How to Add and Replace Custom Sounds in Minecraft Bedrock and Java

Which edition do you use: Bedrock or Java? Choose that first. Their resource-pack sound layouts and definition files are different, so a pack built for one edition cannot be copied to the other unchanged.

For Bedrock, the dependable workflow is to prepare an audio file (the official tutorial demonstrates OGG), place it in the pack’s sounds hierarchy, then either mirror a vanilla filename to replace an existing effect or connect a new event through the pack’s sound-definition files. Java uses a namespace-based layout with sounds.json under assets/<namespace>; its exact fields depend on the Minecraft version and pack format you target.

Choose the edition and the result you want

Before editing an audio file, write down the edition and game version you are targeting. Bedrock’s Microsoft Learn tutorial and validation rules describe one set of files; Forge’s Java 1.21 reference describes another. Treat them as separate workflows.

Question Bedrock Edition Java Edition
Where sound configuration is described A root sounds.json can map an event to an identifier, with entries in sounds/sound_definitions.json. sounds.json is placed at assets/<namespace>/sounds.json, as described in the Forge 1.21 sound reference.
Audio formats documented in the cited material WAV, OGG and FSB are supported by Bedrock. The custom-sound tutorial demonstrates exporting OGG. Forge’s 1.21 reference discusses OGG sound files.
Replacing a built-in sound Mirror the vanilla folder hierarchy and use the exact existing filename before the extension. The replacement extension may differ. Use the Java version’s namespace and event schema; do not copy Bedrock’s root files.
Adding a new event Associate the event in root sounds.json, then define the identifier and one or more asset paths in sounds/sound_definitions.json. Define the event in the namespace’s Java sounds.json, following the target version’s schema.
Testing Activate the pack in a test world, trigger the event, and optionally use /playsound for a manual check. Activate the Java resource pack and trigger the event appropriate to the version or mod setup.

The rest of this guide gives the Bedrock procedure in the most detail because that is where the cited official step-by-step instructions are available, then explains the Java differences without pretending that one edition’s files work in the other.

Decide whether you are replacing or adding a sound

These goals look similar in a file manager but require different configuration.

  • Replace an existing sound: the game already knows the event. You supply a file at the same relative location and filename used by the vanilla resource pack.
  • Add a new sound event: the game needs a mapping from an event name to a sound identifier and then to one or more audio assets. Bedrock uses both sounds.json and sounds/sound_definitions.json in the tutorial workflow.
  • Make several variants: list multiple assets for the identifier. The Microsoft example allows the game to choose among listed sounds, providing variation without changing the event itself.

Deciding this at the start prevents a common failure: creating a new audio file but never connecting it to an event that Minecraft can invoke.

Prepare the audio asset

Record, edit or import

You can record an original effect, edit an existing file, synthesize one digitally, or import an already prepared clip. The Microsoft tutorial uses Audacity as an example, not as a requirement. Any audio editor that can export a format accepted by your edition is suitable. A microphone is relevant only if you choose to record; importing or digitally creating a sound does not require one.

Export an appropriate file

For the Bedrock tutorial workflow, export the finished clip as OGG. Microsoft Learn’s “Introduction to Sound,” last updated September 19, 2023, lists WAV, OGG and FSB as Bedrock-supported formats, while the custom-sound tutorial specifically demonstrates OGG export. Keep the original project file separately so you can revise the effect without degrading a previously exported copy.

Do not assume that a file extension alone fixes an incompatible file. If a sound is silent or rejected, re-export it from the editor in a format documented for the edition rather than merely renaming the extension.

Keep filenames and folders deliberate

Use simple, stable names and decide the relative path before you build the pack. For a replacement, the path and filename must mirror the vanilla asset. For a new event, the path you place in the sound definition must point to the asset’s location in the pack. A typo in either place leaves the event without a playable file even when the audio itself is valid.

Bedrock: create the resource-pack structure

1. Start with the vanilla pack as your map

Microsoft recommends using the vanilla resource pack to learn the exact sound names and folder hierarchy. Find the asset or event you want to change, note its relative path and filename, and reproduce that structure in your custom pack. This is safer than guessing a folder name from memory.

2. Create the pack and its sound folder

  1. Create a Bedrock resource-pack directory with the normal pack files for your target game version.
  2. Inside that pack, create a sounds directory. Keep sound assets beneath the locations expected by the vanilla layout or by your definition entries.
  3. Copy your exported OGG (or another Bedrock-supported format) into the intended relative path.

Pack metadata and other non-sound files must follow the current Bedrock pack specification. The cited Microsoft validation guidance warns about invalid structure and misplaced definitions, so use the current vanilla pack for version-specific organization rather than copying an old example unchanged.

Bedrock: replace an existing sound

  1. Locate the original asset. In the vanilla resource pack, find the sound played by the event you want to change.
  2. Mirror its directories. Recreate the same folder hierarchy inside your custom pack. The path must be relative to the pack in the same way as the vanilla asset.
  3. Match the filename exactly. Use the identical filename before the extension. The tutorial explicitly notes that the replacement extension need not match; its example replaces an FSB asset with an OGG file.
  4. Do not add an unnecessary new event mapping. Because the existing event already points to that asset name, a correctly placed replacement can override what the player hears when the event fires.
  5. Activate and trigger the event. Enable the pack in a test world, perform the action that normally plays the sound, and confirm that the replacement is selected.

If the old sound still plays, check the pack’s activation order and then compare every directory and character in the path with the vanilla reference. A nearly identical name is still a different asset.

Bedrock: add a brand-new sound event

A new event needs two links: the event-to-identifier association and the identifier-to-file definition.

1. Add the event association at the pack root

Create sounds.json at the root of the resource pack. In the Microsoft tutorial’s example, the event key chest.open is associated with the identifier random.chestopen. Reproduce the current official syntax for your target version and preserve valid JSON punctuation; do not paste fields from an unrelated edition or an old sample.

2. Define the identifier in the sounds folder

Create sound_definitions.json inside the pack’s sounds folder. The definition for random.chestopen lists one or more sound asset paths. Each path must resolve to a file that you placed in the pack. Multiple paths allow the game to select randomly among the listed assets in the tutorial’s example.

3. Keep one coherent definition set

Microsoft’s validation rules flag multiple definition files and definitions outside the expected sound-folder organization. Keep the definitions in the location and file arrangement required by the current Bedrock schema instead of scattering fragments through several similarly named files.

4. Test the event directly

Activate the pack in a test world and trigger the normal in-game action if one exists. You can also use the /playsound command to manually invoke a custom sound from the resource pack. Use the identifier exactly as it appears in the definition and consult the game’s command help for the argument order for your version.

Bedrock testing and validation

Use a small test world

Test before combining the sound pack with a large project. Enable the pack, enter a world where you can repeatedly perform the target action, and change only one variable at a time. For a replacement, compare the original event with the custom file. For a new event, first trigger it with /playsound, then verify the intended gameplay event if you have connected one.

Interpret the official limits correctly

Microsoft Learn states: “Minecraft: Bedrock Edition supports .wav, .ogg, and .fsb sound files, and up to 32 sounds can be played in-game simultaneously.” That figure is specific to Bedrock’s “Introduction to Sound” material, last updated September 19, 2023; it is not a Java performance guarantee.

Check JSON before checking the audio

When a new event fails, validate the definition files first. A missing comma, an unmatched brace, an incorrect key, or a definition in the wrong directory can prevent the mapping from loading at all. Once the JSON and paths are valid, test the audio format and file itself.

Java Edition: use the namespace layout

Java resource packs do not use Bedrock’s root sounds.json plus sounds/sound_definitions.json workflow. Forge’s documentation for Java Edition 1.21 describes sound events and categories, with OGG files and sounds.json located at assets/<namespace>/sounds.json.

1. Confirm the exact Java target

Record the Minecraft version, the resource-pack format expected by that version, and whether a mod supplies the event. Java sound schemas and pack metadata are version-sensitive. The Forge 1.21 page is useful orientation, but it is not a complete Mojang walkthrough of every current resource-pack setting.

2. Build the namespace tree

Place your Java sound configuration under the namespace you intend to use: assets/<namespace>/sounds.json. Store the OGG assets in the corresponding namespace sound hierarchy required by that version. Keep the namespace spelling consistent between the event definition and each asset path.

3. Define or replace the event according to the Java schema

For a replacement, inspect the vanilla Java assets for the target version and reproduce the event’s expected name and relative asset path in your namespace or override arrangement. For a new event, define the event and its category in the Java sounds.json format documented for that version. Do not insert Bedrock identifiers or Bedrock definition files into the Java pack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Activate and verify

Enable the resource pack in Java, trigger the event in a controlled world, and watch for resource-loading errors. If a mod owns the event, verify that the mod’s documented identifier and namespace are being used. A Java pack can be structurally correct yet fail if it targets a different game or mod version.

Audio preparation choices

Approach What you need When it fits
Record original audio A recording setup and an editor that exports a supported format You want a completely new effect and will capture it yourself.
Edit an existing clip An audio editor and a source file you are allowed to modify You want to shorten, layer or transform a sound before exporting.
Import a prepared file A file in a format supported by the target edition You already have an asset and only need to place and map it.

The official tutorial does not require dedicated recording hardware or a particular editor. Choose tools based on how you are obtaining the audio, then verify the exported file rather than assuming the project format is playable in Minecraft.

Troubleshooting: symptom to fix

The original sound still plays

  • Compare the replacement’s relative directories with the vanilla asset one level at a time.
  • Check the filename character-for-character, including capitalization and the portion before the extension.
  • Confirm that the intended pack is enabled in the world and that another active pack is not taking precedence.

The new event does nothing

  • Check that root sounds.json associates the event with the same identifier used in sound_definitions.json.
  • Check that each definition path points to the actual file location.
  • Use /playsound with the identifier to separate an event-mapping problem from an audio-file problem.

The pack fails to load or reports a validation error

  • Validate JSON syntax: balanced braces and brackets, quoted keys and values, and commas in the correct places.
  • Remove duplicate definition files and move definitions into the expected sounds organization.
  • Compare the pack’s structure with the current vanilla pack and the Microsoft validation rules for your Bedrock version.

The file is silent or rejected

  • Re-export it as OGG for the documented tutorial workflow, or use another format explicitly supported by the edition.
  • Make sure the file was copied completely and is not merely an audio project file renamed with a different extension.
  • Test the same definition with a known-good short clip to determine whether the problem is the asset or the mapping.

Java works in one version but not another

Recheck the target version’s pack format, namespace path, event schema and mod documentation. Java details in the Forge 1.21 reference should not be treated as universal instructions for every release.

A repeatable workflow for future packs

  1. Write the edition and exact game version at the top of your project notes.
  2. Choose replacement or new event before creating folders.
  3. Use the edition’s vanilla pack or current official reference to identify names and paths.
  4. Prepare the audio and export a format documented for that edition; OGG is the demonstrated Bedrock workflow.
  5. Place the file at the required relative path.
  6. Create only the configuration files required by that edition and keep their identifiers consistent.
  7. Validate JSON and directory placement before testing gameplay.
  8. Enable the pack in a small test world and trigger the event normally.
  9. For Bedrock, use /playsound to test a new identifier directly, then test the gameplay event.
  10. Change one item at a time when troubleshooting so you know which correction fixed the problem.

This process scales from a single replacement to a collection of variants while preserving the most important distinction: Bedrock and Java are different resource-pack systems, even when the player hears a similar sound in both.
