On a touch-enabled Windows device, Excel normally enables the tab automatically. Once it is visible, use pens or a highlighter for editable ink, Ink to Shape for clean diagrams, or Action Pen to turn handwriting into cell text.
The exact controls depend on your platform and input method. A mouse, finger, active pen and Mac trackpad can all create marks, but annotation ink, standard shapes and cell data are different outputs. The guide below shows the correct workflow for each.

What the Draw tab is for
Excel’s Draw tab is an inking workspace rather than a single drawing command. It supports three distinct jobs:
- Annotating a worksheet: Pens and highlighters place freehand ink above the sheet. Each stroke behaves as an object that can be selected, moved, copied, recolored, resized, rotated or deleted.
- Creating diagrams: Ink to Shape converts a freehand line, arrow or geometric sketch into the closest standard Office shape, which can then be formatted with the usual shape tools.
- Entering worksheet data: Action Pen handwriting is interpreted as text and written into cells. This is different from drawing an annotation over a cell.
Knowing which result you need prevents a common mistake: writing over a cell with a normal pen does not populate that cell. Use Action Pen when the handwriting must become spreadsheet data.

Add the Draw tab in Excel for Windows
Touch-enabled Windows devices
Microsoft states that “If your device is touch-enabled, the Draw tab is turned on automatically.” If it is not shown, Excel may not be detecting touch correctly, or the ribbon may have been customized previously. Use the manual method below.
Windows desktop without an automatic tab
- Open Excel and choose File.
- Select Options, then open Customize Ribbon.
- In the list of main tabs on the right, find Draw and select its check box. If the entry is in a collapsed group, expand the group first.
- Choose OK. Draw should now appear on the ribbon.
This changes the ribbon in Excel; it does not add a drawing layer to a particular workbook. If the tab disappears after a reset, repeat the same Customize Ribbon path.
Draw, write and highlight on a worksheet
Choose a pen or highlighter
- Open the Draw tab.
- Choose a pen or highlighter. A pen is suited to lines, handwriting and marks that need strong contrast; a highlighter creates a translucent emphasis stroke.
- Open the selected pen’s menu to set its thickness and color. Choose a size that remains legible at the worksheet’s zoom level.
- Draw with a finger, compatible active pen or mouse. On a touch computer, use Draw with Touch when you want finger input; turn it off when you need touch to select cells normally.
Ink remains separate from cell contents. You can place it over a table, chart or blank area without changing formulas or values. Saving the workbook preserves the ink objects, although recipients need an Excel version that supports the Draw tools to edit them fully.

Press Esc after inking to stop the active pen and return to ordinary selection mode. This is important with a mouse or touch screen: if a pen remains active, the next click or drag can create another mark instead of selecting a cell.
Move, copy or remove a stroke
Ink is an object, so it can be repositioned or duplicated like other worksheet objects. For a precise selection, use Lasso Select rather than trying to click a thin stroke:

- On Draw, choose Lasso Select.
- Drag a closed loop around the ink you want to edit. Include every stroke that should move together.
- Use the selected object’s handles or commands to move, copy, recolor, resize, rotate or delete it.
- Choose a pen again to continue drawing, or press Esc to leave inking mode.
Lasso Select is designed for ink. It does not select ordinary pictures or shape objects, so use the normal object-selection tools for those elements.
Convert freehand marks into clean shapes
Use Ink to Shape before drawing
- Open Draw and select Ink to Shape.
- Choose a pen and draw a line, arrow, rectangle, circle or another recognizable form.
- Excel converts the completed stroke to the closest standard Office shape.
- Use the shape’s Format tab to change fill, outline, transparency, size and style.
Ink to Shape works best when the sketch is completed in one deliberate gesture and has a recognizable outline. It is useful for process diagrams, callouts and hand-drawn arrows that need consistent alignment with worksheet content.

Keep genuinely freehand marks
Turn Ink to Shape off before drawing when you want a signature-like stroke, rough annotation, handwritten note or other organic mark. Existing converted shapes remain shapes; switching the option off affects subsequent strokes.
Enter handwriting as cell data with Action Pen
Action Pen is the tool to use when handwriting must become editable Excel text. Microsoft’s documented path is: on the ribbon, select Draw, then in the Drawing Tools group select Action Pen.
- Open the worksheet and select the cell or cell area where the value belongs.
- Choose Draw > Action Pen.
- Write inside the target cell with a compatible active pen, finger or supported pointing device. Keep writing within the cell boundaries so Excel can associate the strokes with the intended cell.
- Pause or finish the entry. Excel interprets the handwriting and places the resulting text in the cell.
- Check the converted value, especially for similar-looking characters, decimal points, dates and negative signs. Correct the cell with the keyboard if recognition is wrong.
Action Pen gestures
- Delete content: cross out or scribble over the cell content using the documented deletion gesture.
- Select cells: circle the cells you want to select.
- Enter values: write directly in the cell rather than in the blank area above the grid.
These gestures act on worksheet data, not on freehand ink objects. If your strokes remain visible as drawings instead of changing a cell, switch from a regular pen to Action Pen and write over the cell itself.

Platform and input differences
The Draw tab is not identical across Excel editions. Use this comparison to choose the workflow that matches your device.
Recommended Free Tools
| Platform | Input methods | Draw capabilities documented for the platform | Important requirements or limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excel for Windows desktop | Mouse, finger, compatible active pen | Pens, highlighters, Draw with Touch, Lasso Select, Ink to Shape and Action Pen | Microsoft lists inking support for Current Channel version 1601 or later and Windows 10 version 1511 or later. Channel and platform availability can change. |
| Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac | Mouse, compatible input device, trackpad | Draw tools, pens, highlighters and trackpad drawing where supported | Draw with Trackpad requires Office for Mac 16.22.19021100 or later and a trackpad. It cannot be enabled while Freeze Panes is active. |
| Excel for iOS | Finger, Apple Pencil where supported | Draw tab, selection tools, Draw with Touch, eraser, pens, ink colors and thickness settings; Lasso Select is available where shown in the Excel app | App labels and feature availability can vary by iOS and Excel release. Apple Pencil Always Draws Ink is controlled in Excel’s app settings. |
| Excel for Android | Finger and compatible active stylus | Draw tab, selection tools, Draw with Touch, eraser, pens, ink colors and thickness settings; Lasso Select is available where shown in the Excel app | Mobile controls and availability can vary by Android and Excel release. |
The table distinguishes documented capabilities from assumptions about a particular device. A phone or tablet may show fewer commands than desktop Excel, and an active stylus must be supported by both the hardware and operating system.
Use Draw on Excel for Mac with a trackpad
Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac includes a dedicated Draw with Trackpad option. It is useful when no stylus is available but you still want a controlled freehand mark.
- Open the Draw tab.
- Select Draw with Trackpad.
- Use one finger on the trackpad to draw in the drawing window.
- Use two fingers to pan around that drawing window when the mark extends beyond the visible area.
- Finish the mark and close or leave the drawing window according to the on-screen control, then use the resulting ink on the sheet.
Microsoft says this feature requires Office for Mac 16.22.19021100 and a trackpad. If Freeze Panes is active, Excel cannot enable Draw with Trackpad; turn off Freeze Panes, draw, and restore the pane arrangement afterward if needed.
Prevent unwanted pen marks
Windows: make the pen select by default
If every touch or pen contact starts drawing when you intended to select a cell, change the default interaction:

- Select Advanced.
- Scroll to the Pen section.

- Choose OK.
You can still enter inking mode deliberately from the Draw tab. This setting changes the default behavior so a pen contact acts like selection and interaction until you choose a drawing tool.
iPhone or iPad: Apple Pencil behavior
- Open Excel’s app settings.
- Turn off Apple Pencil Always Draws Ink.
- Return to the workbook and choose a pen only when you want to draw.
The wording and location of mobile settings can change with an app update, but the setting controls whether Apple Pencil automatically enters ink mode.

The Draw tab is missing
- On Windows, check File > Options > Customize Ribbon and enable Draw.
- On a touch-enabled device, remember that automatic activation depends on Excel detecting touch; manual ribbon customization is the fallback.
- On mobile, confirm that you are using the Excel app rather than a viewer or a restricted editing mode, then look for Draw in the ribbon or overflow controls.
A click makes a line instead of selecting
Press Esc to leave the active pen. On Windows, set Use pen to select and interact with content by default under File > Options > Advanced > Pen. On touch devices, turn off Draw with Touch when you need finger selection.
The mark is difficult to edit
Choose Lasso Select and circle the complete ink object. Clicking a narrow stroke can be unreliable, and Lasso Select will not select a photograph or standard shape.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The sketch looks uneven in a diagram
Enable Ink to Shape before drawing the diagram. For a mark that has already been converted, use the standard shape’s Format controls. If the original freehand appearance is important, undo the conversion and draw again with Ink to Shape disabled.

Handwriting appears as ink instead of text
Normal pens always create ink objects. Select Draw > Action Pen, write inside the intended cell and review the converted value. Action Pen’s output is cell text; it is not a replacement for freehand annotation.
Trackpad drawing is unavailable on Mac
Verify the Office for Mac version and trackpad requirement, then check whether Freeze Panes is enabled. Microsoft specifically notes that Draw with Trackpad cannot be enabled while Freeze Panes is active.
Choose the right Draw workflow
| Your goal | Tool | What you get | How you edit it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Circle a value, sign a form or mark an exception | Pen or highlighter | Editable freehand ink object | Lasso Select, then move, copy, recolor, resize, rotate or delete |
| Create a neat arrow, box or diagram element | Ink to Shape enabled before drawing | Standard Office shape | Shape Format controls for fill, transparency, outline and style |
| Populate a spreadsheet from handwriting | Action Pen | Recognized text in a cell | Edit the cell as ordinary Excel data |
| Draw without a stylus on a Mac | Draw with Trackpad | Ink created in a trackpad drawing window | Use the available ink-selection tools after placing it on the sheet |
Practical accuracy and accessibility tips
- Zoom the worksheet before handwriting into narrow cells; more writing space generally makes recognition easier.
- Use a contrasting pen color for annotations, but keep highlighter transparency in mind when the sheet contains colored fills.
- Separate annotation and data-entry passes. First use Action Pen to populate cells, then switch to a normal pen for visual callouts so the two kinds of content are not confused.
- Use Lasso Select to move a group of related strokes instead of dragging them one at a time.
- After converting a sketch with Ink to Shape, inspect arrowheads, corners and proportions before sharing the workbook.
- When collaborating, remember that ink is an object layered over the grid. It does not automatically follow a row or column if cells are inserted, sorted or filtered.
- Check recognized Action Pen values manually when the workbook contains financial amounts, dates, scientific notation or identifiers where one character can change the meaning.
Version and availability notes
Microsoft’s requirements table lists inking support beginning with Current Channel version 1601 and Windows 10 version 1511 or later. Those are minimums documented for the cited support article, not a promise that every Draw command appears in every edition. Office update channels, operating systems and mobile app releases can change feature availability.
For Mac trackpad drawing, the documented minimum is Office for Mac 16.22.19021100 plus a trackpad, with Freeze Panes disabled while the feature is enabled. On iOS and Android, the Draw tab includes core pen, eraser, color and thickness controls, but the exact arrangement and advanced commands can differ by app release and device. State your platform and Excel version when troubleshooting so instructions can be matched to the interface you actually see.
The Bottom Line
Enable Draw from File > Options > Customize Ribbon when it is missing, use pens and Lasso Select for editable annotations, turn on Ink to Shape for diagrams, and choose Action Pen when handwriting must become cell text. Platform, app version and input hardware determine which controls are available.
