To reduce the chance of interrupting the clip currently playing, build the revised playlist in a second VLC Video source or scene, preview it, then switch at a planned point. This keeps the encoder session running, but OBS does not guarantee that every source or scene switch will be seamless; test the handoff with your installed OBS and VLC versions.
Choose the right OBS source
For a loop made from several recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source. It supports playlists, unlike the built-in Media Source, which is intended for an individual audio or video file. OBS describes VLC Video as able to create a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow (OBS Project: Media Sources).

VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear in OBS. Match the VLC installation architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the new demo is a standalone file rather than part of a playlist, Media Source may be appropriate, but incorporating it into an existing loop takes additional scene or source control.

Safest practical method: prepare a second playlist
- Leave the current live scene and playlist alone. Note the order of the current videos and any loop, shuffle, or visibility settings that affect playback.
- Create a staging source or scene. In OBS’s Sources dock, add a new VLC Video source, or create a separate scene and add the source there. Give it a clear name, such as “Updated demo loop.”
- Build the revised playlist. Add the existing recordings and the new product demo in the intended order. Set loop and shuffle as required, and preview the staged source before taking it live.
- Check what happens when the source is hidden. VLC Video has visibility behavior settings that can stop and restart, pause and resume, or keep playing while hidden. Test the setting with your planned scene-switch workflow. A source configured to stop and restart may begin again when it becomes visible.
- Switch at an acceptable handoff point. When the current demo finishes, or at another point you are willing to use, switch to the prepared scene/source. Leave the broadcast running: do not press Stop Streaming.
- Verify the outgoing content. Check the OBS preview and, if available to you, YouTube Live Control Room to confirm the expected video is going out.
OBS documents adding and managing sources as part of a scene’s composition, which makes a staged source a reasonable way to prepare the change before switching. The documentation does not promise a glitch-free transition for every setup. Treat this as a lower-risk handoff to test locally, not a guarantee of uninterrupted frames (OBS Project: Sources Guide).

What happens if you edit the active VLC playlist?
Editing the active playlist is simpler, but it can restart that source’s playback. In the current OBS VLC source implementation, applying source settings stops the media-list player, replaces the list, and starts playback again when the source is active or configured to always play. That can send playback back to the start even while the YouTube broadcast remains live. The cited implementation does not establish a way to append an item to the active list while preserving its exact current playhead (OBS Studio VLC source implementation).
One OBS forum user reported that adding an item to a VLC playlist returned playback to the first video. That is an individual report, consistent with the implementation, not proof that every OBS/VLC setup behaves identically (OBS forum discussion).

If restarting the current clip is acceptable, you can edit the active VLC Video source’s playlist and apply the change, then check the output. If preserving the current clip matters, stage a second playlist instead.
Why a source switch is different from stopping the stream
OBS’s scene and source controls change the composition being sent by OBS. Stop Streaming ends the streaming session; switching what the running scene outputs is a separate operation. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance concerns the connection and ingestion protocol, not how OBS rebuilds a local VLC playlist, and it does not guarantee that a particular scene switch will be invisible to viewers (YouTube Live: Ingestion Protocols).

In short, you can keep the broadcast session active while changing the content, but the local player may restart when its playlist is rebuilt, and a scene/source handoff may still produce a visible transition. Preview and test the specific workflow before relying on it for a critical broadcast.
