Language keyboards, third-party keyboard apps, and physical keyboards are managed in different places, so the correct steps depend on which type you mean.
You can add keyboards for writing or Dictation in different languages without changing the language used for the iPhone’s menus. Adding a keyboard is a free settings change; you do not need an external accessory to type in another language.

Which kind of iPhone keyboard are you adding?
“Keyboard” can mean three different things on an iPhone. Identifying the right one prevents you from looking in the wrong settings screen.
| Keyboard type | What it does | Where it is managed |
|---|---|---|
| Language or emoji keyboard | An onscreen layout for another language, emoji, or a supported bilingual combination | Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards |
| Third-party keyboard app | An installed keyboard app that can provide its own typing interface or features | Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Keyboards, when the app supports this feature |
| Physical keyboard | A separate accessory, such as a Magic Keyboard, used to enter text on the iPhone | Hardware connection and the iPhone’s external-keyboard settings, not the onscreen keyboard list |
The main procedure in this guide concerns onscreen language and emoji keyboards. A physical keyboard is optional and is not required to add another typing language. A third-party app is also optional: Apple’s built-in keyboards can handle the languages and layouts that appear in the Add New Keyboard list.

How to add a language keyboard
You can install more than one language keyboard and keep your existing keyboard. Adding a keyboard changes the choices available when you are typing; it does not remove the current one or change the language of the iPhone’s interface.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Keyboard.
- Tap Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard.
- Choose the language keyboard you want from the list.
The selected keyboard is added to the Keyboards list immediately. Repeat the last two steps for every additional language you need. Each language or regional variant appears as its own selectable entry, so check the wording carefully when more than one version is listed.
Apple’s guide describes these keyboards as useful for both writing and Dictation. That means the language choice is not limited to tapping letters on the screen; it can also be available when you dictate, subject to the languages and options shown on your iPhone.

What happens after you add it
The new keyboard becomes one of the choices available from the keyboard-switching control in text fields. The keyboard you were already using remains installed, so you can move between them without returning to Settings. Your existing text, apps, and system menus are not translated or reformatted simply because another keyboard was added.
If you add several keyboards, all of them can appear in the switcher. Keeping only the entries you actually use makes the long-press menu easier to scan, especially when you alternate between two languages frequently.
Adding emoji
Emoji is treated as one of the available keyboard choices. If Emoji is already present, it will appear in the switching menu; if it has been removed, use the same Add New Keyboard list to add it again. Emoji is therefore managed with the onscreen keyboard list, not through the third-party keyboard-app area.
How to switch keyboards while typing
Switching is done from the onscreen keyboard, not from the Settings app.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open an app with a text field, such as a message or note.
- Tap the text field so the onscreen keyboard appears.
- Touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key.
- When the list of installed keyboards appears, slide to the keyboard you want and tap it.
The control may show an Emoji symbol or a keyboard-switching symbol depending on the keyboard and the current context. If you tap rather than hold it, iPhone may move directly to the next available keyboard; holding it opens the complete list so you can select a specific one. The long-press method is the reliable choice when several keyboards are installed and you need a particular language rather than simply the next entry.
After you select a keyboard, the key layout and language tools change for the current text-entry session. To change again, use the same control; there is no need to close the app or revisit Settings.
Returning to English
With multiple keyboards installed, touch and hold the same switching control and select your English keyboard. If more than one English layout is installed, choose the exact entry you want, such as the regional English option shown in your list. If English is missing entirely, add it again through Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard.

Switching to emoji and back
Open the keyboard choices by holding the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key, then tap Emoji. To return to a language keyboard, hold the control again and select the language. The available choices are determined by what is installed in the Keyboards list, so deleting Emoji or a language removes it from this menu until you add it again.
Use a supported bilingual keyboard
Apple supports bilingual keyboards for selected language pairs. For example, the iPhone User Guide describes an English (U.S.) and Spanish (Latin America) combination. This option is not available for every pair of languages or every regional variant.
For supported combinations, the bilingual keyboard can recognize and switch between the two languages you use most often without requiring a manual change for every sentence. This is different from installing two ordinary keyboards: two separate entries give you manual control, while a supported bilingual entry is designed to handle both languages within the same keyboard experience.
How to look for the option
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard.
- Look for the bilingual entry or supported language combination in the list.
- If it is listed, tap it to add it; if it is not listed, add the two individual language keyboards instead.
Automatic switching is a feature of supported bilingual keyboards, not a behavior that can be assumed for every pair of installed language keyboards. If your pair is unsupported, nothing is wrong with the individual language keyboards; they simply need to be selected manually from the switcher.
Remove a keyboard you no longer need
Removing a keyboard takes it out of the switching menu but does not delete an entire language from the iPhone or uninstall a third-party app.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Swipe left on the keyboard you want to remove.
- Tap Delete.
If you remove a keyboard by mistake, add it again through Add New Keyboard. Removing a language keyboard can also remove that language from your quick-switch choices, so check the list before deleting an entry you still use. The deletion affects the keyboard entry, not documents that already contain text in that language.
Reorder keyboards in the switcher
The order of the Keyboards list controls the order in which the installed keyboards are presented when you cycle through them.
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Tap Edit.
- Drag the reorder control beside a keyboard to move it up or down.
- Tap Done.
Reordering is useful when you switch frequently between two languages and want them next to each other in the list. It does not change the keyboard’s layout or language, and it does not remove any entry. If the wrong keyboard appears first when you cycle with a tap, review this order and move the preferred one higher.
Choose a different layout for a language
Some language keyboards offer more than one layout. You can select a listed alternative without adding a separate language.

- Tap the language keyboard whose layout you want to change.
- Choose one of the layouts shown for that keyboard.
Only layouts offered for that language appear. If no alternatives are listed, that keyboard has no additional layout choice in the current iOS version or regional configuration. Changing a layout is different from adding another language: the entry remains the same language, but its key arrangement changes to the option you selected.

Add and select a third-party keyboard app
A keyboard app installed from the App Store is handled separately from Apple’s built-in language list. Installing the app alone does not necessarily make it your active keyboard.
- Install a keyboard app that supports use as an iPhone keyboard.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default Apps.
- Tap Keyboards.
- Use the controls there to add or delete keyboard apps and select a default, when the app supports default selection.
This settings area is for keyboard apps. It is distinct from General > Keyboard > Keyboards, where Apple’s language and emoji keyboards are added, removed, and reordered. A third-party app can coexist with Apple’s keyboards, so you can retain built-in language entries and select the app when you need it.
If the app does not appear
- Confirm that the app is installed on the same iPhone and has finished installing.
- Check whether the app supports use as an iPhone keyboard and default selection; not every keyboard app supports every option.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Keyboards after installation and check the list again.
- If you no longer want the app available as a keyboard, delete it from that Keyboards area or uninstall the app according to the options shown on your iPhone.
Do not look for a third-party app under the language list if the goal is to set its default status. Conversely, do not use the Default Apps area when you only want to add a built-in language or Emoji keyboard.
Troubleshoot a keyboard that is missing or will not switch
The language is not in the switching menu
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and verify that the language is listed.
- If it is absent, add it through Add New Keyboard.
- If it is listed but you cannot find it while typing, touch and hold the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key rather than tapping it once; the long-press displays the full list.
- Check whether you are looking for a regional variant with a different name from the one you installed.
You cannot find the switching key
Look at the lower-left area of the onscreen keyboard for the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key. Its symbol can vary with the keyboard and context. If an external keyboard is connected, the onscreen keyboard may not be visible; disconnect or put away the physical keyboard when you need the onscreen switcher.
The wrong keyboard appears first
Open the Keyboards list, tap Edit, and drag the preferred keyboard higher in the order. Then tap Done. You can still select any installed keyboard manually from the switcher, regardless of which one is first.
A bilingual option is unavailable
Check the exact language and regional variants you selected. Apple offers bilingual keyboards only for supported pairs. When no combined entry is available, add each language separately and switch between them manually. Installing two languages does not create an automatic bilingual keyboard by itself.
A layout is not available
Tap the language in the Keyboards list and review the layouts displayed there. iPhone cannot select a layout that is not offered for that language and configuration. If the desired arrangement is absent, use one of the listed layouts or add a separate supported language entry when appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou removed a keyboard accidentally
Return to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard, find the same language or Emoji entry, and tap it. Re-adding restores it to the switcher; it does not require reinstalling iOS or changing the phone’s interface language.
When you mean a physical keyboard
An Apple Magic Keyboard or another compatible external keyboard is a separate way to enter text on iPhone. It does not need to be added to the onscreen language-keyboard list, and buying one is not necessary for multilingual typing on the screen.
When a physical keyboard is connected, text is entered through its hardware keys. Apple documents physical keyboards separately from the onscreen keyboard and provides separate settings for external-keyboard behavior and accessibility. The exact controls depend on the hardware and the iOS settings available on your device, so do not expect an external accessory to appear as another row in the onscreen Keyboards list.

Use both types
You can keep language keyboards installed for onscreen entry while using a physical keyboard when it is connected. Manage the onscreen choices in the Keyboards list; manage the external accessory through the iPhone’s hardware-keyboard settings. These are complementary systems rather than two entries for the same keyboard.
A practical setup for multilingual typing
For most people who write in two languages, this sequence keeps the switcher simple:
- Add only the language keyboards and Emoji you actually use.
- Choose the precise regional variants that match your writing needs.
- Reorder the list so the two most frequent languages are adjacent.
- Test the long-press switcher in a text field and confirm that each entry opens the expected layout.
- If Apple offers a bilingual entry for your pair, use it when automatic language switching is more convenient than manual selection.
- Remove old layouts or languages so the switcher does not contain unnecessary choices.
This setup leaves the iPhone’s interface language unchanged while giving you direct control over text-entry languages. If you later install a keyboard app, keep its management separate under Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Keyboards and retain the built-in entries you still need.

Frequently asked questions
Does adding a keyboard change my iPhone’s language?
No. It adds another text-entry choice. The iPhone’s menus and system language remain as they were unless you change those settings separately.
Can I add more than two keyboards?
Yes. Repeat Add New Keyboard for each language, Emoji entry, or supported bilingual keyboard you want. Reorder or remove entries later if the switcher becomes crowded.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why do I see an Emoji key instead of a keyboard icon?
The visible control varies with the keyboard and context. Touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key to open the complete list.
Can I switch keyboards without opening Settings?
Yes. Once keyboards are installed, switch directly in any text field by touching and holding the Emoji or Switch Keyboard control.
Will two separate language keyboards switch automatically?
No. Automatic switching is associated with supported bilingual keyboard entries. If no combined entry is offered for your pair, select each language manually.
Can I change from one regional layout to another?
Open the language in the Keyboards list and choose from the layouts displayed there. Only Apple’s listed alternatives for that language and configuration can be selected.
Is a third-party keyboard added from General > Keyboard?
No. Built-in language and Emoji keyboards use General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Third-party keyboard apps are managed at Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Keyboards, when the app supports those controls.

Do I need a physical keyboard to type another language?
No. An onscreen language keyboard is sufficient. A Magic Keyboard or other compatible accessory is an optional hardware method for entering text.
What if my external keyboard makes the onscreen keyboard disappear?
That can happen while the accessory is connected. Use the physical keyboard for entry, or disconnect or put it away when you need the onscreen Emoji or Switch Keyboard control.
Can removing a keyboard delete my existing messages?
Removing an entry takes it out of the keyboard switcher; it does not delete text you have already written. Add the entry again if you need that language available for new text.
