Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Add a now-playing overlay in OBS by placing a browser-based overlay or text label above your gameplay in the scene sent to YouTube. Test the finished picture before going live. One important limitation: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a continuous 24/7 broadcast is not a reliable way to create one complete VOD.
Choose what “now playing” should show
First identify the information you want viewers to see. A game title or session status, a song title, and a manually updated message are different things and may need different sources. An overlay service can display only the data its integration actually receives; a music overlay does not automatically detect the game on screen or identify arbitrary system audio.

- Game or session label: use a source that supports the specific game metadata you need, or enter the label yourself. Do not assume a music overlay can detect it.
- Music track: Now Playing documents a desktop app connected to DJ software as its input path for track information. Its documented flow is not universal game-title detection. See Now Playing’s OBS setup guide.
- Manual status: use a text label you control in OBS if the information changes infrequently or no supported automatic source exists.
Add a hosted overlay in OBS
- Configure the overlay and copy its URL. In the overlay service, select the content and appearance you want, then copy its browser-source URL. Check what its data source can read and treat an account-specific URL as private. Now Playing documents a Test control and recommends refreshing the browser source if the overlay appears stuck: Dashboard guide.
- Open the YouTube scene in OBS. Select the scene used for your stream. In Sources, choose + → Browser, create the source, and paste the overlay URL. OBS Browser Source displays a webpage in a scene and is commonly used for overlays. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Set the browser-source dimensions. Use the overlay provider’s recommended width and height, or match the output canvas. Now Playing gives 1920×1080 as its standard 1080p example and advises matching a different canvas when applicable. The overlay may be cropped or scaled unexpectedly if its dimensions do not suit the canvas; follow the provider’s guidance rather than assuming every overlay uses the same size.
- Layer and position it. Keep the browser source above the gameplay source in OBS’s Sources stack so it appears over the game. Use the preview and source transforms to position it clear of the game HUD and important action. Now Playing suggests a bottom position for gaming layouts, but the safe location depends on the game’s interface: overlay customization guide.
- Test the composed output. Use the provider’s simulated-track Test control if available. Check that the text and artwork update, are readable, and do not cover important gameplay. Make a local recording or a private/unlisted test stream if you need to verify what viewers will actually receive; a preview alone may not establish how the encoded output looks.
- Update a reset URL. If an account-specific overlay URL is exposed, Now Playing says resetting it disables the old URL immediately. Replace the URL in the OBS browser source with the new one.
Use an OBS text label when updates can be manual
If you only need a game name, session status, or occasional announcement, a manually controlled text source avoids depending on a third-party metadata integration. Add and position the label in the same scene as the gameplay, then update it when the information changes. This is not automatic track or game detection: someone must keep the text accurate. Test the label in the composed output just as you would a browser overlay.

Plan the VOD around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local archive backup. This is YouTube’s operational guidance, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be archived.

For a channel that needs both continuous availability and dependable VOD files, use shorter broadcast segments, end each one cleanly, and record locally. After each segment, check the resulting archive and confirm the overlay is present. YouTube’s DVR guidance describes a separate issue: on streams longer than 12 hours, live rewind may be limited or unavailable. DVR behavior during a broadcast and whether YouTube captures a finished archive are distinct.
Keep music rights separate from the overlay
A song title displayed on screen does not grant permission to broadcast the song. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights; archived content is also subject to the applicable agreement. Confirm that you have the rights needed for both the live stream and its archive. Attribution in a now-playing label does not substitute for those rights.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, rather than from an OBS scene or a live camera. To use an overlay with it, first include the overlay in the video you upload; StreamNeo’s documented workflow does not add a live-updating overlay to gameplay on its own.
- Upload a recording with the overlay already included in the video, or build a playlist of prepared videos.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo sends your uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
