plant health whether or not you inoculate.

Situations in which inoculation is more plausible

UC Agriculture and Natural Resources identifies extremely disturbed or toxic sites, severely cut subsoil and similarly depleted conditions as the cases in which a response is most plausible. The Royal Horticultural Society notes that compatible fungi may be scarce in peat-free container compost and intensively managed soils. Freshly pasteurized or manufactured growing media can also have little biological community for a young plant to associate with.

  • New beds made from severely disturbed subsoil or imported, biologically inactive fill.
  • Containers filled with pasteurized or soilless media that contain no established host roots.
  • Transplants whose roots were produced in a sterile medium and are being moved into a low-biology site.
  • Plants known to benefit from mycorrhizae when the product is specifically labeled for that host.

These are opportunities to run a careful trial, not proof that inoculation will work. If the soil already supports healthy plants and has not been sterilized or heavily disturbed, the likely return from broadcasting an inoculant is lower.

Prepare the soil before adding fungi

Fungi establish only when roots, oxygen and suitable moisture are present. Prepare the planting site first:

  1. Check drainage. Remove standing water, repair irrigation problems and avoid planting into a permanently saturated pocket.
  2. Relieve compaction. Use a fork or broadfork where appropriate, working only as deeply as needed and avoiding repeated pulverizing tillage.
  3. Maintain organic matter. Incorporate mature organic matter according to your soil and crop needs rather than burying large amounts of fresh material around roots.
  4. Keep a living host. Continuous cover crops, perennial roots or nearby actively growing plants provide the carbon source fungi need.
  5. Plan chemical use. Avoid unnecessary fungicides or biocides around newly inoculated roots, and base fertilizer applications on a soil test.

Heavy applications of phosphorus, nitrogen or zinc can inhibit infection, according to Oklahoma State University Extension. An inoculant will not overcome a flooded, compacted or contaminated site.

Choose an inoculant by biology and label evidence

What to compare Why it matters What to record
Host compatibility Different plants associate with different fungal communities; a product not labeled for your crop may be ineffective. Crop, plant family and application site listed on the label.
Fungal type and viable count A large package is not necessarily a stronger or fresher product. Named organisms, viable propagule information, unit of measure and expiration.
Formulation Granules, powders and liquids have different placement and storage needs. Whether it is intended for seed, root dipping, planting holes, drenching or media incorporation.
Storage and handling Heat, moisture and age can reduce viability. Required temperature, sealed-container instructions and use-by date.
Coverage and cost Concentrating material at roots can use less product than treating a whole bed. Cost per treated plant or area, dose and any reapplication requirement.

Do not transfer a dose from one brand or formulation to another. Oklahoma State University Extension reports rates ranging from about a teaspoon to 50 milliliters, depending on the product and area, and notes that some products require no reapplication while others specify a later treatment. The label for the exact product is the controlling instruction.

How to apply mycorrhizae to transplants, trees and shrubs

Root contact is the central principle. University of Alaska Fairbanks Extension advises placing inoculum where transplant roots will reach it quickly, while the RHS says direct contact with younger roots gives fungi the best chance to establish.

  1. Confirm the label. Check that the product covers the plant species, outdoor or container use and the application method you plan to use.
  2. Measure the labeled amount. Do not estimate by handful or substitute a rate intended for a different formulation.
  3. Prepare the root zone. Dig the hole to the depth and width appropriate for the plant. Break up circling roots only as recommended for that plant, and do not leave roots exposed to sun or wind.
  4. Place inoculum at root contact points. If permitted, dust or coat the damp root ball. Otherwise place the measured material in the planting hole directly beneath and around the root zone. For a bare-root plant, follow the label’s slurry, dip or furrow directions.
  5. Set the plant and backfill. Keep the root collar at the correct level. As soil returns, distribute the inoculant so roots contact it rather than leaving a concentrated pocket against the stem.
  6. Cover promptly. Do not leave powder or granules exposed to wind, ultraviolet light or drying. Cover according to the label.
  7. Water gently. Moisten the root zone enough to settle soil without washing the product away or creating saturation.

Concentrating inoculum near roots generally uses less material than spreading the same small quantity through an entire bed or container. If the label allows only one placement method, use that method rather than improvising.

Container transplants

For a container filled with biologically active potting mix, broad incorporation may dilute a small dose without improving contact. Apply to the root ball or planting hole when the label permits. In a prepared soilless or pasteurized medium, incorporation can be appropriate if the product specifically calls for it.

Trees and shrubs

Place inoculum where new feeder roots will grow, not only on the soil surface around an established trunk. Avoid piling material against the trunk or burying the root flare. A product labeled for annual vegetables is not automatically suitable for woody plants.

How to treat seeds

Seeds need contact during germination, when the first roots are short and vulnerable. Use only a label-approved seed treatment or place the inoculant in the seed furrow or seed zone.

  1. Read whether the product permits direct seed coating, furrow placement or both.
  2. Apply the measured amount evenly so emerging roots encounter it.
  3. Cover the seed and inoculant to protect them from drying and sunlight.
  4. Maintain even moisture without saturating the furrow.

Surface sprays on leaves and compost teas applied after emergence do not put inoculum at the germinating root. University of Alaska Fairbanks Extension specifically emphasizes proximity to those young roots.

Using inoculants in beds and containers

Broad incorporation is justified only when the label specifies it and the medium is being prepared in a way that keeps the organisms viable. Otherwise, place inoculum in each planting hole or in a narrow root-zone band. North Carolina State University reports research use of a small amount in the planting hole or inoculum equal to 10–20 percent of transplant soil volume, while stressing that a little can go a long way. Those figures describe research practice, not a universal consumer dose; follow the product label.

For a large bed, calculate the cost and amount per plant or treated area before mixing. A small package diluted through hundreds of liters of soil may put very little material near any root. If individual placement is impractical, choose a product whose label gives a broadcast rate and incorporation instructions rather than inventing one.

Protect colonization after planting

  • Keep moisture consistent. Water when needed, but let excess drain. Alternating drought and saturation stresses roots and fungi.
  • Limit disturbance. Aggressive tillage can break fungal hyphae and remove the living roots that supply carbon.
  • Avoid unnecessary fungicides. Mycorrhizae are fungi; Oklahoma State University Extension advises avoiding fungicides around inoculated roots unless a disease-management decision makes treatment necessary.
  • Use nutrients carefully. Heavy phosphorus, nitrogen or zinc applications can reduce infection. Do not use fertilizer as a substitute for a soil test.
  • Keep roots alive. Long fallow periods interrupt the plant-fungus partnership. Cover crops or living mulch can maintain host roots when appropriate for the crop.
  • Prevent flooding and compaction. Low oxygen and damaged roots create conditions in which an inoculant cannot establish.

Why an inoculant may not work

The soil already had compatible fungi

Adding more organisms may not change a functioning native community. Healthy plants and undisturbed soil are not evidence of a deficiency.

The product did not reach roots

Broadcasting a tiny dose through a large bed, spraying foliage or leaving granules on the surface separates the organisms from the roots they must colonize.

The crop or fungus was incompatible

Mycorrhizal relationships are not identical across plant families. Check the host list and application site rather than assuming one product suits every vegetable, tree and ornamental.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organisms lost viability

Heat, moisture, expired stock or incorrect storage can reduce viable propagules. More than half of the products examined in one study cited by UC Agriculture and Natural Resources were not viable. Check the package condition, date and storage history.

Soil conditions blocked establishment

Excess fertilizer, fungicide exposure, flooding, compaction, contamination or prolonged absence of living roots can prevent colonization even when the product is viable.

What evidence says about commercial products

Results are variable, so treat marketing claims as hypotheses to test. UConn summarizes a meta-analysis in which roughly 80 percent of commercial treatments produced minimal or no root colonization. A 2025 University of Zürich evaluation found that none of seven home-garden products established symbiosis under its controlled conditions. Controlled tests do not prove that every product fails in every garden, but they show why a guaranteed yield increase or universal “soil improvement” claim is not justified.

Oklahoma State University’s estimate that most plant species can benefit describes the potential of mycorrhizal biology, not the performance of a particular packet. The practical distinction is important: a compatible fungus in the right root zone may help, while an incompatible or nonviable product scattered through established soil may do nothing.

Run a small, fair garden trial

When the likely benefit is uncertain, test before treating the whole property.

  1. Select a uniform section or a group of similar containers.
  2. Use the same seed lot, transplant size, soil preparation, watering and fertilizer for treated and untreated plants.
  3. Apply the inoculant only to the designated treatment group, using the label dose and placement.
  4. Mark plants clearly and record planting date, weather, irrigation and any chemical treatments.
  5. Compare survival, early vigor, root health and harvest over the same period. Do not judge a treatment from one unusually large or small plant.
  6. Repeat in another season or soil area before expanding use, especially if the first difference is small.

A useful trial asks whether the treatment improved your crop under your conditions, not whether the product can make a general promise. If the untreated plants perform equally well, invest first in drainage, organic matter, root-zone protection and sound fertilization.

Practical checklist

  • Is the soil disturbed, pasteurized, soilless or otherwise low in biological activity?
  • Does the label list your crop and the planting situation?
  • Are fungal types, viable counts, expiration and storage instructions provided?
  • Can you place the material directly against young roots or in the seed zone?
  • Have you corrected compaction, flooding and excessive fertilizer?
  • Will you avoid unnecessary fungicides near inoculated roots?
  • Can you compare treated and untreated plants in a small trial?
