Run an encoder on the Contabo VPS to combine a still image and an audio playlist into one video-and-audio stream, then send that encoded output to YouTube Live. YouTube does not receive the image and playlist as separate inputs in this setup. You supply them to the encoder, which sends the finished stream to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
What you need before you start
- A Contabo VPS with an operating system and encoder setup you can administer. The exact plan, CPU, RAM, network capacity, and available encoding hardware depend on the instance; no specific Contabo configuration is established here as sufficient.
- A still image and audio files stored where the encoder can read them. Check their paths, file permissions, and formats.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says enabling live streaming for a first-time account can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
There is no universal command that can be safely supplied without knowing your operating system, encoder build, media formats, playlist mechanism, and YouTube account setup. Validate the implementation against those details rather than copying an unverified command onto a production server.

Set up the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter both in your encoder’s connection settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or paste it into public examples.
- Choose the ingestion protocol your encoder supports. For an RTMP-family workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection through Google’s servers. The encoder sends its finished audio/video output to the endpoint; the still image and audio playlist remain inputs on the VPS.
Prepare the image and playlist on the VPS
Make the still image readable
Place the image in a stable location and confirm the encoder’s service account can read it. Check that the file opens, its dimensions suit the intended output, and the encoder is configured to keep the image on screen while audio continues. A missing path, inaccessible file, or unsupported image format can result in black or absent video.
Make the audio files play in the intended order
Store the audio files on the VPS and confirm that the encoder can decode each one. Configure a playlist or other supported input mechanism for the order and repeat behavior you want. YouTube’s setup documentation does not prescribe a playlist file syntax: that depends on the encoder and its version. Test whether the final track advances to the next item and whether the list repeats, if looping is intended.

Before connecting to YouTube, confirm that the encoder combines the image and audio into a single outgoing audio/video stream. Check that audio is actually selected and included in the output, rather than merely available as a local input.
Choose output settings
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 frames per second, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For a simple still-image broadcast, SDR with Rec. 709 is a straightforward choice unless you have a genuine HDR source and a reason to use HDR. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
H.264 video bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube Help recommendations, not a guarantee of the bandwidth available on a particular Contabo instance. The table is for H.264; choose a target that your encoder and VPS can sustain, and leave operational headroom.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
YouTube also recommends testing upload speed and selecting a quality suitable for the connection. The figures above cover video bitrate; account for audio and network overhead as well. The sustained upload available to your VPS must support your chosen output. No particular Contabo plan’s upload rate or workload capacity is established here.
Audio and picture settings
- For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio; its stereo recommendations include a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate.
- Use square pixels and progressive scan among the advanced output settings where your encoder exposes them.
- Match the output frame rate to your intended broadcast. A static image does not require 60 fps merely because YouTube supports it.
RTMPS or HLS?
Use RTMPS when your encoder supports YouTube’s RTMP-family workflow and you want the simpler continuous-stream setup. HLS is a separate ingestion method, not just an interchangeable protocol toggle: YouTube requires 1–4-second MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup requirements and use HLS only if your encoder can meet them.
Test the complete broadcast before relying on it
YouTube Help says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” For this static-image format, apply that advice by testing the actual image, audio, playlist transitions, and encoder output before running unattended. Monitor YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during the test and broadcast.

Common problems and what to check
Black screen or no image
Check the image path, file permissions, whether the image opens, its dimensions, and the encoder’s video-input configuration. Confirm the encoder is actually including video in its outgoing stream.
No audio
Check each playlist path and file permission, decoder support for the audio formats, the selected audio stream, and whether the encoder muxes audio into the output sent to YouTube.
Playlist does not advance or repeat
Check the playlist mechanism and its configuration in the documentation for your encoder version. Confirm that the files are accessible in the order specified, then observe a full transition during the preflight test; YouTube does not control local playlist behavior.

Dropped frames or unstable ingestion
Review encoder logs, VPS CPU and network use, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and whether the chosen bitrate exceeds the connection’s sustained capacity. YouTube recommends matching quality to the available connection and testing upload speed.
HLS input is rejected
Check that the encoder produces MPEG-TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds, maintains no more than five outstanding segments in its rolling playlist, uses HTTPS POST/PUT, and does not use byte ranges.
The stream stops or the archive is missing
Stopping encoder output ends the stream. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer broadcasts. Check the stream’s status and archive in YouTube after the event.

Keep the VPS encoder running—or use a cloud service
A VPS workflow means you are responsible for configuring the encoder, maintaining access to the media files, monitoring the process, and validating its recovery behavior. CPU, network, and encoding-hardware requirements vary with the encoder and output settings. OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance explains that compatible hardware can shift work away from the CPU, while older-generation hardware encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with its default veryfast preset. That does not establish that a particular Contabo VPS includes a suitable GPU.

The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
Copyright and YouTube live rules
Only stream audio and images you have the rights or appropriate permission to use. A static image does not make copyrighted music permissible, and looping a playlist does not change the underlying rights. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and live-stream notices for your channel before broadcasting. Also make sure your stream is a genuine, permitted use of the material rather than assuming that continuous or repetitive playback is automatically eligible for monetization; the requirements depend on YouTube’s current policies and the content.
