How to Add a Second User Profile to a Googlebook

To create a separate device profile on a Googlebook, open Settings > System > Users > Add user, then enter the second person’s Google credentials. After setup, sign out to the lock screen, choose the profile, and authenticate with that user’s password or PIN.

A device user is different from adding another Google Account inside your existing profile. A user gets a separate device space with its own settings, files, wallpaper, password and PIN.

What a second Googlebook user profile does

Google supports multiple users on a Googlebook so people can share one device while keeping their personal environments separate. Each user signs in to an independent device-level space. Files and settings belonging to one user are not merged into the other user’s space.

The first person added to the device is normally the device administrator. That administrator controls user management, including adding or removing profiles.

How to add the second user

  1. Sign in to the Googlebook using the device administrator profile.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to System > Users.
  4. Select Add user.
  5. Enter the second user’s Google credentials and complete the on-screen setup.

The new user can then configure a separate password or PIN, wallpaper and personal settings. Their files are stored in that user’s device space rather than in the first user’s environment.

How to switch between users

  1. Sign out of the current Googlebook session.
  2. At the lock screen, select the profile you want to use.
  3. Enter that user’s password or PIN.

Switching this way opens the selected user’s settings, files and applications. You do not need to add the same Google Account again merely to move between device users.

Separate user or additional Google Account?

Choose based on how much separation you need. A separate device user is the stronger choice when two people need independent files, settings or sign-in spaces. Adding an account within the existing user is faster when the goal is only to access another account in applications or websites.

Adding a work or school account

For a work or school identity, Google documents two options:

Create a separate device user

Use Settings > System > Users > Add user. This keeps the managed identity in its own device-level space and is the better option when personal and organizational files should be separated.

Add the account to the current user

From the existing profile, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts > Add account. This is more convenient when only app-level access is required, but it provides less isolation than a separate user.

An organization’s administrator may restrict sign-in or managed features on a personal Googlebook. If the account cannot be added, the restriction may be imposed by the organization rather than caused by an incorrect password.

Important limitation: Chrome browser profiles

Adding a second device user does not currently provide multiple Chrome browser profiles inside one Googlebook user environment. Chrome on Googlebook OS does not yet support multiple browser profiles. Google has indicated that support is planned for a future update, but no release date has been provided.

If the requirement is simply to use two websites’ accounts, adding the second account within the current user may be sufficient. If the requirement is separate browser data and device files for two people, use separate device users and switch at the lock screen.

Removing users and administrator limits

Removing the only administrator

If the only device administrator is being removed, administrator status must first be granted to another user. The device needs another administrator before the current administrator can be removed.

Removing the only user

When the Googlebook has only one user and that user must be removed, Google says a factory reset is required. A factory reset erases the device, so back up any files that need to be kept before proceeding.

Quick decision checklist

  • Use Add user when each person needs separate files, settings and sign-in protection.
  • Add an account inside the current user when only application or website access needs to be shared.
  • Use a separate user for stronger personal/work separation, while checking whether an organization blocks managed sign-in.
  • Do not expect a second device user to create a second Chrome browser profile.
  • Confirm another administrator exists before removing the current administrator.
