For a single screenshot, capture it with Snipping Tool, open it in Paint, and type the date and time with Paint’s text tool. Windows’ current Snipping Tool instructions do not describe an automatic, visible timestamp overlay. If you need timestamps on every capture, use a third-party workflow such as ShareX, but check its controls and placeholder syntax in the version you install.
Choose the kind of timestamp you actually need
“Add a timestamp” can mean three different things. Decide first, because only one of them permanently marks the picture itself.
| Result | What the reader sees | Useful for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visible image overlay | Date and time are rendered into the image pixels. | Evidence, reports, printed records and screenshots shared without their original file. | You must add the text manually or configure an application to do it. |
| Filename timestamp | The date and time appear in the saved filename. | Sorting and finding captures later. | The timestamp is not visible inside the image. |
| File date or metadata | Windows stores dates in file properties or related metadata. | Basic file organization. | Someone viewing the picture may never see that information, and copying or exporting the file can change it. |
A 2015 Microsoft Q&A answer described the saved snip’s date and time as file information rather than text on the image. Treat that as historical guidance, not a guarantee about every current Windows build or image format.
Add a visible timestamp once with Snipping Tool and Paint
This is the dependable built-in method when you only need an occasional timestamp. The date and time are entered by you; Snipping Tool does not document a current-date macro that inserts them automatically.

- Capture the screen. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, or press Windows+Shift+S. Select rectangle, window, full-screen or freeform capture as appropriate.
- Open the capture in the editor. The capture is copied to the Snipping Tool window, where you can make changes, save and share it. Microsoft describes this as the normal capture/edit workflow.
- Send it to Paint. Choose Edit > Edit with Paint. If your build shows a slightly different label, use the Paint option in the Snipping Tool toolbar or menu.
- Insert the text. In Paint, choose the Text tool, drag a box in an unused area and type a clear value such as
2026-09-30 14:35 UTC. Select the font, size, color and background before clicking outside the text box. - Save a copy. Use File > Save as and choose PNG for crisp text, JPEG for a smaller photographic file, or WebP when your destination supports it. Keep the untouched capture if it may be needed later.
Use an unambiguous format: year-month-day followed by 24-hour time. Add a timezone such as “UTC” or “America/New_York” when people in different locations may review the file. A local clock without a timezone can be misunderstood around daylight-saving changes.
Make the overlay readable and defensible
Position and contrast
- Place the label in a margin or empty corner, not over a button, value or line of code that may matter.
- Use high contrast and enough size to survive resizing or printing. A light rectangle behind dark text is often easier to read than a shadow alone.
- Leave a small margin from the edge so the label is not clipped by social-media previews, document frames or printers.
Preserve evidence
Keep the original capture and the annotated copy as separate files. If the timestamp is being used as evidence, record how the time was obtained and the timezone in a note or accompanying record. An on-image label shows what you typed; it does not independently prove that the computer clock was accurate.
Date only versus date and time
A date is sufficient for a daily status report. Use hours, minutes and seconds for troubleshooting, incident timelines or rapidly changing pages. Include seconds only when they help establish order; excessive precision can imply accuracy you did not verify.
Apply timestamps automatically with ShareX
ShareX is a plausible choice for repeated automatic overlays. A ShareX community response points to capture-task image effects, and a third-party guide describes enabling Apply image effects, adding a Text effect and using %t as a current date/time placeholder.
Recommended Free Tools
Those instructions are version-sensitive: the exact menu names, token behavior and formatting controls are not established by current official ShareX documentation in the available material. Confirm them in your installed release before relying on the result.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Open ShareX and find the settings for the capture task or post-capture image effects.
- Enable the option equivalent to Apply image effects.
- Add a Text effect and enter the timestamp placeholder supported by your release. The documented third-party example uses
%t. - Choose the text position, font, color and background. Make a test capture containing a clock or other known time.
- Check the saved image itself, not only the preview, and verify that the time changes on a second capture.
If %t appears literally, produces an unexpected format or does not change, do not assume the configuration worked. Open the effect’s token/help panel, consult the version’s documentation or update the pattern using the syntax shown by that build.
Use a timestamped filename instead
If your goal is sorting rather than visible proof, configure the screenshot application’s filename pattern. ShareX community guidance includes date/time pattern examples, but tokens can vary by release and destination. Use the pattern editor supplied by your version, capture two files a minute apart and confirm that the names sort chronologically.
A filename is often the least intrusive option for large batches because it does not cover page content. It is not equivalent to a visible timestamp: renaming a file does not alter the pixels and does not help someone who receives only a pasted image.

Greenshot’s official help documents an image editor and a text tool, so it can support the same manual annotation approach as Paint. The available documentation does not establish an automatic timestamp overlay. Use it for manual text unless your installed version explicitly documents a timestamp effect, and test the saved output before adopting it for a repeatable process.
What about adding the webpage URL?
A timestamp and a source URL solve different problems. The ShareX workflow described above does not automatically add the URL of the page you captured. The cited community guidance suggests copying the URL and adding it as text manually in the editor. Do not promise automatic URL stamping unless your configured tool demonstrates it in a test capture.

Comparison: which approach fits your job?
| Approach | Visible in image? | Entry method | Best use | Confidence in documented behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool → Paint | Yes | Manual text | One-off or occasional captures | High for capture and Paint handoff; no automatic date macro documented |
| ShareX image effect | Yes | Potentially automatic | Repeated captures | Version-sensitive community and third-party instructions |
| ShareX filename pattern | No | Automatic filename generation | Sorting and archiving | Pattern syntax must be checked in the installed version |
| Greenshot editor | Yes | Manual text | Manual annotation with another editor | Official help supports text editing; automatic timestamp not established |
| File properties | No | Windows-managed metadata | Basic file organization | Behavior depends on format and later file operations |
Troubleshooting
The timestamp is missing from the saved image
Make sure you saved the edited copy rather than the original Snipping Tool capture. Reopen the output file in an image viewer and zoom in. If the text is absent, return to Paint, click outside the text box to commit it, then save as a new file.
The text is cut off
Resize the text box before committing the text, move it farther from the edge and save again. Check the final dimensions after any resize or export operation.
The time is wrong
Check the Windows clock, timezone and automatic time settings. If the capture is part of an incident record, write the timezone directly in the label and preserve the original file for later comparison.
ShareX shows %t instead of a time
Your release may use a different token or may require the text effect to be attached to the capture task. Open the effect’s help or token selector and test with a fresh capture. Treat third-party instructions as guidance, not a guarantee for every build.
The URL is not included
That is expected in the described ShareX timestamp setup. Copy the page address and add it with a second text annotation, or keep the URL in the case record beside the image.

The image looks blurry after annotation
Prefer PNG for UI text and screenshots containing small type. Avoid repeatedly opening and resaving JPEG files, because each JPEG export can discard detail.

If your actual task is capturing a webpage rather than a local Windows window, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one HTTP request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not require you to keep a browser window open. The API call itself returns the page image, so add any timestamp text in your own downstream annotation step when a visible timestamp is required.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
