Use Amazon’s Parent Dashboard to share eligible apps and books with a child profile: open Content, select the child, choose Amazon Kids+ Subscription content or Amazon content, and switch on each title. You can also change these permissions from a compatible Fire Tablet or Fire TV. The exact menu labels can differ by device, app version, and marketplace.

What you can add, and where each title appears

Amazon separates content into two management areas. Choosing the correct area is the key to finding a title that is already available to your household.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Parent Dashboard category What it contains What you need
Amazon Kids+ Subscription content Apps, books and other titles included with the household’s Kids+ subscription An active Kids+ subscription in a supported marketplace
Amazon content Eligible apps and books the adult account has purchased or otherwise owns The title must be eligible for sharing with a child profile

These are two content sources, not competing products. A Kids+ title belongs in the subscription list, while a qualifying purchase belongs in Amazon content. A title can still be absent after you check both lists because age limits, device support, licensing, country and other eligibility rules apply.

Sharing a title changes that child profile’s permission; it does not move ownership to the child or cancel an adult purchase. Likewise, turning a title off removes the profile’s access but does not cancel a Kids+ subscription or refund a purchase.

Before you start

  • Have the Amazon account that manages the child profile’s household settings ready. Parent Dashboard requires you to sign in to that account.
  • Confirm that the child profile already exists on a compatible device. Amazon Kids profiles can be used on supported Fire Tablet, Fire TV, Kindle e-reader and Alexa devices, although the available features differ by device.
  • Decide whether the item comes from Kids+ or from an adult purchase. This determines which Content category you should open.
  • Check that the device is connected to the internet. The profile may need to synchronize before a newly shared title appears.
  • Make sure the child’s age, content filters and marketplace are appropriate. A title can be owned by the adult account but still be unavailable to the child because of those limits.

A Fire tablet is optional, not mandatory. If you already have another compatible device, you can manage the profile in a browser or in the Parent Dashboard mobile app. Amazon Kids is the profile experience and can be created at no additional cost on compatible devices; Amazon Kids+ is the separate paid subscription that adds premium, kid-focused content. You do not need Kids+ to share every eligible purchase, but you do need an active subscription to use titles supplied through the Kids+ catalog.

Add apps and books in Parent Dashboard

1. Open Parent Dashboard

  1. In a web browser, open Amazon’s Parent Dashboard and sign in to the Amazon account that administers the child profile.
  2. Alternatively, open the Amazon Kids+ Parent Dashboard app and sign in with the same account.

Parent Dashboard is the primary route because it exposes the full content list and the profile permissions in one place. Amazon also provides on-device controls, but their names and placement vary more widely.

2. Open Content and choose the child

  1. Select Content in Parent Dashboard.
  2. At the top of the page, open the child-profile selector and choose the child who should receive the title.

Always check the selected child before changing a switch. Each profile has its own content permissions, so turning on a book for one child does not automatically share it with a sibling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Choose the correct content source

Select Amazon Kids+ Subscription content when the app or book is supplied through Kids+. Select Amazon content when it is an eligible purchase or other qualifying item from the adult Amazon account.

If you do not see a title in one list, check the other list before assuming it is unavailable. A purchased book will not be listed as subscription content, and a Kids+ title will not necessarily be listed among purchased Amazon items.

4. Turn the title on

  1. Browse or search the selected list for the app or book.
  2. Use the switch beside the title to turn access on.
  3. Repeat for every title you want the child to use.

The same switch removes access. Return to the child’s Content list and turn a title off when it should no longer appear in that profile. Removing access does not necessarily cancel a purchase or a subscription; it changes the child profile’s permission.

5. Allow time for synchronization

Have the child leave and reopen the profile, or return to the profile’s home screen, so the device can refresh its permissions. A newly shared app or book may need to download before it can be opened. If it remains absent, use the troubleshooting section below rather than repeatedly toggling the same switch.

Let a child request additional titles from the store

Sharing a title yourself and allowing a child to request a title are separate permissions. If the child needs to ask for an app or book from the store, enable Store in that child’s settings.

Enable Store in the child’s settings

  1. Open Parent Dashboard and select the child profile.
  2. Open the child’s settings and find the Store permission.
  3. Turn Store on, then review any approval or purchasing controls presented for your account.

Amazon’s mobile instructions may place the control under Settings, the child profile and Additional Content. If your app does not show the exact same path, look for the setting named Store or Additional Content inside that child’s profile.

Store access does not guarantee that every adult-store listing can be requested. Age filters, device compatibility, marketplace availability and the title’s own eligibility rules still apply. Review each request before approving it. Store permission is therefore a discovery and request setting, not a blanket pass for the entire Amazon catalog.

Use Expanded selection carefully

Amazon documents Expanded selection under Store for content beyond the default kids-limited selection. It can expose additional apps that Amazon classifies as Guidance Suggested. The label means the title may be suitable with parental guidance; it is not a statement that every family or age group will find it appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the child profile in Parent Dashboard.
  2. Go to the child’s Store settings.
  3. Find Expanded selection and enable it only if you want the broader catalog available for requests or access.
  4. Check the details of each title individually before allowing it.

Expanded selection changes what can be discovered. It does not remove app-level requirements, advertising, external links, in-app purchases or separate subscriptions. Amazon gives examples such as Netflix, Zoom and Minecraft as Guidance Suggested apps; their individual account, subscription and age requirements still apply.

Manage content directly on a device

Amazon says parents can update child content from a Fire Tablet or Fire TV as well as from Parent Dashboard. The on-device route is useful when you are already holding the child’s device, but the available controls depend on the model, software version and marketplace.

Fire Tablet

Open the adult controls or the child-profile management area, select the child, and look for content-management options corresponding to Content, Amazon Kids+ Subscription content or Amazon content. Turn the desired titles on or off, then return to the child profile.

Fire TV

Open the profile or parental-controls settings from the television interface and select the child profile. Look for the content controls that manage shared Amazon content. Fire TV may not expose every option available in the web dashboard, so use Parent Dashboard when a setting is missing.

Other compatible devices

Kindle e-readers and Alexa devices support child profiles, but profile features are not identical across products. A control documented for a Fire tablet may be absent on an e-reader or speaker. In that situation, make the change in the browser-based dashboard, then let the device synchronize.

Content that cannot be added or may be temporary

Excluded content types

Amazon says the following cannot be added to a child profile through these sharing controls:

  • Personal documents
  • Music
  • Prime Video rentals
  • Videos included with Prime

If an item belongs to one of these categories, changing the Content switch will not make it appear. Look for a supported app or book edition instead, if one exists.

Public-library books

Public-library books can be added when the household uses Amazon Kids+, but the permission is tied to the loan. When the lending period expires or the adult returns the book, Amazon removes the borrowed title from the child profile. This is expected behavior, not a synchronization failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check an app before approving it

Amazon warns that some apps may contain advertising, external links, in-app purchases or requests for personal information. An app can also require its own subscription or a separate Kids profile. Review the app’s store details and the developer’s account requirements before sharing it.

  • Advertising: Determine whether ads are present and whether they can be restricted.
  • External links: Check where buttons and links lead outside the app.
  • Purchases: Look for paid upgrades, subscriptions or one-time purchases inside the app.
  • Data requests: Note what personal information the app asks for and whether the child can use it without supplying unnecessary details.
  • Account requirements: Verify whether the app needs an adult account, a separate child account or a paid service.
  • Age and content fit: Read the listing and preview screens rather than relying only on the profile’s broad age filter.

Disabling web access in a child profile does not prevent access to every website that may be embedded in content. Treat an app’s internal browser, links and communications features as separate review points.

Amazon Kids versus Amazon Kids+

Service Meaning How it affects adding content
Amazon Kids A child-profile experience on compatible devices A profile can be created at no additional cost, subject to device and marketplace support. You can share eligible content owned by the household.
Amazon Kids+ A paid subscription with additional premium, kid-focused content The Parent Dashboard includes a separate list for subscription-included apps, books and other titles. Access depends on an active subscription and the title’s availability.

Having an Amazon Kids profile does not by itself include the Kids+ catalog. Conversely, paying for Kids+ does not make excluded content types or every adult purchase available to the child.

Troubleshoot a missing app or book

The title is not in either Content list

  • Confirm that you selected the intended child profile.
  • Check both Amazon Kids+ Subscription content and Amazon content.
  • Verify that the adult account actually owns the purchase or has an active Kids+ subscription.
  • Check whether the item is an excluded type such as music, a personal document, a Prime Video rental or a video included with Prime.
  • Look for regional, age, licensing or device-compatibility limits.

The switch is on, but the child cannot see the title

  1. Connect the device to the internet.
  2. Exit and reopen the child profile.
  3. Restart the device if the profile still shows an old catalog.
  4. Check available storage and any pending app or system updates.
  5. Return to Parent Dashboard and verify that the switch remained on for the correct child.

The child cannot request an app

  • Open the child’s settings and confirm that Store is enabled.
  • Check whether the title requires Expanded selection.
  • Review the child’s age filter and the device’s compatibility.
  • Make sure the title is available in your marketplace and is not excluded by its licensing or account requirements.

A borrowed book disappeared

Check the library-loan status. Amazon removes a public-library book when its lending period ends or when it is returned, even if it was previously enabled in the child profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A menu is missing

Amazon says Kids features vary by device and that the service is available only in select marketplaces. Use the browser Parent Dashboard, select the child profile, and look for the setting by name—Content, Store, Additional Content or Expanded selection. If the setting is unavailable there too, the feature may not be supported for that device, account or marketplace.

A practical approval checklist

  • Did you select the right child?
  • Did you check the correct content source?
  • Is the title eligible for the child’s device, age and marketplace?
  • Does the app include ads, external links, purchases or data requests?
  • Does it require a separate subscription or profile?
  • If the child is requesting it, are Store and, when necessary, Expanded selection enabled?
  • Is the title a temporary library loan?
  • Has the child’s device synchronized after the change?

What to remember

The reliable sequence is Parent Dashboard → Content → child profile → content category → title switch. Use the subscription list for Kids+ titles and Amazon content for eligible purchases. Store permission and Expanded selection control discovery and requests, not automatic approval of every app. Device capabilities, marketplace rules and the title’s own requirements determine what ultimately appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Amazon Kids+ to add books and apps?

No. Amazon Kids is the child-profile experience, and eligible purchases can be shared through Amazon content. Amazon Kids+ is needed for titles supplied through the separate subscription catalog.

Why can’t I find a purchase in the Kids+ list?

Purchased items and subscription-included items use different lists. Select the child under Content, then check Amazon content for eligible purchases. Ownership alone does not override age, device, marketplace or licensing limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I add music, personal documents or Prime videos?

No. Amazon excludes personal documents, music, Prime Video rentals and Videos Included with Prime from these child-profile sharing controls.

Can a library ebook stay in the child profile permanently?

No. A public-library book can be added with Amazon Kids+, but it is removed when the lending period expires or the adult returns it.

Is a Fire tablet required?

No. You can use the browser-based Parent Dashboard or its mobile app with a compatible child-profile device. Fire Tablet and Fire TV also provide device-based controls, while features vary across Kindle, Alexa and other products.

What does Expanded selection do?

Expanded selection appears under Store and can expose apps outside the default kids-limited catalog, including Guidance Suggested titles. It does not remove ads, external links, in-app purchases, separate subscriptions or account requirements.

The Bottom Line

Open Parent Dashboard, choose Content and the correct child, then toggle the title under Amazon Kids+ Subscription content or Amazon content. Enable Store or Expanded selection only when appropriate, and review each app’s requirements before approval.
