For a locally operated stream, add a dedicated countdown scene in OBS Studio and switch to it between story scenes. Use a non-looping countdown video as a Media Source for a fixed, repeatable break, or a Browser Source for a timer you can adjust more easily. Then rehearse the sequence before using it in a public 24/7 broadcast.
Build the countdown in OBS
- Create the scenes. In OBS Studio, create or identify a scene for each story, then add a separate scene named “Countdown.” A scene can hold the sources that make up one part of your broadcast. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Add a countdown video. In the Countdown scene, add a Media Source and select your countdown file. Leave Loop off and keep restart playback when source becomes active enabled so the clip starts at the beginning each time you switch to the scene. Choose the end behavior you want; a clean final frame makes the transition easier to manage. OBS documents Media Source playback, restart-on-activation, and options for what happens when playback ends. See OBS Media Sources.
- Or use a web-based timer. Add a Browser Source to the Countdown scene and enter a countdown page URL or the path to a local HTML page. Set the source dimensions to fit your stream canvas, then verify the page renders and counts down as intended. OBS Browser Source embeds a local page or URL. See OBS Browser Source.
- Place it between stories. Use OBS’s scene controls to switch from the current story to Countdown, then from Countdown to the next story. Choose Cut for an immediate change or Fade for a gradual transition; OBS documents both built-in transitions. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Rehearse the full sequence. Test the story-to-countdown-to-story sequence in a private or unlisted stream before going public. Check that the clip restarts on every activation, playback ends as expected, story audio does not overlap unintentionally, and no browser or desktop audio enters the broadcast by mistake.
Choose a countdown method
| Approach | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source countdown scene | A fixed-duration break that you want to sequence and brand alongside story scenes. | A prerecorded clip can restart when its source becomes active. Keep Loop off for a one-pass interstitial. OBS Media Sources. |
| OBS Browser Source countdown scene | A timer whose appearance or duration you want to change without exporting a new video file. | It embeds a local page or URL; size and test it in OBS before broadcasting. OBS Browser Source. |
| YouTube Premiere countdown | The opening of a single scheduled Premiere. | YouTube describes a countdown that begins at the scheduled Premiere start before the uploaded video plays; it is not documented as a repeatable break inside an already-running 24/7 stream. YouTube Premiere help. |
| Hosted continuous streaming | Creators who want prerecorded video to stream continuously without operating a local encoder. | YouTube’s encoder help lists cloud services for continuous prerecorded streams, including Gyre, but does not establish that those services can insert a countdown between each story. Check the chosen provider’s current documentation for that specific control. YouTube encoder help. |
Connect OBS to YouTube safely
For encoder-based streaming, YouTube’s instructions use the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in a screen recording, overlay, or public post. See YouTube’s encoder setup help and Manage live stream settings.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance does not establish uninterrupted reliability for longer broadcasts. YouTube also warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, so do not promise viewers they can pause and rewind to any earlier point in a 24/7 broadcast. See YouTube’s DVR help.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep prerecorded stories streaming without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops your uploaded videos from the cloud. This replaces operating a local encoder, but the available StreamNeo facts do not establish a feature for inserting a countdown between individual stories. Check whether the service’s current controls meet your interstitial needs before relying on it for that sequence.

Troubleshoot common countdown problems
- The countdown resumes partway through. Check that restart playback when source becomes active is enabled on the Media Source, and confirm that switching to the Countdown scene activates that source.
- The countdown repeats instead of ending. Turn off Loop on the Media Source if you want a single pass. Review the source’s end behavior to decide what should appear once the clip finishes.
- The web timer is cropped or blank. Check the Browser Source page or URL and adjust its width and height to the stream canvas. Test it in OBS before the live broadcast.
- Audio overlaps or leaks into the stream. Review the audio sources in the story and countdown scenes. Rehearse the transitions and confirm that browser or desktop audio is not being captured unintentionally.
- The interstitial is hard to follow. Check whether a Cut or Fade better suits the handoff, and preview the complete story order rather than testing the countdown scene alone.
