To show the lesson currently playing on a continuous YouTube education stream, add a browser-source graphic to your encoder and update it from the same playlist or schedule that controls playback. YouTube accepts encoder video and documents browser-source overlays, but its guidance does not provide a ready-made lesson-title widget. The title feed and the logic that changes it are yours to build and keep synchronized.
How the now-playing title works
Your encoder combines the lesson video with a graphic layer, then sends the finished live feed to YouTube. The graphic displays a title supplied by a schedule, playlist, or operator control. The crucial design choice is to use one source of truth for both playback order and title order: if the video and overlay use separate lists or clocks, they can drift apart.

YouTube describes the encoder’s role this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” YouTube Help’s encoder guide explains the encoder workflow. The lesson-title synchronization described here is an implementation pattern, not a turnkey feature documented by YouTube.

1. Make a single lesson schedule
Record each lesson in playback order and include the title plus the information needed to determine when it starts and ends, such as its duration or position in the sequence. Have both the playback system and title updater read from this schedule. For a fixed prerecorded loop, map elapsed playback time to the active lesson; if an operator advances lessons manually, provide a control to set the current lesson.

Those are design choices rather than a playlist schema prescribed by YouTube. Make the schedule’s behavior explicit at boundaries: decide whether the title changes exactly when the next lesson begins, what appears during gaps, and what to show if title data is missing.
2. Create the graphic as a browser source
Build a small web page or local HTML graphic that displays the current title. Use legible type, strong contrast, and a position within the video’s safe margins so the text remains visible on different screens. Configure the browser source’s dimensions to match the encoder’s output canvas. YouTube’s documented browser-source example is an away or break overlay; adapt the source setup for your own lesson graphic rather than treating that example as an automatic title solution. 3. Connect the title to playback
Make the overlay receive the current title from the shared schedule or a control page. Depending on your setup, it can refresh or receive updated data at each lesson boundary. Test that the overlay changes when playback changes, not merely after a fixed timer that might become offset following a restart or skipped lesson.
Choose a fallback for a failed update—for example, a neutral “Next lesson loading” message—rather than leaving the previous title on screen indefinitely. Also decide how the updater resynchronizes after an encoder or playback restart. These safeguards are practical implementation recommendations; YouTube’s cited overlay guidance does not prescribe them.
4. Add the overlay to the encoder

Add a browser-source layer using the local or hosted page that renders the title.

Set the source dimensions to the stream canvas, then place it above the lesson-video layer.

Confirm that the source can load the title data and that the graphic remains readable over the underlying video.
Exact menu labels vary by encoder. YouTube documents the browser-source approach, but the source page, data connection, and playlist integration depend on your own software.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.

In the encoder’s streaming settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and key, then connect the encoder.

Protect the key as a credential. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and its guidance on stream keys. The stream key allows YouTube to accept the encoder feed; it does not carry lesson-title updates by itself.
Preview lesson changes before going continuous
Use the Live Control Room preview to check the picture and title before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring encoder streams; the following transition checks are additional safeguards for a playlist-driven overlay.

Verify the displayed title against the lesson actually playing at the start and at each transition.

Check that long and short titles fit, remain legible, and stay inside safe margins.

Test a delayed or missing title update and confirm the fallback behaves as intended.

Restart playback and the encoder separately to see whether the title returns to the correct lesson.

Confirm who or what will detect a stalled encoder, broken overlay, or mismatch and how service will be restored.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance covers monitoring and stream issues. A 24/7 setup also needs an operational plan for playback, title updates, and recovery; an overlay alone does not keep the stream running.

The YouTube Live Streaming API represents an event as a liveBroadcast and its incoming audio/video feed as a liveStream. It can create and manage broadcasts, bind a stream to a broadcast, transition events, and monitor stream health. The cited API documentation does not describe rendering changing lesson titles into the video. Keep broadcast metadata management separate from the encoder-side graphic unless you have verified another tool that connects them.

For recurring scheduled events, Google documents binding one stream to multiple broadcasts. That can simplify recurring event setup, but it does not create lesson-level on-screen title changes: Google’s guide to using live broadcasts.
Choose who operates the continuous stream
A custom encoder and browser source give you control over the graphic and how it reads lesson data, but you are responsible for keeping the encoder, playback, title feed, and recovery process working. A cloud streaming service may move some of the continuous playback workload off a local computer. Compare options by checking whether they can read your playlist and update the title at the correct lesson boundary, support the overlay source you need, allow the visual customization you want, and provide a recovery process suitable for your workflow. Verify current terms and performance directly; the cited YouTube sources do not establish comparable prices or reliability figures for services.
