To add a weather widget, open the Android home screen, touch and hold an empty area, tap Widgets, choose the weather app, then touch and hold its widget and drag it into place. If the app does not appear in the widget picker, it may not provide a widget for your phone or launcher. The exact labels and screens can vary by device, launcher and Android version.
Google Android Help describes the purpose simply: “To quickly get to your favorite content, you can customize your Home screens.” A widget lets you see weather information without opening the full app, but the available designs and controls depend on the app and your Android setup.

What you need before adding the widget
You need an installed weather app that exposes at least one Android widget. A widget is a small home-screen panel supplied by an app; it can show information without requiring you to open the full app. Android only lists widgets that the installed apps make available, so an app can be present on your phone without offering a widget.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the home screen on which you want the weather display.
- Make sure there is an unused area large enough for the widget. Some designs occupy several rows or columns.
- Use the weather app you want to display. Different apps can offer different layouts and controls.
- Be aware that a work profile, a different launcher or a different Android release can change the picker and available commands.
No particular phone accessory is required. The important requirement is an installed app that publishes a widget your current launcher can use. If you are deciding between apps, check the widget picker after installation rather than assuming an app has a design because another phone shows one in a screenshot.

Google’s general Android guidance says some widget instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, and that home-screen steps may differ by phone maker and launcher. Treat the labels below as the standard path rather than a guarantee that every device uses identical wording.
How to add a weather app widget
- Go to the target home screen. Swipe to the particular home-screen page where you want the weather information. You can usually move the widget later, but starting on the intended page avoids extra rearranging.
- Open the home-screen menu. Touch and hold an empty area of the screen. When the customization controls appear, tap Widgets. On some launchers, you may need to tap a similarly named home-screen or customization option first.
- Find the weather app. Scroll through the widget picker until you see the app that supplies your weather information. Tap the app’s name or expand its entry to inspect the available widget designs. An app may provide more than one size or style.
- Pick a design. Touch and hold the weather widget you want. Keep your finger on it while the home screen becomes available for placement.
- Drag it into position. Move the widget to the open area where you want the weather display, then lift your finger. If the location cannot accommodate the widget, Android may return it to the picker or show that the space is unavailable; try another page or clear a larger area.
- Resize it when supported. If an outline with dots or handles appears around the widget, drag those handles to change its width or height. Tap outside the widget when the size is correct. A widget with no resize handles may have a fixed size on that device.
The universal sequence is therefore empty home-screen space → Widgets → weather app → touch and hold → drag. The picker is the authoritative list for your phone: if a design is not listed there, that app is not currently offering it to your launcher.
Move, resize or remove the widget later
You do not have to get the position perfect on the first attempt. Touch and hold the placed widget until the home-screen editing state appears, then drag it to another open area or to another home-screen page if your launcher allows page-to-page movement. The grid may make the widget snap into the nearest available columns and rows.
To change its footprint, touch and hold it and look for the resize outline. Drag the dots or handles, then tap outside the widget to save the new dimensions. Handles appear only when that widget and launcher combination supports resizing. A fixed-size widget is not defective simply because no handles appear.
To remove a widget, touch and hold it and use the launcher’s remove or equivalent home-screen command. Removing the panel does not necessarily uninstall the weather app; it removes the shortcut-like display from the home screen. Menu wording and the location of the remove command vary, so follow the control shown by your launcher.
Choose the right weather widget design
Compact temperature or current-conditions panels
A small panel is useful when you want the current temperature and a brief condition while preserving room for app icons. Its information density and appearance are determined by the weather app. Some compact widgets can be resized horizontally; others remain fixed.
Forecast-focused layouts
Larger designs can show additional days, hourly conditions or more detailed labels when the app supplies those fields. They take more home-screen space, so check the widget’s preview and resize outline before committing to a layout.

Some weather apps expose configuration after placement, such as a location or display preference. The available controls belong to that app, not to Android’s widget picker. If a widget does not show a setting after you place it, consult the weather app’s current help or settings rather than assuming every widget has the same controls.

Compare the preview with the available space
The preview in the picker is a useful indication of the widget’s starting footprint, but the final grid can differ by launcher. A forecast panel that fits on one phone may occupy more rows on another. Start with a clear section of the target page, then use the resize outline—if one appears—to balance readable weather information with room for icons.
What to do when the weather widget is missing
The app does not appear in the widget picker
Return to Widgets and scroll through the complete list. Android’s picker shows the widgets made available by installed apps; it does not promise that every app has one. If the weather app is absent, check that you are looking at the correct launcher and that the app is installed for the current user profile. Then consult that app’s own current help or settings for widget availability.
The app appears, but no weather design is listed
Tap the app’s entry to expand all of its designs. If it has no weather widget there, Android has no widget from that app to place. This is different from a placement failure: the picker itself is telling you that no supported design is available to the launcher.

Check the home-screen page where you dropped it. A widget can be placed on a different page if the screen changed while you were dragging. Touch and hold an open area, open Widgets, and try the placement again in a clearly empty region. If resize handles are present, make the widget smaller so it fits the available grid.
The widget looks different from instructions or screenshots
Android home screens are controlled by the phone maker’s launcher and by software version. Menu labels, widget previews, grid sizes and resizing behavior can differ. Google specifically cautions that general home-screen instructions vary by device, so follow the equivalent control on your phone instead of searching for an exact label that may not exist.
You installed the app but still cannot find its entry
Open the picker from the home screen you normally use, not from an alternate launcher or a managed profile. Scroll through the full alphabetical list and expand the app’s name where possible. If it remains absent, the installed version may simply expose no widget to that launcher. The dependable next step is the app maker’s own help or settings, not repeated attempts to drag an unavailable design.
Use Google’s Discover weather widgets
Google’s Discover experience is separate from a weather widget supplied by another weather app. For Google weather content in Discover, sign in to a Google Account in the Google app and make sure Discover is enabled. Google says the Weather widget is already on the Google app’s Home screen by default.
- Open the Google app and go to its Home or Discover view.
- Locate the Weather widget above the Discover content.
- Swipe left on the Weather widget.
- Tap Customize.
- Choose which widgets to display.
This path changes the widgets shown inside the Google app’s Discover area; it is not the same as placing a weather-app panel on the Android launcher. If you want a panel on the phone’s ordinary home screen, use the launcher’s Widgets picker instead.

If Discover widgets are missing, first verify that the Google app is using the intended Google Account and that Discover is turned on in the app’s settings. Google notes that Search service settings are being updated, so the exact controls may not match every current installation.
Use At a Glance for weather and updates
Google’s At a Glance option can show information and updates such as weather on a home or lock screen where it is supported. It is a separate choice from both a weather-app widget and the Discover Weather widget.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Scroll to Google.
- Touch and hold At a Glance.
- Drag it to the desired location and lift your finger.
Google says the full At a Glance experience is available on Pixel devices running Android 12 or later. Some features are unavailable in particular languages, countries or regions. On other devices, the widget may be absent or may offer a smaller feature set.
Because At a Glance can combine weather with other supported updates, it may not look like a dedicated forecast card. Choose it when a compact Google information panel suits your home screen; choose a weather-app widget when the app’s own forecast layout is more important.
Weather widget options compared
| Option | Where it comes from | Availability | What it can show | Customization and sizing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weather-app widget | The weather app installed on your phone | Only when that app exposes a widget to your launcher | Whatever the app’s listed designs provide, such as current conditions or a forecast | Depends on the app and device; resize handles appear only when the widget supports resizing |
| Discover Weather widget | The Google app’s Discover experience | Requires a signed-in Google Account and Discover enabled; exact controls can vary while Google updates Search settings | Google’s weather content in the Google app | Use the Google app’s Customize control to choose widgets above Discover content |
| At a Glance | Google’s home-screen information widget | Full experience on Pixel devices with Android 12 or later; some features vary by language, country and region | Weather plus other supported information and updates | Placed from the Google section of the widget picker; available features depend on device and region |
There is no universal accuracy or update-frequency ranking established by these setup instructions. Choose based on whether the option exists on your device, which information and layout you prefer, and how much control the widget gives you.
Understand Android and launcher differences
Android version
Some Google widget steps are documented specifically for Android 14 and later. Older releases can use a similar touch-and-hold gesture while presenting different menus. At a Glance’s full experience is documented for Pixel devices on Android 12 or later.
Phone maker and launcher
The launcher determines the home-screen grid, the widget picker’s appearance and the available customization commands. A phone may use a manufacturer launcher, a third-party launcher or a managed work profile, each of which can change what you see. The underlying action remains selecting an available widget and dragging it to an open grid area.

Google’s general Android help says the main Home screen can show the date, weather and a few apps by default. That describes device-dependent default behavior; it does not mean every Android launcher places a separate weather widget automatically. If no weather display appears, open the widget picker and add one manually.

Why a screenshot may not match your phone
Widget names, previews, grid dimensions and customization buttons are launcher-specific. An instruction written for a Pixel can therefore look different on another manufacturer’s phone even when the gesture is the same. Use the functional equivalent—an empty-space long press, a widget list and a drag operation—rather than treating a different visual design as an error.

There is not enough room
Move icons or other widgets away from the target area, switch to another home-screen page, or use a smaller design. If the widget has resize handles, reduce its dimensions after placement.
You cannot resize it
Touch and hold the widget once. If no outline or dots appear, that design may not be resizable on your device. Choose another design from the same app if you need a different footprint.

You selected the wrong app
Remove or move the misplaced widget using your launcher’s home-screen controls, then reopen Widgets and select the intended weather app. Because widget behavior is launcher-specific, the exact removal label can differ; look for the launcher’s remove or move command rather than changing the app itself.
Discover content is unavailable
Open the Google app, confirm the intended account is signed in, and enable Discover in the app’s settings. If the setting names differ, Google’s Search service changes may be responsible for the different presentation.
At a Glance is not listed
Open the widget picker’s Google section. If At a Glance is not offered, your device, Android version, language or region may not support the full experience. Use a weather-app widget instead if the weather app provides one.
The drag ends without placing anything
Start again from a clearly empty part of the target page and keep your finger down until the home screen accepts the widget. If the grid rejects the drop, free a larger area or select a smaller design. A failed drop does not show that the app lacks a widget; the picker entry and the placement space are separate checks.

How to decide which method to use
- Use the weather app’s widget when you want that app’s particular forecast design and it appears in the widget picker.
- Use Discover’s Weather widget when you already use the Google app and want weather content integrated above Discover cards.
- Use At a Glance when you have a supported Pixel and prefer a compact Google information panel that can include weather alongside other updates.
Whichever method you choose, start by checking what your phone actually lists under Widgets. Availability on that screen is more reliable than a generic screenshot or instructions written for another Android version.

A quick decision checklist
- Decide whether the weather should live on the ordinary Android home screen or inside Google’s Discover view.
- For the ordinary home screen, open Widgets and confirm that your chosen app or Google option is listed.
- Choose a design that fits the available grid space and shows the information you actually want.
- After placement, test whether resize handles or app-specific settings are available; do not assume every design supports them.
- If the option is missing, verify account and Discover requirements for Google features, or consult the weather app’s own help for an app-specific widget.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add a weather widget to my Android home screen?
Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen, tap Widgets, find the weather app, touch and hold the desired design, drag it to an open area, and lift your finger.
Where are widgets on Android?
On the home screen, touch and hold an empty area, then tap Widgets. The exact menu wording can vary by launcher and Android version.
Why can’t I find my weather app widget?
The app may not provide a widget to your current launcher. Expand the app’s entry in the widget picker; if no design appears, check the app’s own help or settings.
Can every Android weather widget be resized?
No. Resize handles or dots appear only when that widget supports resizing on your device. A widget without handles may have a fixed size.
Is Google Discover Weather the same as a home-screen weather widget?
No. Discover Weather is managed inside the Google app and requires a signed-in Google Account with Discover enabled. A home-screen widget is placed from the Android launcher’s Widgets picker.
What is At a Glance, and does every Android phone have it?
At a Glance can show weather and other updates. Google documents the full experience for Pixel devices running Android 12 or later, with some features limited by language, country or region.
How do I remove a weather widget without deleting the app?
Touch and hold the widget and use your launcher’s remove or equivalent home-screen command. This removes the panel from the home screen; it does not necessarily uninstall the app.
Why do Android widget instructions look different on my phone?
Phone makers, third-party launchers and Android versions can change labels, grid sizes, previews and available controls. Follow the equivalent empty-space, Widgets, touch-and-hold and drag actions.
The Bottom Line
Open an empty area of the Android home screen, tap Widgets, choose an available weather provider, then touch, hold and drag its widget into place. Resize it only if handles appear; if the provider is missing, use its own help or choose another supported Google or weather-app option.
