How to Add a Website to Bluehost: WordPress or Another CMS

A practical guide to adding a second site on Bluehost, choosing WordPress or another CMS, selecting the right domain and directory, and bringing the new site online safely.

Adding a website to an existing Bluehost account has three separate parts: assigning a domain or subdomain, installing a content-management system (CMS), and verifying DNS and HTTPS. For most beginners, Bluehost’s guided WordPress setup is the shortest route. If you need Joomla, Drupal, or another platform available in your account, use cPanel’s Softaculous Apps Installer instead.

This guide covers both workflows without assuming that every Bluehost plan, dashboard, or CMS catalog is identical.

Before you begin

  • An active Bluehost hosting account: Check that your plan permits the number of websites you intend to host. Limits vary by product and can change; Bluehost’s current plan details are at its WordPress hosting pricing page.
  • A domain or subdomain: You can use a domain registered with Bluehost, a domain registered elsewhere, or a subdomain such as blog.example.com.
  • Portal and, for non-WordPress installs, cPanel access.
  • Site details: Prepare a site name, administrator email address, and a unique, strong password.
  • A backup and migration plan: Never install into a document root that already serves a live site without a tested backup and a replacement plan.

Bluehost’s labels may differ between accounts; current documentation uses both “Account Manager” and “Bluehost Portal.” If a button is missing, first confirm that you selected the correct hosting package and that the plan supports another site.

What “add a website” actually involves

A hosting account, a domain, a CMS, and a finished public website are not the same thing:

  • Site container: The hosting plan provides space and resources for one or more sites.
  • Domain and document root: The domain is assigned to a directory where its files live.
  • CMS: WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, or another application is installed in that directory.
  • Public site: DNS must point the domain to Bluehost, SSL must be provisioned, and you still need to configure content, security, and settings.

Installing WordPress does not automatically make a domain registered elsewhere resolve to Bluehost, and it does not create a finished design or business website.

Option 1: Add WordPress from the Bluehost portal

Use this route when you want the guided setup and the WordPress ecosystem. Bluehost’s current workflow is designed to install WordPress from the hosting account rather than through cPanel.

  1. Sign in to your Bluehost account.
  2. Open Hosting and select the hosting account that should contain the new site.
  3. Choose the portal control for adding or installing a WordPress site. The exact label can vary by account.
  4. Select the intended domain or subdomain. Do not select a domain that still serves another production site unless you are deliberately replacing it.
  5. Enter the site name, administrator email, username if requested, and a strong password.
  6. Complete the guided installation and wait for the portal to finish.
  7. Open the supplied WordPress dashboard link and sign in.
  8. Visit the public URL in a separate browser tab. Confirm that it is the intended domain, not a temporary address or an older site.
  9. Test both the HTTPS and HTTP versions. HTTPS should load, and HTTP should redirect to HTTPS once the certificate is active.
  10. Remove or replace any sample pages, posts, themes, plugins, or placeholder content.

Bluehost markets some WordPress products with features such as automatic updates, SSL, migration tools, backups, CDN capabilities, security tools, and an AI site-creation tool. These are product- and plan-specific features, not automatic properties of WordPress itself; verify what is enabled in your account at the current plan page.

If the WordPress add-site control is missing

  • Check the selected plan’s website allowance.
  • Look for a separate Sites, Websites, or Add Site area.
  • Confirm that the domain is added to the account and is not already assigned to another site.
  • Check whether you are viewing a legacy product or a different hosting package.
  • Contact Bluehost support if the account does not match the documented workflow.

Option 2: Install Joomla, Drupal, or another CMS with cPanel

Use this route when you specifically need a non-WordPress CMS or want more control over the installation settings. The catalog depends on what Softaculous offers in your account, so do not assume every CMS is available.

  1. Sign in to the Bluehost portal.
  2. Select Hosting, then open the relevant hosting details.
  3. Click cPanel.
  4. In cPanel, scroll to Software and open Softaculous Apps Installer.
  5. Select the CMS you want, such as Joomla or Drupal, and click Install.
  6. Choose the protocol, domain, and installation directory.
  7. Enter the site name and description.
  8. Create the administrator username, password, and email address.
  9. Review optional settings such as language, themes, plugins, and automatic updates.
  10. Submit the installation, then record the public URL and administrative login URL.
  11. Test both the public site and the CMS dashboard.

Choose the correct installation location

The directory determines where visitors find the site:

Choice Example Result
Domain root public_html https://example.com
Subdirectory public_html/blog https://example.com/blog
Subdomain Assigned to a directory such as public_html/blog https://blog.example.com

Never install into a directory containing another live site. A second installation can overwrite files, conflict with routing rules, or cause the wrong site to appear.

Connect the domain and allow DNS to propagate

When the domain is registered with Bluehost

The domain may be selectable during installation, but verify that it is assigned to the intended hosting account, is not parked or redirected elsewhere, and uses the DNS configuration for the active host.

When the domain is registered elsewhere

At the registrar, either change the nameservers to the values Bluehost provides for your account or point the domain’s A record to the appropriate Bluehost server. Do not use a generic nameserver or IP address from an unrelated guide. DNS changes can take time to propagate, and one network may show the new site while another still reaches the old host.

Verify SSL and HTTPS

  1. Open https://example.com (substitute your domain).
  2. Open the HTTP version and confirm it redirects to HTTPS.
  3. Check that the browser shows no certificate warning or mixed-content warning.
  4. Confirm the CMS site URL uses HTTPS.
  5. Inspect images, scripts, forms, and embedded resources for insecure HTTP links.

Bluehost currently advertises free SSL on applicable plans, but activation and timing depend on the product and domain configuration. If HTTPS is unavailable, first verify that DNS resolves to the correct Bluehost account, then check the account’s SSL status and allow time for provisioning. Do not disable certificate validation or leave a production site on HTTP.

First-day launch checklist

  • Change any password created through a shared or temporary workflow.
  • Set the site title, tagline, language, timezone, and administrative email.
  • Remove sample content and unused themes, plugins, or extensions.
  • Choose a stable permalink or URL structure.
  • Configure backups and confirm that a restoration is possible.
  • Enable automatic updates where appropriate, while testing major updates first.
  • Install only necessary extensions and keep them updated.
  • Add spam protection and secure forms.
  • Set up analytics and Google Search Console.
  • Create privacy, terms, cookie, and contact pages where applicable.
  • Test navigation, forms, mobile layouts, 404 pages, and checkout if you sell products.
  • Create additional users with the least privilege they need rather than sharing the administrator account.

Adding Google Analytics 4

Google’s current process is to create or select a GA4 property, create a web data stream, copy the Measurement ID beginning with G- or AW-, and add it through the CMS integration or a custom HTML field. Follow the platform-specific instructions at Google Analytics Help.

Troubleshooting common failures

The domain is missing from the installer

Confirm that it is registered or added to the account, assigned to the correct hosting package, not already used by another site, and finished with any required DNS or nameserver changes. If you meant to create a subdomain, create or select that subdomain explicitly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrong website appears

Check the domain’s document root in cPanel, the selected installation directory, old files in the web root, DNS records, redirects, and browser, CMS, CDN, or server caches. Verify the CMS-generated site URL.

WordPress is blank or broken

Check PHP compatibility, theme and plugin conflicts, the site and home URLs, file permissions, mixed-content errors, and whether WordPress was installed in a subdirectory. Also confirm that DNS no longer points to the old server.

Softaculous reports an installation error

Record the exact error before changing anything. Existing files, insufficient storage or database resources, invalid credentials, unsupported PHP or database versions, incorrect domain assignment, or a partial earlier install are common causes. Back up existing files and databases, use a clean directory only when it is safe, and contact Bluehost for server-side or permission errors.

The domain already hosts a live site

Do not install over its document root. Use a temporary subdomain, staging site, new domain, or separate directory and plan the migration. A CMS installation is not a harmless test when the selected domain serves production traffic.

Pricing, renewals, and alternatives

Bluehost promotional prices, billing terms, renewal rates, taxes, add-ons, plan names, and website limits vary by product page, term, geography, and promotion. On August 18, 2026, Bluehost pages displayed different introductory figures, including a WordPress-hosting Starter display of $3.99 per month on a 36-month term renewing at $9.99, while another pricing page showed a different Starter promotion. Treat those figures as dated examples and confirm the checkout total at Bluehost’s current pricing page and general pricing page.

Hostinger combines WordPress and its own builder and may show lower introductory pricing, but compare the required upfront term and renewal rate at Hostinger’s official page. Wix combines editing and hosting in one managed platform; it is an alternative to cPanel installation, with pricing that varies by location at Wix Plans. Switching providers when you already have Bluehost adds migration and DNS work.

The Bottom Line

For a new site on an eligible Bluehost plan, use the portal’s guided WordPress setup unless you specifically need another CMS. For Joomla, Drupal, or another platform in your account’s catalog, use Hosting → cPanel → Software → Softaculous Apps Installer, choose a clean document root, then verify DNS, HTTPS, and the administrator dashboard before publishing.
