This guide assumes you have the Aqara Thermostat Hub W200, the model Aqara currently highlights for Apple Adaptive Temperature. Check that the thermostat is compatible with your HVAC system before buying or installing it. Pairing details can vary by device and setup state, so use the code and prompts supplied with your unit.
Check HVAC compatibility before installing
Aqara’s US W200 product page provides a wire compatibility checker and a C-wire check. Aqara lists line-voltage systems (110/220V), millivolt systems, and 0–10VDC systems as incompatible. If a C-wire is needed for your installation, Aqara says its C-Wire Adapter is sold separately; it is not a universal requirement. See Aqara’s W200 compatibility information and follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance. If you are unsure about your wiring, consult a qualified installer rather than guessing.

Add the thermostat to Apple Home
- Open Apple Home. Use the Home app on your iPhone or iPad and follow the prompts to add an accessory.
- Choose the pairing path specified for your device. Aqara documents two routes: for Matter, scan the Matter QR code or enter the Matter setup code; for HomeKit, scan the HomeKit QR code or enter its setup code. These codes and routes are distinct. Follow the W200’s included instructions and the on-screen prompts; the available guidance does not establish one code to use in every W200 setup state.
- Complete the prompts. Assign the accessory to the appropriate home and room if Home requests it, then check that the thermostat appears in the app. Menu labels and screens can vary with software versions.
Aqara’s Matter instructions list these Thread-enabled Apple Matter controllers: HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or 3rd generation 128 GB). A home hub is not a universal prerequisite for pairing, but Apple requires one to set up Home automations. Thread-based accessories also need a Thread-enabled home hub for automations, notifications, and away-from-home control. See Aqara’s Apple Home pairing guidance and Apple’s Home automation requirements.
Do you need Aqara Home too?
No, not simply to use Apple Home’s basic controls and automations. Aqara says Apple Home does not provide some device-management features, such as certain upgrades, sub-device additions, and extra settings. Aqara Home may provide firmware updates and advanced configuration, and Aqara says a device can be managed in both apps.
#1 Best Overall
- Apple Adaptive Temperature - With the Apple Home app, Adaptive Temperature uses your iPhone to adjust the thermostat based on activity states like 'home', 'sleep', 'away' and 'extended away'. This provides comfort upon arrival home and saves energy when away, without the complicated steps of creating or managing schedules. (Note: Adaptive Temperature requires a home hub (Apple TV or HomePod) and an iPhone or Apple Watch, all running version 26 or later.)
- Apple Clean Energy Guidance: Smarter Energy Savings - With the Apple Home app, Clean Energy Guidance makes small temperature adjustments to use cleaner grid times when electricity may cost less, while maintaining comfort. The forecast is personalized for your home location using environmental and grid data. (Note: Clean Energy Guidance is available only in the contiguous U.S.)
- Easy Installation with Wide HVAC Compatibility - Designed to fit most homes, W200 works with about 85% of HVAC systems, including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers, and PTAC units. No C-wire? Simply add the Aqara C-Wire Adapter (sold separately) for stable power. We even include a trim kit to easily cover old wiring and keep your wall looking clean and fresh.
- Functions as a Smart Display for Your Front Door - W200 works as a visual control panel for your Aqara video doorbell (only compatible with G410/G400, G4 excluded) and smart lock, showing visitor snapshots right on the screen and letting you unlock the door with a simple tap. No need to open an app on your phone or run to the door.
- Control Your Climate Your Way: App, Voice Assistant, or One-Tap Button Control – You can manually adjust the temperature via the app, or through voice assistants like Alexa or Siri when connected. You can also use the W100 wireless sensor (sold separately) for quick one-tap physical control. Perfect for easy changes from the couch, bed, or anywhere in your home.
Aqara also documents ways to bind HomeKit devices through Aqara Home: adding a HomeKit device in Aqara Home on iOS can guide you through binding it to HomeKit, while an accessory already added in Apple Home can later be bound in Aqara Home using Me > HomeKit Info > HomeKit Binding. That menu path comes from Aqara’s HomeKit Mode developer guide; labels may change.
Choose the kind of temperature automation you want
Apple Home’s standard automations and Apple’s Shortcuts temperature conditions solve different problems. Aqara describes Adaptive Temperature as another option for supported activity-state adjustments. The right choice depends on the trigger you want and on whether your setup exposes the temperature reading and thermostat action the routine needs.

| Approach | What starts it | Requirements and limits | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Temperature | Household activity states such as home, sleep, away, and extended away | Aqara says all home members’ iPhones or Apple Watches and the home hub must run software version 26 or later. Availability of each state may depend on the account, region, and setup. | Supported thermostat adjustments tied to household activity |
| Apple Home automation | Time of day, location, an accessory action, or sensor detection | Apple requires a home hub to set up automations. The trigger and target action must be available in your Home configuration. | Predictable schedules or routines tied to presence, another accessory, or a sensor |
| Temperature condition in Shortcuts | A conditional temperature reading, such as a value above a threshold | The needed temperature reading must be exposed to the automation, and the target action must be available for your device and software. Apple’s example is guidance, not a W200-specific recipe. | Rules that should run only when a temperature condition is met |
Create a standard automation in Apple Home
Apple’s Home app supports automations triggered by time, location, an accessory’s action, or sensor detection. The exact controls depend on the accessories and sensors exposed in your home.

- Select the trigger that matches your routine: a time, a person’s arrival or departure, an accessory changing state, or a sensor detecting something.
- Choose the accessory or scene to control, configure the available conditions, and save the automation.
- Check that the automation appears in Home and that the selected action is available for the thermostat in your setup.

Use Shortcuts for a temperature threshold
Apple documents conditional temperature logic in Shortcuts. Its example is: “If the temperature is above 70º F, then turn on my fan.” This illustrates the logic, not a guaranteed W200 configuration. A temperature sensor or supported temperature reading must be available to the automation, and the action you want—such as a thermostat adjustment—must be exposed in your setup.
- In Shortcuts on iPhone or iPad, create a new home automation using Apple’s documented flow.
- Add an If condition and select an available temperature value as the input.
- Set the threshold and comparison, then add the desired action for the condition to run.
- Review the available inputs and actions before saving; if the temperature reading or target thermostat control is absent, that particular rule cannot be built from the exposed options.

Set up Adaptive Temperature, if your home supports it
Aqara describes Adaptive Temperature as a Home app capability that adjusts supported thermostat behavior based on activity states including home, sleep, away, and extended away. Aqara’s W200 product page ties the feature to iPhone or Apple Watch software version 26 or later; Aqara’s Apple Home guidance further says all home members and the home hub must also run version 26 or later. These are software requirements stated by Aqara, not a guarantee that every account, region, or configuration exposes every state.

- [Accurate Measurement] Utilizes high-quality sensor from the industry-leading manufacturer, Sensirion.(Please avoid installing the Aqara Temperature Sensor in environments with extreme temperatures, such as inside a refrigerator.) Note: Please pull the plastic battery tab out before long-pressing the reset button to start the device. If the device disconnects, please ensure the battery has power. If not, please rotate the temperature sensor to remove the battery cover and replace the battery.
Optional temperature sensor
Aqara’s Temperature and Humidity Sensor measures temperature, humidity, and pressure, works with HomeKit-enabled accessories, and requires an Aqara hub for HomeKit. It may be useful as an independent sensor trigger if that reading is exposed in your Apple Home automation. The reviewed product information does not establish that this sensor can be selected as the W200’s control sensor, so do not assume it will directly govern the thermostat. Details are on Aqara’s Temperature and Humidity Sensor page.
