How to Add Background Music to a 24/7 Recorded Lecture Stream on YouTube

To add background music to a prerecorded lecture that runs continuously on YouTube, mix the lecture audio and a rights-cleared music track in encoder software, then send that combined feed to YouTube Live. Before going live, confirm the music permission covers live streaming and any replay, test that speech remains clear, and plan for YouTube’s archive limit: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

Before mixing: confirm the music is cleared for this use

Technical setup does not grant music rights. Choose a track whose terms expressly cover your planned YouTube live broadcast and, if you want a replay, its archived video and clips. Check the permitted territory, monetization, duration, attribution requirements, and whether the rights holder can add your channel to YouTube’s Content ID allowlist. Save the applicable license or permission records.

A purchased song, consumer music subscription, track found on another YouTube channel, or music that was previously used in an upload is not, by itself, proof that continuous live streaming and replay are covered. A song can involve separate rights in the sound recording and the underlying composition, with different rightsholders. YouTube for Artists advises coordinating with a label or distributor when using protected music in a live stream: Going live for music channels.

Can you use music from YouTube’s Audio Library?

YouTube describes Audio Library tracks and sound effects as copyright-safe, royalty-free production music for videos. Check the current terms and attribution requirements for the specific track and your planned continuous live use and replay; the Audio Library guidance does not state a blanket guarantee for every 24/7 broadcast and archived replay. See Use music and sound effects from the Audio Library.

Do not rely on YouTube Studio’s video editor to add the music after the fact for a 24/7 broadcast. Its audio-track editing feature applies to videos shorter than six hours, not to mixing a continuous live encoder feed: Add an audio track to your video.

How to mix the lecture and music in an encoder

YouTube’s encoder workflow creates a live stream using encoder software and a stream URL and key. The mixing controls depend on the encoder you choose; the steps below describe the workflow, not YouTube-specific file-loop or ducking settings.

  1. Check live-stream eligibility. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. If this is your first time going live, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Account eligibility requirements and restrictions may also apply. Follow Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the YouTube connection details. In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s destination settings. Treat the key like a password; YouTube says you can reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Add both audio sources. Add the prerecorded lecture and the cleared music file as separate sources in the encoder. Set the music lower than the speech and listen to the outgoing mix. If the encoder offers ducking, you can configure it to lower music when speech is present, but the exact control and settings vary by software. YouTube describes encoder software as a way to manage a stream and supports external audio hardware where a production needs it; a mixer or interface is not required just to combine two files.
  4. Configure the lecture video to repeat. Set up the encoder’s file or playlist playback to repeat the lecture and music as intended. Confirm the audio sources continue through the loop, including at the transition between the end and beginning of the recording. The repeat controls are encoder-specific, so verify them in that software’s documentation rather than assuming they are YouTube Live settings.
  5. Preview and test before the long run. Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the lecture and music are both audible, speech is intelligible, and there are no gaps or abrupt level changes when the recording loops. YouTube recommends test streams and ongoing monitoring. Its streaming tips recommend about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; see Streaming tips.

Plan for replays and long-running streams

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24-hour broadcast is therefore not a guaranteed complete YouTube replay. If keeping an archive matters, make a local recording and consider planned shorter sessions, checking YouTube’s current guidance on archiving live streams.

Monitor the preview and stream status during operation, and check that any local recording is growing as expected. For a continuous service, decide in advance how you will handle session changes and preserve recordings rather than relying on one uninterrupted YouTube archive.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The live stream is replaced, interrupted, or terminated. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A detected match can trigger a warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination; copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also end a stream. Recheck the track’s permissions and, where required, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel in Content ID. A license does not by itself guarantee that automated enforcement will not interrupt delivery. Details are in Copyright issues with live streams.
  • The music is audible but speech is hard to understand. Lower the music source in the encoder, then listen to the actual outgoing mix in the Live Control Room preview. Do not judge levels only from the separate source meters.
  • One source disappears at the loop point. Check the encoder’s repeat or playlist behavior and test a complete playback cycle before leaving the stream unattended. Confirm both audio sources remain active at the transition.
  • The preview buffers or the stream becomes unstable. Check the available upload capacity and leave the bandwidth headroom YouTube recommends—about 20% beyond the stream bitrate. Re-test the connection and monitor the Live Control Room preview.
  • The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording and use planned shorter sessions if complete YouTube archives are important.
  • The stream key no longer works or may be exposed. Verify the encoder destination details in Live Control Room. If the key may have been compromised, reset it there and update the encoder with the new key.

If you do not want an encoder running on a computer at home, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the lecture recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
