In OBS, make a separate interstitial scene with a timer source, switch to it between videos, then switch back when the next video is due. YouTube’s broadcast settings manage the stream, but its documented live settings do not provide a feature that inserts a custom countdown between playlist videos.
Build the countdown in OBS
- Create an interstitial scene. In OBS, add a scene such as “Next match in…” and give it a background that suits the gaming rerun. Keep the video or game scene separate so the interstitial can cover the previous video completely.
- Add a timer source. Use a timer-capable text source, a browser source, or a pre-rendered countdown clip. A regular, static text source does not count down by itself. Choose a duration that fits the gap between videos.
- Set the scene order. The intended sequence is: current video ends, the countdown scene appears, and the next video begins. For a manually run rerun, switch scenes yourself. If you want the transition automated, use an automation method appropriate to how your playlist is built and rehearse it; the available documentation does not establish a particular end-of-file automation setup.
- Rehearse the whole gap. Test privately or with an unlisted stream. Confirm the timer resets for every gap, decide whether audio should be muted or intentionally carried across, and check that the next video starts at the intended point. These are practical checks, not a guarantee that any particular automation method will work with every playlist.
- Start the YouTube broadcast normally. Use the usual Live Control Room and encoder workflow. YouTube’s live settings include stream setup and the Gaming stream type, but do not document an option to insert a countdown between videos (YouTube: Manage live stream settings).
Choose the countdown style that fits your rerun
Manual scene switching
For a rerun you operate yourself, manual switching is the straightforward choice: move to the interstitial when a video ends, then return to the video scene when the countdown finishes. It gives you direct control but requires you to be present for each transition.
Automated scene switching
Automation can reduce hands-on switching, but its behavior depends on the media and playlist setup. Test the actual sequence—including the transition after a video ends and the timer reset—before relying on it for a live broadcast. An older OBS forum discussion recommends starting with an intro scene and then switching to the video scene; treat that as a basic scene-transition idea, not current documentation for a specific automated playlist configuration (OBS Project Forums, “Stream from media file to a scheduled YouTube stream”).
Live timer or pre-rendered countdown clip
A live timer source can be adjusted for different gaps, but it must actually update over time. A pre-rendered countdown clip has predictable playback, but its duration is fixed unless you change the media. Either can sit in the interstitial scene.

Dedicated scene or overlay
A dedicated scene gives you control over the entire interstitial: background, timer, and audio. An overlay placed on the video can preserve the current scene, but it may leave gameplay or the previous video visible behind the countdown. Use a full-screen scene if the prior video should disappear during the gap.
What the OBS Comp Delay countdown does—and does not do
The OBS Comp Delay project documents a text-source token, %delay_countdown%, that displays remaining seconds while a delay transition scene is active (OBS Comp Delay project documentation). Its documented purpose is filling a stream-delay buffer. It does not establish that the plugin detects the end of rerun videos or inserts a scheduled gap into a playlist. Treat it as a possible text-source and transition-scene pattern only when its delay function suits your setup; it is not a drop-in playlist countdown.

Do not confuse a visible countdown with stream latency
A countdown interstitial is part of the produced picture: viewers see a timer because OBS puts it in the scene or video. Stream latency and added broadcast delay affect when viewers receive the stream; changing them does not create a countdown graphic. YouTube’s HLS setup uses video segments and has higher latency than continuous RTMP, but that delivery difference is unrelated to inserting a timer between videos (YouTube: Set up an HLS stream; OBS Project Forums: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio).
Troubleshoot common countdown problems
- The timer stays on one number: You may have added a static text source. Replace it with a source that updates as a timer, a suitable browser source, or a countdown clip.
- The timer does not reset for the next gap: Check the timer source’s reset or playback behavior and rehearse two consecutive transitions. A single successful countdown does not confirm it will restart correctly.
- The previous video remains visible: The timer may be an overlay rather than a full-scene interstitial. Switch to a separate scene with an opaque background if you want to cover the video.
- Audio continues unexpectedly: Decide whether the interstitial should be silent or carry audio, then check the relevant sources and levels during rehearsal.
- The next video does not start at the right time: Verify the chosen manual or automated transition against the actual media sequence. The cited OBS materials do not confirm a universal end-of-file automation configuration.
- Viewers report a late countdown: Check stream delivery latency or added delay separately. Those settings affect when the broadcast arrives; they do not alter the countdown scene’s content.
