To stream a playlist through GStreamer to YouTube Live, connect playlist playback and decoding to separate audio and video encoding branches, combine those encoded streams with flvmux, and send the resulting FLV stream to YouTube’s assigned RTMP or RTMPS ingest address. There is no universal copy-and-run playlist command: the pipeline depends on your media formats, installed plugins, and YouTube stream configuration.
How the streaming pipeline fits together
The job has three parts: choose and play each playlist item, route decoded audio and video into streaming branches, then deliver the multiplexed output to YouTube.

GStreamer’s playbin documentation describes automatic media-type handling, demuxer and decoder selection, and network buffering. But playbin normally chooses local audio and video output sinks. Local playback alone does not send anything to YouTube: a streaming application must redirect decoded output to custom processing bins, or use a more explicit pipeline that handles the streams itself.

Choose a playlist implementation
Use playbin when automatic media handling is useful
playbin can recognize media types and select suitable demuxers and decoders, which can help when playlist items are not all encoded alike. An application can set the next item’s URI using the documented about-to-finish approach. It must also route the audio and video output into custom branches that convert and encode the streams before muxing.
Use explicit decoding when you need more control
An explicit URI-decoding pipeline can give an application direct control over queues, conversions, encoders, and muxing. The trade-off is that it must handle dynamic pads as media streams appear, along with supported formats and stream selection. The right choice depends on how varied the inputs are and how much control you need over transitions, caps, and timing; neither approach removes the need to verify synchronization and playlist behavior on the target system.

Connect encoded audio and video to YouTube
Build the audio and video branches for your inputs
For every playlist item, identify the audio and video streams you want, decode them, and connect each stream to a compatible conversion and encoding branch. Check which elements are installed and confirm negotiated caps match what the chosen encoders accept. The exact encoders, caps, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate cannot be prescribed universally: they depend on your media and GStreamer build, and the references here do not establish a current YouTube-specific encoder profile.
Mux to FLV and deliver over RTMP or RTMPS
GStreamer’s rtmpsink documentation describes delivery to a server via RTMP and requires FLV input. Its example is:

In a playlist application, feed the encoded audio and video branches into flvmux, then connect the muxer to the sink. Confirm the needed elements are available: rtmpsink is part of GStreamer Bad Plug-ins. The GStreamer plugin reference identifies it as sending FLV over RTMP and recommends flvmux over avmux_flv.
Use the ingest details assigned to your YouTube stream
Get the ingest configuration for the actual live stream rather than copying an example endpoint. The YouTube LiveStreams API documentation describes the primary ingestion URL and stream name, and distinguishes RTMP from RTMPS addresses. Use the address appropriate to your configuration and supply the stream name/key securely. Treat it as a secret: do not publish it in a command shared publicly, logs, or screenshots.

Validate the pipeline before relying on it
Test with the target GStreamer release, installed plugins, actual media types, and YouTube stream configuration. Confirm that both streams reach the muxer, timestamps remain usable across playlist transitions, and YouTube accepts the ingest. The component documentation establishes the pipeline roles, but not one tested command that works for every system and playlist.
- Plugin availability: verify the source, decoder, converter, encoder, muxer, and sink elements you intend to use are installed.
- Dynamic pads and caps: check that each decoded audio or video stream links to a compatible branch and that negotiated formats meet encoder requirements.
- Transitions and timing: test the next-URI handoff, stream timestamps, and audio/video synchronization at item changes.
- Ingest acceptance: check that the configured YouTube stream is live and that the destination and secret stream name/key are correct.
Troubleshoot common failures
No YouTube stream appears
Check that playbin output has been redirected into the encoding and muxing branches; its default sinks play locally. Then confirm the actual YouTube ingest address and stream name/key are being used.

The pipeline cannot find an element
The required plugin may not be installed in that GStreamer build. In particular, rtmpsink belongs to Bad Plug-ins. Check the plugin inventory and availability on the target system before designing around an element.
An audio or video branch will not link
Inspect the stream type, dynamic pad, and negotiated caps. The selected decoder’s output may not match the conversion or encoder branch; adapt the branch to the installed elements and actual media rather than assuming one fixed format.
YouTube rejects the connection or playback breaks at a playlist change
Verify the assigned RTMP or RTMPS destination and confidential stream name/key, then test each transition for valid timestamps, continuous audio/video, and ingest acceptance. A command that works with a test source does not establish that a playlist pipeline will work unchanged.
