Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a block theme, add or select a Navigation block in the Site Editor, set its overlay visibility to Mobile or Always, and customize the overlay template if needed. For a classic theme, use a menu plugin or build the toggle, panel styling, and interaction around WordPress’s wp_nav_menu() function; that function alone does not create a slide-out drawer.
Choose the approach that fits your WordPress theme
| Approach | Best fit | What it provides | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navigation block | Block themes with the Site Editor | Built-in overlay visibility settings and an editable overlay template | Assign the menu to the Navigation block, save, and inspect the front end |
| Plugin | Site owners who prefer configuration over custom development | Responsive Menu’s WordPress.org listing describes an off-canvas panel using an existing WordPress menu, with direction and animation choices | These are vendor-listed capabilities; confirm compatibility and behavior on your site |
| Theme development | Classic themes or sites needing theme-level control | wp_nav_menu() renders a WordPress navigation menu |
A complete drawer also requires a toggle, styling, and interaction behavior |
Add a slide-out panel with the Navigation block
- Open the Site Editor and edit the template part where the menu belongs, commonly the Header.
- Insert a Navigation block or select the existing one. Choose an existing menu or create one.
- In the Navigation block settings, set Overlay visibility to Mobile to collapse the navigation at smaller sizes, or Always to show a menu toggle at all sizes.
- Choose whether the toggle uses an icon or the text labels “Menu” and “Close.”
- To change the panel’s contents or layout, create and edit the Navigation block’s overlay template.
- Save the Site Editor changes and preview the front end at the screen sizes you intend to support.
Creating or managing a menu in the Site Editor does not put it on the site by itself. It must be assigned to a Navigation block in a template part.
Use a plugin for a configurable off-canvas menu
The Responsive Menu listing in the WordPress.org plugin directory says the plugin can use an existing WordPress menu and display it as a hamburger menu with an off-canvas slide-in panel. Its listing describes entry from the left, right, top, or bottom and slide or push animation options. Treat these as listed capabilities, not independent test results: check current compatibility and test the plugin on the specific site before relying on it.
Build a drawer in a classic theme
WordPress documents wp_nav_menu() as a function for displaying a navigation menu, with arguments including the selected menu and its container. It supplies the menu-rendering route, not a finished slide-out panel. A custom implementation must also provide a toggle, panel styling, and interaction behavior, then be validated in the theme where it will run.
#1 Best Overall
See the WordPress developer reference for wp_nav_menu() for the function and its arguments. The official reference does not describe the function alone as a complete drawer implementation.

Check the menu’s interaction and presentation
- Confirm that the toggle appears where intended and opens and closes the panel.
- Check the panel at the intended screen sizes and verify its direction and contents.
- Review submenu behavior: Navigation block submenu settings can open on hover or click. Consider how the selected behavior works with touchscreens and keyboard input.
- Use WordPress’s block-theme accessibility guidance when reviewing accessible navigation and responsive support. The guidance does not establish a complete accessibility test procedure for every custom menu.
- Preview the front end after saving; the editor configuration alone does not confirm that the desired menu appears correctly in the active theme.
