To add a YouTube stream key to Castr, copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then add YouTube as a destination in your Castr livestream and choose Setup with Server/Key. If you prefer, Castr also documents a connected-account route through YouTube Events.
Before you start
- Open the YouTube channel you want to stream to in YouTube Studio.
- Have your Castr livestream project ready. Castr’s destination controls may be labeled Add destination or Add Platform, depending on the workflow.
- Keep the stream key private; it is the credential Castr uses to send the stream to YouTube.
Add YouTube to Castr with a stream key
- Get the YouTube server and key. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, choose the encoder stream source, and open Stream Settings. Copy the stream server and stream key shown there. Castr’s key-retrieval instructions are documented at How to Find my YouTube Stream Key.
- Open the Castr destination controls. In the livestream project, select Add destination or Add Platform, then choose YouTube. Castr’s connection workflow is described in How to Connect YouTube with Castr.
- Choose the manual connection. Select Setup with Server/Key. Paste the YouTube stream key into the key field. If Castr displays a server field, paste the server details from YouTube into the matching field.
- Create the platform. Submit the setup to add YouTube as a destination. When you are ready to broadcast, enable the destination.
Enable the destination at the right time
Castr recommends leaving destinations off while the stream source is offline and turning them on after the source is live. This sequence can help avoid connection problems on later broadcasts. Castr’s workflow guidance is in How to Start Live Streaming with Castr.
Choose between a key and account connection

Use the account-connected method if you need Castr’s YouTube chat overlay. Castr says custom RTMP does not support that overlay use case; see its YouTube chat overlay guidance.
Troubleshoot a destination that will not connect
- Check the key and server address. If either value has changed, return to YouTube Studio’s Stream Settings, copy the current values, and update the Castr destination.
- Check the destination state. If the source is offline, leave the destination off; enable it after the source is live, following Castr’s workflow recommendation.
- Check which connection method you used. The manual server/key route does not provide the YouTube chat overlay; use the account/API connection for that feature.
- Manage the description in the right place. With manual key setup, Castr says the stream description must be edited in YouTube’s dashboard.
- For other errors, avoid guessing. The setup guidance does not establish one universal fix for authentication or connection failures. Confirm the current YouTube values and Castr destination settings before trying again.
