To add optical-disc capability to a PS5 Pro, buy Sony’s separately sold detachable PS5 Disc Drive. It is the drive Sony designates for the PS5 Pro (the CFI-7000 model group). Installation is a clip-in job, but the console must be shut down, unplugged, cool, and placed on a protected flat surface. An internet connection is required once the console is powered back on so the drive can pair with it.
The drive supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, PS5 physical game discs, and supported PS4 physical games. It does not turn the PS5 Pro into a universal disc reader; use Sony’s stated format and game-compatibility qualifications.

Confirm that your console is the compatible PS5 Pro model
Sony identifies the PS5 Pro as part of the CFI-7000 model group. Sony’s installation guidance covers the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups, while the detachable PS5 Disc Drive product information specifically identifies PS5 Pro compatibility. Check the model marking on the console or its original packaging before buying an accessory.
The purchase must be the complete detachable PS5 Disc Drive intended for PS5 Pro, not a replacement shell, a stand, a decorative panel, or an older cover set. Sony lists a disc drive with its matching cover as compatible. Cover sets made for the older CFI-1000 or CFI-2000 Slim groups are not compatible with PS5 Pro, so do not try to substitute those parts.

The drive is sold separately. Sony’s compatibility information establishes which drive belongs on a PS5 Pro, but prices and retailer stock change by region and date; verify the current listing before ordering.
What to prepare before installation
- The detachable PS5 Disc Drive intended for PS5 Pro.
- The cover and long horizontal feet supplied with that drive.
- A flat, stable work surface covered with a soft, clean cloth.
- Enough time for the console to cool completely after use.
- An internet connection for the first setup and pairing.
No screwdriver is required for the clip-in installation described by Sony. Keep the console disconnected from power while the cover and drive are being handled. Before touching the drive, touch a metal-grounded object to discharge static electricity. Avoid touching the drive terminal or the matching terminal inside the console; contact with those connectors can damage them.
Install the PS5 Disc Drive on a PS5 Pro
Follow this sequence in order. The console should remain powered off and unplugged until the drive is physically secured.

- From the PS5 control center, choose Power and then Turn Off PS5.
- Wait until the power indicator is fully off. Do not start the installation while the indicator is still lit or blinking.
- Disconnect the AC power cord and every other cable connected to the console.
- Allow the console to cool before moving it. If it has just been used, give the exterior and surrounding area time to return to room temperature.
Turning the console off from the control center is preferable to removing power while it is running. Unplugging all cables also prevents a connected accessory from pulling on the console while you reposition it.
2. Position the console on a protected surface
- Spread the soft cloth over a flat surface.
- Place the PS5 Pro on the cloth with its bottom facing up and its front facing toward you.
- Make sure the console cannot slide as you remove the cover and feet.
A hard or gritty surface can scratch the exterior panels. Do not balance the console on an uneven edge or hold it in the air while pressing on the clips.
3. Remove the short feet and circle cover
- Remove the short horizontal feet currently fitted to the console and set them aside.
- Remove the circle cover, the panel that occupies the drive location on the disc-free PS5 Pro configuration.
- Put these original parts somewhere safe. They are needed if you later use the console without the drive attached.
Use steady, even pressure on the panel clips rather than twisting the cover. If a clip does not release, reposition the console on the cloth and try again; forcing a panel at an angle can damage the retaining points.
4. Align the drive with the console
- Hold the drive so its clips line up with the two marked holes on the PS5 Pro.
- Check that the drive is sitting squarely against the console before pressing down.
- Press firmly and evenly until the drive clicks into place.
The click indicates that the clips have engaged. If the drive rocks, sits high on one side, or will not click, remove it and realign the clips with the marked holes. Do not press harder on a misaligned drive, and do not touch the drive or console terminals while checking the fit.

- Take the circle cover supplied with the drive, not the original cover you removed in the previous step.
- Align the cover’s clips with the corresponding holes in the console.
- Press the cover down until its clips click into place.
- Attach the long horizontal feet supplied with the drive.
The cover and feet supplied for this installation are part of the fit. Do not combine the drive with an older PS5 panel or a different feet set, even if the pieces appear similar.

6. Reconnect the cables and power on
- Reconnect the AC power cord and the other cables you normally use.
- Place the console in its normal position with adequate ventilation.
- Turn on the PS5 Pro.
- Connect the console to the internet during the initial setup so the drive and console can pair.
Internet access is required for this first pairing. It is not enough for the drive to be physically attached; the console must complete its setup connection before the drive is ready for normal use.
7. Store the removed parts
Keep the original circle cover and short horizontal feet together with the drive’s packaging or another clearly labeled place. Sony says those parts are needed when the console is used without the drive attached. Losing them can make a later drive removal or storage change more difficult.
How the first pairing works
Pairing takes place after the drive is installed and the PS5 Pro is connected to the internet. Follow any on-screen setup prompt that appears after startup and allow the console to finish its connection process. Avoid unplugging the console during this stage.
If the drive is not recognized immediately, first confirm that the console is online and that the drive clicked fully into both marked mounting points. Power the console off normally, disconnect it, let it cool, and inspect the fit only after repeating the static-discharge precaution. A cover that is not seated correctly can also indicate that the drive or clips are misaligned.

Disc formats and games the drive supports
Sony describes the detachable drive as supporting the following media:

Sony’s compatibility statements do not establish support for every optical format that is not listed. In particular, do not infer support for audio CDs, recordable media, or other disc types solely because the drive accepts a disc physically. Check the specific media category before relying on it.

The drive will not click into place
- Confirm that the console is positioned bottom-up with the front facing you, as specified for installation.
- Check that the clips are aligned with the two marked holes before pressing.
- Remove the drive, discharge static electricity again, and inspect for an obstruction rather than applying extra force.
- Make sure you are not trying to fit a cover or accessory intended for another PS5 model group.
The cover will not sit flush
Use the circle cover supplied with the drive and align every clip with its matching hole. A cover that sits proud on one side usually means the drive or panel is not aligned. Remove the panel carefully, correct the alignment, and press again until the clips engage.

The console starts but the drive is not available
- Verify that the AC and other cables are fully reconnected.
- Confirm that the PS5 Pro has an active internet connection for initial pairing.
- Shut the console down from Power > Turn Off PS5, wait for the indicator to go dark, and restart it.
- If the issue remains, shut down and unplug again before checking that the drive is fully clipped into place.
Do not open or modify the drive. If the clips, terminals, or housing appear damaged, stop the installation and use Sony’s support process for the relevant hardware.

A disc does not play
First identify the disc type. The supported list covers 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, PS5 physical games, and supported PS4 physical games. A disc outside those categories may not be supported. For a listed type, remove and reinsert the disc, check for visible damage, and confirm that the console completed pairing. Persistent failure with multiple known-compatible discs points to a hardware or software issue rather than a format limitation.
Removing the drive later
If you decide to return the PS5 Pro to a disc-free configuration, shut it down from the control center, wait until the indicator is off, unplug every cable, and let the console cool. Work on the same soft cloth and use the static-discharge precaution before touching the drive. After removing the drive, refit the original circle cover and short feet that you stored during installation. The original parts are specifically retained for this configuration.
Keep the drive, its supplied cover, and its long feet together if you remove it temporarily. Mixing those pieces with covers from another PS5 model can create a fit problem the next time you reinstall it.
