How to Add and Organize Widgets on a Samsung Galaxy Phone

On a Samsung Galaxy phone, touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen, tap Widgets, choose a widget and any available variant, then tap Add. You can drag the widget to another position or Home screen panel, resize it when its controls allow, combine compatible widgets into a stack, or remove it without deleting the app. The exact menus depend on your Galaxy model, One UI version and region.

What a Galaxy widget does

A widget is a live panel from an app that shows information or exposes a control without requiring you to open the full app. Depending on what is installed and supported on your phone, examples can include weather, SmartThings routines, email, Camera, Samsung Notes, Spotify and YouTube. These are examples, not a guarantee that every Galaxy phone or app offers every widget.

Widgets normally live on the Home screen, but compatible Galaxy software can also provide widgets on the Lock Screen and, on supported devices and configurations, the Always On Display (AOD). A widget’s available sizes, settings and placement options are controlled by both the app and One UI.

How do I add a widget to my Galaxy phone’s Home screen?

  1. Go to the Home screen panel where you want the widget. If necessary, swipe left or right to choose another panel.
  2. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen until the customization controls appear.
  3. Tap Widgets.
  4. Browse the recommended items or scroll through the list. You can usually tap an app name to see its available widgets and sizes.
  5. Select the widget and variant you want, then tap Add. Some widgets show an additional setup screen; complete it before returning to the Home screen.

The widget is placed in an open area large enough for its selected size. If there is not enough room, move existing icons or widgets to another position or panel and repeat the process. Samsung’s labels and the visual layout of the picker can differ between devices and software versions.

Choose the right variant before adding

An app can offer several versions of the same widget. One may be a compact shortcut, while another shows more information or controls and occupies more grid space. Tap through the available previews and check the dimensions before choosing Add. If a widget asks you to select an account, playlist, location, routine or note, that selection affects what the panel displays; it does not create a separate copy of the app.

If you cannot find an app in the picker, scroll through the complete list rather than relying only on the recommended section. The app may use a different name, may not provide a widget, or may no longer support widgets on your device’s software.

How to move and organize Home screen widgets

Move a widget on the same panel

  1. Touch and hold the widget.
  2. Drag it to the open location you want.
  3. Release it when the placement outline appears.

Widgets occupy a rectangular grid area, so moving one may shift nearby icons or leave a gap that is too small for the widget. Try a different position if the phone will not place it where you first drag it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move a widget to another Home screen panel

Touch and hold the widget, drag it to the left or right edge of the display, wait for the next panel to appear, and release it in an open area. You can also drag it across several panels one at a time. This changes only the Home screen position; it does not change the widget’s app data.

Use a practical layout

  • Put glanceable information, such as weather or calendar details, near the top of the first panel.
  • Place controls you use repeatedly, such as a routine or media control, where your thumb can reach them comfortably.
  • Keep the largest widgets on less crowded panels so icons and folders do not become difficult to select.
  • Leave at least one clear area on each panel when you expect to add another widget later.
  • Group widgets by purpose, such as communication, travel, media or smart-home controls, so related information is on the same panel.
  • Keep a panel with fewer widgets if you often need to reach app icons quickly; a widget’s larger touch area can otherwise make accidental selections more likely.

To make several panels easier to manage, touch and hold an empty Home screen area and use the panel preview to identify where each group belongs. The names and controls in that preview vary by One UI version, so use the controls shown on your phone.

How to resize a widget

Not every widget supports resizing. Touch and hold a widget and look for a resize outline, dots or handles. On supported versions, including Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance, dragging a corner changes the widget’s width or height. On another model, the control may appear as a resize dot or a different outline.

  1. Touch and hold the widget.
  2. If resize handles or an outline appear, drag a corner or the displayed handle to the desired size.
  3. Release it, then check that the widget still shows the information or controls you need.

If no handle appears, that widget has a fixed size on your device. Installing a newer version of the app may add options, but resizing remains an app-and-device capability rather than a universal One UI function. A larger variant may be available in the picker even when an already-added widget cannot be resized freely.

How to remove a widget without deleting the app

  1. Touch and hold the widget on the Home screen.
  2. Tap Remove.

Removing a widget removes its Home screen panel only. It does not uninstall the underlying app or delete that app’s settings. To put it back, open the Widgets picker and add it again. If the widget had its own configuration, you may be asked to choose those options again.

Be careful to select Remove, not an app-management command that may appear in a different menu. Removing a widget is reversible by adding it again; uninstalling an app is a separate action.

How to combine widgets in a widget stack

On software that supports stacks, several compatible widgets can share one Home screen space. You swipe left or right on the stack to switch between them, which is useful when you want multiple panels of information without giving each one its own grid area.

  1. Touch and hold an existing widget.
  2. Tap Create stack.
  3. Choose another widget and its available variant.
  4. Tap Add.

After creating the stack, swipe left or right across it to view each widget. To change its contents, touch and hold the stack and select Edit stack, then add or remove items as offered by your phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung’s US support guidance says automatic rotation is unavailable on One UI 6.1.1 and later. Do not assume a stack will cycle automatically; check whether your particular software exposes an automatic-rotation control and use manual swiping when it does not.

Stacks do not make unsupported widgets compatible. The picker determines which widgets can be selected, and each item keeps its own variant and app-specific settings. If a widget in a stack stops working, edit the stack to remove that item, test the app, and add it again if support returns.

Compare widget placement options

Location Best use Check first
Home screen Frequent information and controls while the phone is unlocked Available grid space, resize support and whether the app supplies a widget
Lock Screen Small pieces of information before unlocking Model and One UI version; the editor may limit the number and type of widgets
Always On Display At-a-glance information while the display is otherwise off Regional and model support, One UI version and whether AOD is enabled

These are separate placement surfaces. Adding a weather widget to the Home screen does not automatically place it on the Lock Screen or AOD, and removing it from one surface does not remove it from the others.

Home screen, Lock Screen and Always On Display: what changes?

Placement Typical access Important limits
Home screen Touch and hold an empty area, then Widgets Most flexible location; moving and resizing depend on widget support and available grid space.
Lock Screen On One UI 7.0 or later, press and hold an empty Lock Screen area, tap Add Widgets, choose one or two widgets, then tap Done. Choices vary by model and One UI version. One UI 8 guidance for Galaxy S25 devices allows rearranging by pressing and dragging left or right.
Always On Display Use the Lock Screen/AOD customization controls provided by your device. Availability is model-, software- and region-specific. Samsung’s Australian instructions cover Australian variants on One UI 6.1 or later and require AOD to be enabled in Settings.

Lock Screen and AOD widgets are separate from Home screen widgets. Adding one in one location does not automatically add it to the others.

How to add and arrange Lock Screen widgets

One UI 7.0 or later

  1. Press and hold an empty area of the Lock Screen.
  2. Tap Add Widgets.
  3. Select one or two available widgets.
  4. Tap Done.

On devices following Samsung’s One UI 8 Galaxy S25 instructions, press and drag a Lock Screen widget left or right to rearrange it. If these labels or limits are absent, your model or software may use a different Lock Screen editor.

Lock Screen editing may require the phone to be awake at the Lock Screen rather than on the Home screen. If a long press does nothing, wake the display, remain on the Lock Screen, and try again. Do not treat the Home screen’s Widgets button as a substitute for the Lock Screen editor.

Always On Display requirements

Some Samsung regional guidance documents Lock Screen and AOD widgets for One UI 6.1 or later, but it is specifically written for Australian variant devices. Enable Always On Display in Settings before expecting compatible widgets to appear there, and verify support for your exact model, region and software build. A setting available on one regional variant may be absent on another.

If AOD is enabled but no widget option appears, that does not necessarily indicate a fault. The app, phone model, regional firmware and One UI version all affect the available choices. Check the Lock Screen/AOD editor for the controls your device actually provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional third-party Lock Screen customization

Samsung’s UK widget guidance points to Good Lock and its LockStar module for additional Lock Screen customization. Treat this as an optional route: Galaxy Store availability and compatibility are not established for every model or country. Check the module’s listing on your phone before relying on it, and do not install it merely to add a standard Home screen widget.

What to do when you cannot add, move or delete a widget

Turn off a locked Home screen layout

A locked layout prevents changes to widget and icon positions. On affected phones, open Home screen settings and turn off Lock Home screen layout, then try the operation again. The exact path and wording can vary by software version; you can usually reach Home screen settings by touching and holding an empty Home screen area and tapping the settings control.

  • If the switch is already off, return to the Home screen and try the long-press gesture again.
  • If the switch is missing, your carrier, launcher mode or One UI version may use a different settings location.
  • Unlocking the layout does not remove existing widgets; it simply permits editing.

If the Widgets button is missing

Make sure you are pressing an empty part of the Home screen, not an icon, folder or existing widget. A long press on an occupied item opens that item’s menu instead. If the Home screen still does not show customization controls, check whether another launcher is active or whether a restricted mode changes the available menus. The labels can vary, but the relevant control is the Home screen’s widget picker.

If a widget seems to have disappeared

  1. Swipe through every Home screen panel; it may have been moved rather than deleted.
  2. Open the Widgets picker and search under the app that supplied it.
  3. Check whether the app is still installed and opens normally.
  4. Install available updates for the phone and the app, then restart the phone.

An unsupported widget may no longer appear in the picker after an app, device or software change. If the app works but its widget remains unavailable or broken, Samsung advises contacting the app developer because widget behavior is implemented by the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the widget is blank, stale or unresponsive

  • Open the underlying app and complete any sign-in, permission or setup it requests.
  • Check the app’s own settings for data refresh, account access or location permissions.
  • Update the app and One UI, then restart the phone.
  • Remove and add the widget again if its configuration appears corrupted.
  • If only that app’s widget fails while the app itself works, contact that app’s developer.

Do not assume a widget failure means the phone’s Home screen is damaged. A widget can stop working when its app changes, loses a required permission or no longer supports the device’s software.

When a widget will not fit

A selected variant may require more grid space than remains on the panel. Move icons or another widget, use a different panel, or return to the picker and choose a smaller variant. A widget that cannot be resized cannot be made narrower simply by dragging its edge.

Why widget instructions differ between Galaxy phones

Samsung uses One UI labels and layouts that change over time. The same action may be presented with a different button position on One UI 6.1, 6.1.1, 7 or 8, and a feature documented for a Galaxy S25 or a particular regional variant may not be present on another model. Samsung also changes the Lock Screen editor and AOD options by device generation.

When a step in this guide does not match your screen, use the nearest equivalent control in the Home screen or Lock Screen editor rather than forcing the gesture. The reliable concepts are consistent: open the relevant customization surface, choose the widget, confirm it, and use the on-screen handles or menus your device provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Version numbers matter for specific features. For example, Samsung’s stack guidance notes a limitation on automatic rotation beginning with One UI 6.1.1 or later, while the Lock Screen add-widget flow described here starts with One UI 7.0 or later. Those details should not be generalized to every Galaxy phone.

A quick organization checklist

  • Add a widget from Home screen long-press → Widgets → choose widget and variant → Add.
  • Drag it within a panel or to an edge to move it to another panel.
  • Resize only when your widget shows a resize outline, dot or corner handle.
  • Use Remove to clear a widget without uninstalling its app.
  • Create a stack when supported, and use Edit stack to manage its items.
  • Disable Lock Home screen layout if editing controls are blocked.
  • For Lock Screen widgets, use Add Widgets on One UI 7.0 or later; verify model and region support.
  • For AOD widgets, confirm that Always On Display is enabled and that your exact variant supports them.
  • Update, restart and test the underlying app before treating a widget as permanently unavailable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I add a widget to my Samsung Galaxy phone?

Check that you are long-pressing an empty Home screen area, then open Widgets. If the layout is locked, turn off Lock Home screen layout in Home screen settings. Also check that the app is installed and that the widget is supported by your model and One UI version.

Does removing a widget uninstall the app?

No. Remove only clears the widget from the Home screen. The app, its data and its settings remain installed.

Why can’t I resize my widget?

Resizing is controlled by the widget and device. If no resize outline, dot or corner handle appears after a long press, that widget uses a fixed size on your phone. Look for another size variant in the Widgets picker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I put more than one widget in the same space?

On supported software, use Create stack, choose another widget and tap Add. Swipe left or right to switch between stacked widgets, and use Edit stack to manage them. Automatic rotation is not available on One UI 6.1.1 or later according to Samsung’s US guidance, so manual swiping may be required.

How do I add widgets to the Lock Screen?

On One UI 7.0 or later, press and hold an empty Lock Screen area, tap Add Widgets, select one or two widgets and tap Done. The available choices and arrangement controls vary by model and software version.

Why don’t I see widgets on the Always On Display?

AOD widgets are model-, software- and region-specific. Confirm that Always On Display is enabled in Settings and that your exact phone variant supports the feature. Guidance for Australian variants, for example, covers One UI 6.1 or later but does not establish universal support.

A widget disappeared after an update. What should I do?

Check every Home screen panel and the Widgets picker under the supplying app. Confirm the app still opens, install available app and phone updates, and restart the phone. An unsupported widget may no longer be offered; if the app works but its widget does not, contact the app developer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Good Lock to customize Lock Screen widgets?

Samsung’s UK guidance points to Good Lock and its LockStar module as an optional route for additional Lock Screen customization. Galaxy Store availability and compatibility vary, so check your phone’s listing before installing or relying on it.

The Bottom Line

For a Galaxy Home screen widget, long-press an empty area, choose Widgets, select a widget and variant, and tap Add. Drag it to organize it, resize only when handles appear, stack it when supported, and use Remove when you want it gone without uninstalling the app. Lock Screen and Always On Display widgets require separate controls and depend on your model, One UI version and region.
