You can use Show Mode on a compatible Fire tablet to put Alexa’s visual responses on a screen near your Echo. It is a separate device—not a screen upgrade for the Echo—and Amazon does not document pairing the tablet’s display with the Echo’s microphones or speaker hardware.
What Show Mode does—and what it does not do
Amazon describes Show Mode as a way to turn a compatible Fire tablet into a visual display for Alexa. In Show Mode, Alexa responses appear full-screen, so you can see information from across the room. Amazon Customer Service describes it as a way to “engage with Alexa from across the room.” Amazon’s Show Mode instructions explain the feature and how to enable it.

The tablet remains its own Alexa device. Amazon’s documentation does not say that Show Mode connects a tablet screen to an existing Echo, or that the tablet uses the Echo’s microphones or audio hardware. Think of the setup as a Fire tablet showing Alexa responses in the same room as your Echo, not as adding a display to the Echo itself.

Show Mode support is model- and software-specific. Amazon’s U.S. compatibility list names the following tablets; check its current software requirements before setup:

Amazon explicitly marks Fire HD 8 (12th Generation), Fire HD 10 (13th Generation), and Fire Max 11 (13th Generation) as unsupported. A model name alone is not enough: confirm its generation in the tablet’s device information, then compare it with Amazon’s compatibility list and software requirements. The listed models are not necessarily available new for purchase.
Enable Show Mode on a compatible tablet
- Identify the tablet. Confirm its model and generation, and verify that it appears on Amazon’s supported list.
- Update the tablet. Install the software version required for that model by Amazon’s compatibility page.
- Switch modes. Use Show Mode from Quick Actions, enable it through the Alexa app, or ask Alexa to switch modes, as supported by Amazon’s instructions.
- Position the tablet. Place it where its screen is easy to see. A holder or stand can help with viewing angle, but it does not add Show Mode support or connect the screen to your Echo.
Amazon’s instructions describe the available activation routes; labels and availability can vary with device software.

Decide how to place and power the tablet
A regular tablet stand is a simple way to position the Fire tablet near an Echo. It is only a physical holder: it does not enable the feature on an unsupported model or turn the tablet into an Echo display.

The dock holds and charges the tablet and can switch it into Show Mode when Automatic Mode Switching is enabled. Check Amazon’s dock instructions before buying one; it is not a general-purpose dock for newer Fire tablets.

Review Alexa’s microphone and privacy settings
Amazon says that Fire tablet hands-free Alexa streams audio to the cloud after wake-word detection. The tablet provides indicators and settings for managing microphone and camera access and hands-free behavior. The practical choice depends on what you already own and want: Show Mode makes sense if you have a supported Fire tablet and are comfortable placing and powering a separate screen; an Echo Show is designed as an integrated screen-and-Alexa device. Check current local prices and availability before deciding—Amazon’s documentation does not establish today’s prices.
