How to Add a Now Playing Overlay to a Podcast YouTube Live Stream

To show what is playing on a podcast YouTube livestream, add an OBS Browser Source pointing to an overlay webpage, or use an OBS Text Source for a manually updated episode label. The key is choosing a data source that actually knows the information you want to show: a music-track overlay may update when a song changes, but that does not mean it can identify the podcast episode you are discussing.

First decide what “now playing” means

There are two different jobs that are easy to confuse:

  • Podcast episode: You want to display the episode title or guest while you discuss it. Use a source that provides that episode metadata, or maintain the label yourself in OBS.
  • Music track: You want a label that changes when the music playing during the stream changes. A track-oriented overlay provider may update automatically when its connected player reports a new track.

Do not assume a music overlay can discover a podcast episode. The reviewed Now Playing setup material describes track changes, not general podcast episode detection. Verify metadata compatibility with the specific player and service before relying on automatic updates.

Option 1: Add an automatic track overlay in OBS

This route is appropriate when the overlay provider is connected to a player that reports the track currently playing. The provider supplies the webpage; OBS displays it in your scene.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Get the overlay URL. In the provider’s account dashboard, open its overlay area and copy the URL. Check the dashboard’s recommended browser-source dimensions. The provider’s dashboard guide also offers a sample-track preview. Now Playing overlay guide
  2. Add it to the scene. In OBS Studio, select the scene, click + in the Sources panel, choose Browser, and give the source a recognizable name such as “Now Playing.” Paste the overlay URL into the URL field and set the width and height to the provider’s recommended size. OBS documents Browser Source as a way to add a webpage to a scene. OBS Browser Source guide
  3. Position and layer it. Place the source where it will not cover the host, captions, or other essential content. In the Sources list, keep it above the video layer it should overlay. Resize or reposition it on the canvas as needed.
  4. Preview the actual output. Use the provider’s sample-track preview, then check the result in OBS at your stream’s output resolution. Confirm that the text is legible, fits the intended area, and updates when the connected track changes.

The provider says its overlay is a live webpage that updates when the connected track changes and that it can be added as a Browser Source without plugins or scripts. That describes a track workflow; it does not establish automatic detection of the podcast episode currently under discussion.

Option 2: Show a podcast episode title with an OBS Text Source

If the label is for the episode being discussed, a simple manual text source is often more dependable than assuming an unrelated player can supply episode metadata.

  1. Create the label. In OBS, select the scene and click + in Sources. Choose Text (GDI+) on Windows or Text (FreeType 2) on macOS or Linux; the available label varies by operating system. Name it “Episode title.”
  2. Enter the episode information. Type the title, guest, or other short identifier into the text field. OBS Text Sources are customizable text sources. OBS Sources guide
  3. Style and place it. Choose readable typography and color, then position the source so it does not obscure the host or important scene content. Keep the wording short enough to remain legible at the final output size.
  4. Update it when the episode changes. Edit the Text Source before the new segment or episode begins. Preview the scene after each edit so a long title does not run off the canvas or overlap other elements.

The sources reviewed do not establish a universal podcast-player-to-OBS episode overlay. If you want automatic episode updates, confirm that the integration explicitly reads episode metadata from the player or service you use; otherwise, treat the title as a manual label.

Using another widget provider

Streamlabs documents a general widget route: copy a widget URL into an OBS Browser Source or another supported streaming application, then set its dimensions and position on the canvas. It also documents an overlay library and a plugin route for bringing Streamlabs overlays into OBS Studio. Streamlabs widget instructions Streamlabs overlays guide

These are ways to place widgets in a scene, not proof that a particular widget can identify podcast episodes. Before choosing one, check that its data source exposes the exact title you need and whether changes are automatic or producer-managed.

Check the overlay before going live

  • Metadata: Does the source report a music track, a podcast episode, or something else? Test the specific information you plan to display.
  • Update behavior: Does it change automatically, or must you edit text in OBS? Know who will make the update and when.
  • Visual fit: Verify dimensions, placement, contrast, and readability in the scene preview at the intended output resolution.
  • Fallback: Decide what viewers will see if the player stops reporting metadata or the overlay webpage stops updating. For an episode label, keeping a manually editable OBS Text Source available gives you a direct fallback.
  • Test mode: If the provider offers a preview or sample output, use it before broadcast. The reviewed Now Playing dashboard guide describes a sample-track preview; Streamlabs also advises setting widget dimensions and position.

OBS also notes that stream alerts are not built directly into OBS; third-party alert overlays can be embedded as Browser Sources. This reflects the same division of work: the provider supplies the page or widget, and OBS places it in the scene. OBS stream overlays guide
