Add the clock and weather as a transparent web page in OBS Studio’s Browser Source. The page supplies the clock and weather; OBS displays it over your lofi scene. Set a location, timezone, and temperature unit, then preview the overlay and verify the YouTube broadcast separately.
What you need
- OBS Studio running the scene and encoder for your YouTube stream. OBS Browser Source is available in official packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- A transparent web page that renders a clock and requests weather data. You can use a local HTML file you control or a hosted page; OBS can load either.
- A weather location, its intended timezone, and a unit choice. A city label helps viewers understand which place the weather describes.
OBS is the renderer, not the source of the clock or weather behavior. A local page gives you control and avoids depending on an overlay provider; a hosted page is easier to update remotely but relies on the host and network connection. Build or choose the overlay page
Set the place, timezone, and units
Use coordinates in the weather request and show the place name on screen. Open-Meteo’s API supports latitude and longitude, current weather fields, Celsius or Fahrenheit, and a timezone parameter. Its timezone defaults to GMT; use an explicit timezone or its documented auto option to resolve one from coordinates. Open-Meteo API documentation

A compact display can show the local clock, temperature, and a short condition label. Wind is optional. Open-Meteo documents current fields including temperature, apparent temperature, weather code, precipitation, cloud cover, and wind. Its current conditions are based on 15-minute weather-model data, not necessarily an instantaneous reading from a local weather station. Label the information as current/model-based weather rather than implying a live sensor measurement.

Keep the page transparent and resilient
The overlay page should have a transparent background so the lofi art remains visible. OBS Browser Source’s documented default CSS sets a transparent background, removes page margins, and hides overflow. If the page fetches weather remotely, include a graceful failure state: for example, hide the weather value or show the time of its last successful update when a request fails. That fallback is an implementation choice, not an automatic OBS recovery feature.
Add the overlay in OBS Studio
- Open the scene used for the lofi broadcast. In the Sources panel, select + and add Browser (Browser Source).
- Choose Local file and browse to your HTML page, or enter the hosted page’s URL. OBS supports both modes.
- Set the source’s width and height to the overlay page’s designed viewport dimensions. Then place and scale the source in the preview so it does not obscure the artwork or compete with it.
- Check the Browser Source refresh controls. For an always-on scene, keep the source visible; review the options for unloading it when hidden and refreshing it when the scene becomes active. These controls exist, but they do not guarantee recovery from a failed page or long-run reliability.
- Preview the scene at a small size. Confirm that the intended city, timezone, and units are visible, the clock advances correctly, the weather loads, and the page remains transparent.
Design for a long-running lofi scene
- Keep text small but legible at phone size, with strong contrast against the art.
- Place the overlay away from YouTube player controls and avoid covering the focal point of the scene.
- Refresh weather data at a measured cadence. More frequent requests may make the display feel fresher, but the underlying current conditions are model data updated on a 15-minute basis, not a live sensor stream.
- Test both a successful weather response and a failed request before leaving the broadcast running unattended.
These are practical design recommendations, not results from a cited usability or reliability test.

Check the YouTube broadcast separately
The overlay only changes what OBS renders. YouTube treats the incoming audio/video stream and the viewer-facing broadcast as separate resources: a liveStream carries the feed, while a liveBroadcast is the video viewers watch. Google’s guide explicitly covers a 24/7 feed. A broadcast with no scheduled end time is treated by the API as continuing indefinitely, but that resource behavior is not a promise of uninterrupted operation. Use YouTube Studio or your encoder workflow to monitor stream health and broadcast state. Decide deliberately whether to enable archiving, DVR, automatic start and stop, and which latency setting fits the stream. The API documentation says DVR is enabled by default for a new broadcast; immediate archived playback after a broadcast requires both archive and DVR to be enabled. Ending a long-running broadcast affects the archive and may require a new broadcast resource or restart process.

Ultra-low latency has limits: YouTube’s API reference says it does not support closed captions or resolutions above 1080p. YouTube Studio labels and account eligibility can vary, so check the current options available to your channel rather than assuming a particular setup screen or eligibility state.
Weather API access and licensing
If you use Open-Meteo commercially, review its current access and licensing terms. Its API reference says an API key is required only for commercial use of reserved API resources; that does not mean every commercial use requires a key, nor does it establish that every usage is free.
