How to Add a Now-Playing Episode Label to a 24/7 Kids’ YouTube Stream

To show the episode currently playing inside a 24/7 YouTube stream, add the label to the video before it reaches YouTube. In OBS, place a Text source over the episode video and set it to read a plain-text file; your playout or scheduling system must update that file when the episode changes. OBS can display file-backed text, but it does not automatically connect a playlist’s current item to the label.

Choose how the label gets its episode title

The key requirement is a reliable source for the current episode name. OBS can render a title, but something in your workflow has to supply and update that title at each transition. The two practical display options are a file-backed Text source and a Browser source showing a webpage.

Approach What it does What you must provide
Text source reading a file Displays the text in a plain-text file. This is a straightforward option for a short, consistently styled label. A process that writes the correct episode title to the file and updates it when playback changes.
Browser source Displays a webpage or local page, allowing a more designed overlay. A webpage plus a dependable way for it to receive the current episode title. The cited OBS documentation does not identify a specific feed or automatic integration for a playout system.

OBS documents both file-backed text and browser sources; neither documentation page establishes an automatic link from a media playlist to the displayed title. Choose based on what metadata your playout system can expose and how much layout control you need. Before relying on either approach, test how quickly the label changes after an episode transition, what happens after a restart, how easily an operator can correct a wrong title, and whether the text remains readable on a phone-sized screen.

Set up a file-backed episode label in OBS

  1. Add the episode video or playlist. In the OBS scene used for the broadcast, add the video or playlist source that supplies the program picture. If using an OBS VLC Video source for a list of files, VLC must be installed for that source to appear. OBS documents that the VLC source can play a list, loop it, and keep items in listed order; it does not document sending the current item name to a text overlay. OBS Media Sources
  2. Create the title file. Make a plain-text file containing the episode title exactly as it should appear. Keep it to the title itself unless you intentionally want additional text on screen. Decide which process will replace or rewrite the file when the next episode begins. That metadata update is an external workflow you must arrange; it is not a built-in playlist-to-label feature established by OBS documentation.
  3. Add an OBS Text source. In the scene’s Sources list, add a Text source and enable Read from file, then select the plain-text file. OBS Text sources support rendering text from a file. OBS Text Sources
  4. Put the label in front of the program video. Move the Text source above the episode video source in the Sources list. OBS places sources higher in the list above lower sources, so the label is visible over the video. OBS Sources Guide
  5. Position and check the title. Place the label where it does not obscure important picture content. Preview a long title, a short title, and any characters used in your episode names. Check the scene at a small display size as well as in the OBS preview; a title that looks readable on a desktop can be difficult to read on a phone.
  6. Test an episode change before going live. Have the same process that will update the file change it to a second title. Confirm the new text appears, is not clipped, and remains correct after restarting the relevant playout or OBS components. If the label stays stale, the missing or failing part is usually the update workflow rather than the Text source itself.

Use a Browser source for a designed overlay

  1. Prepare the page that renders the label. The page may be hosted on the web or stored locally. It needs a dependable input for the current episode title; the OBS Browser source does not, by itself, know which playlist item is playing.
  2. Add the Browser source to the scene. Point it at the webpage or local file and size and position it over the program video. OBS Browser sources can display webpages and local files. OBS Browser Source
  3. Connect and test the metadata update. Arrange for your scheduling or playout system to provide the current title to the page, then test transitions, a page or OBS restart, and a manual correction. The sources establish the Browser source’s display capability, not a particular metadata feed, script, or integration.

A browser overlay makes sense when your page can receive the episode metadata reliably and you need its layout options. If the page cannot get a trustworthy current title, a more elaborate overlay will not solve the underlying metadata problem.

Send the composed scene to YouTube

  1. Make sure the channel can livestream. YouTube’s current live-streaming help says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also says first-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave channel eligibility until the intended launch. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and limits for the current rules.
  2. Get the encoder details from YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio, start or configure the intended live stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  3. Configure the encoder and start the feed. Enter the server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings, verify the scene preview includes both the program video and the episode label, then start streaming. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the server URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware; dedicated hardware is optional. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  4. Check the result on YouTube. Confirm that the public stream shows the label within the video. Updating the YouTube stream title or description is not a substitute: those are stream-page details, while the episode label must be part of the encoded picture.

YouTube’s help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee archiving for one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, so plan recording or archive needs separately if you need a complete record. The same page notes that first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube encoder setup

YouTube’s live-streaming help currently states limits of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; these operational limits can change, so check the live help page before configuring multiple concurrent outputs. YouTube live-streaming help

Account for the kids’ audience designation

YouTube’s Live Streaming API includes a made-for-kids status field. Apply the correct audience designation in YouTube Studio or through the API; do not infer from the presence of an episode label which chat, discovery, or monetization features will be available. Consult YouTube’s current audience-specific guidance for feature consequences. YouTube Live Streaming API reference

Troubleshoot a label that is missing, stale, or hard to read

  • No label appears: Confirm the Text or Browser source is enabled and visible in the active scene. For a Text source, check that Read from file is enabled and that it points to the intended file. For a Browser source, verify the page address or local file is correct.
  • The old episode title remains: Check whether the external process actually updated the file or page data. OBS’s documented file-reading capability does not itself determine when a playlist changes.
  • The title is behind the video: Move the label source above the episode video in the Sources list; higher sources appear in front of lower ones.
  • The title is clipped or obscures the picture: Adjust its position and size, then preview the longest episode name. Keep the label legible at small display sizes without covering essential program content.
  • The source fails after a restart: Test the full startup order, including OBS, the page or file, and the playout process. Verify the metadata source is reachable and has a valid title before playback continues.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the server URL and stream key copied from YouTube Studio, confirm the channel is eligible to livestream, and allow for activation time if this is the channel’s first live stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The episode label still needs a way to reflect the current title; StreamNeo’s described capabilities do not establish automatic playlist-title overlays, so arrange and verify the metadata workflow separately.
