Put your music files in an FFmpeg concat playlist, loop that playlist if the stream should repeat, and explicitly map its audio alongside your video or visual source. Then send the output to YouTube over RTMPS using settings suited to your resolution, frame rate, codec, and upload connection. Before going live, test transitions and confirm you have rights for live use: YouTube may interrupt a stream when it detects third-party content.

Prepare the music files and playlist

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a text file containing one audio file per line, in the order you want the tracks to play. Create a plain-text file such as playlist.txt:

file '/path/to/track-1.mp3'
file '/path/to/track-2.mp3'
file '/path/to/track-3.mp3'

Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg, and keep both the playlist file and its referenced tracks accessible to that process. For a local setup, an absolute path makes it clear which files FFmpeg should read. Paths with special characters, including apostrophes, may need escaping according to FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer syntax.

Check compatibility before using stream copy

The concat demuxer treats the listed files as one sequential input and adjusts timestamps between them. FFmpeg’s documentation requires the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases for this approach. Differences can cause errors, gaps, or artifacts; inaccurate duration information can also disrupt transitions, and unequal stream lengths can introduce gaps.

If the tracks differ materially, normalize or transcode them to compatible properties before concatenating. Listen through the transitions after preparing the playlist rather than assuming that a successful command guarantees clean joins.

Decide whether the playlist should repeat

For a finite sequence, read the concat input once. To repeat it indefinitely, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option immediately before the playlist’s -i option. A value of 0 means no repeat.

For example, the input portion for a repeating playlist is:

-stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt

-safe 0 permits paths that the concat demuxer’s safe mode would reject. Use it only with a playlist you control: an untrusted playlist can name files you did not intend FFmpeg to open.

Map the music and visual streams explicitly

When the playlist is one input and video or a visual source is another, select the intended streams with -map. In the example below, input 0 supplies video and input 1 supplies the playlist audio: -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0. This avoids relying on automatic stream selection, which may choose a different audio stream than you intend.

Send the stream to YouTube

Retrieve the RTMPS server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, and use them as the output destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share a command containing it. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room.

This is an illustrative command structure, not a tested, universal command. Replace the example inputs, bitrate, keyframe interval, and RTMPS destination with values that fit your files, FFmpeg build, YouTube settings, and connection.

ffmpeg
  -re -i video-or-visual-input
  -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v YOUR_VIDEO_BITRATE -g YOUR_TWO_SECOND_GOP
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

Choose output settings for the actual stream

YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio over RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. Its recommended video bitrates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the matching row in YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than copying a generic bitrate.

The command uses H.264 and AAC as an example and sets 44.1 kHz stereo audio. The 128 Kbps audio bitrate shown is YouTube’s published recommendation for stereo audio; it is not a guarantee that every source or setup will sound the same. The GOP value must correspond to the actual frame rate and desired two-second keyframe interval. Check your installed FFmpeg build for the requested encoder, and verify that your video input, timestamps, and output settings work together.

-re is shown before the video input to read it at its native rate. Whether that input should be paced this way, whether a still image or video needs its own looping or duration handling, and how the inputs end depend on the source and intended stream length. The sample does not configure every possible visual source.

Test before going live

  1. Start a test stream with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, as YouTube recommends.
  2. Check that the intended visual and playlist audio reach the output and that the sound is audible.
  3. Listen across track changes and playlist boundaries for cuts, silence, gaps, or artifacts.
  4. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and confirm the selected video bitrate is sustainable on your upload connection.
  5. Verify the intended duration: a repeating playlist does not by itself ensure that a separate video input runs indefinitely.

Confirm music rights for live streaming

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A persistent match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license for the music does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Before streaming, confirm that your rights cover YouTube Live, the territories and uses you intend, and any allowlisting needed to avoid Content ID interruption. No particular licensing provider is endorsed here.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg cannot open a playlist track The path is wrong, inaccessible to the FFmpeg process, or not accepted by the playlist parser. Check the spelling, file permissions, and path from the streaming machine; ensure the playlist uses valid concat-demuxer entries.
Concatenation fails or transitions sound wrong Tracks have incompatible streams, codecs, or time bases, or their duration information is inaccurate. Make the inputs compatible by normalizing or transcoding them, then listen through the transitions again.
There is a gap between tracks The files have unequal stream lengths or their timestamps/durations do not join cleanly. Inspect the files’ durations and stream properties; prepare compatible inputs and test the boundary.
The stream has no music or the wrong audio The playlist audio was not selected, or automatic selection chose another stream. Check the input order and explicitly map the intended playlist audio, such as -map 1:a:0 when it is input 1.
YouTube reports poor stream health The bitrate may not suit the resolution, frame rate, codec, or available upload capacity. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the actual video settings and test the connection with representative content.
YouTube interrupts the broadcast A third-party-content match may have triggered action, including while licensed music is playing. Review the rights for live use and ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded recordings around the clock, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.

Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
