WordPress offers two different ways to add a checklist: place a visible checklist in the post with a List block, or turn on the editor’s Include pre-publish checklist prompt so authors review settings before publishing. Teams that need reusable templates and progress tracking can add an editorial-workflow plugin.
Choose the type of checklist you need

How to put a checklist inside a blog post
1. Open the post editor
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Posts → Add New, or open an existing post for editing.
- Click in the content area where the checklist should appear.
WordPress documents both routes to the block editor in its Block Editor guide.
2. Insert a List block
Add a List block using any of these methods:
- Click the top toolbar’s block inserter (+).
- Click the inline + control beside the paragraph area.
- Type
/listin the content area and choose the List block from the slash-search results.

3. Enter one check item per line
Type a requirement, then press Enter to create the next list item. For example:
- Confirm the headline is accurate.
- Set the featured image.
- Choose a category and relevant tags.
- Check the permalink.
- Preview the post on desktop and mobile.
Use the List block’s toolbar controls if you need a numbered list instead of bullets or want to indent nested items. This checklist is ordinary post content, so visitors will see it when the post is published.

4. Reuse a checklist layout
If you want a starting layout for multiple posts, save or insert a block pattern. WordPress distinguishes reusable Patterns from workflow tracking: an unsynced pattern supplies a copy that each post can edit independently. Patterns help repeat content structure, but they do not record whether each editorial task is complete. Read Work with blocks for the current pattern terminology and behavior.
How to turn on WordPress’s pre-publish checklist
1. Open Preferences
- Open a post in the block editor.
- Open the editor’s options menu and choose Preferences.
- Select Publishing.
WordPress documents these settings in its Preferences overview.

2. Enable the review prompt
Turn on Include pre-publish checklist. This setting does not insert a list into your article. Instead, when you click Publish, WordPress adds a review step before the final publication action.
3. Review and publish
Click Publish again when you are ready. The pre-publish screen asks you to review publication details such as:

- When the post will be published (publish date).
- Categories and tags, which you can add or change before completing publication.
Make any required changes on that screen, then select Publish again. The exact wording or location of controls may vary with the WordPress release and site configuration.

Its listing also says the pre-publish warning is non-blocking: an incomplete item can warn the author, but the plugin does not itself guarantee that WordPress will refuse publication. It supports the block editor and does not work with the Classic Editor. Install and configure it only after confirming that its current compatibility and settings match your site.
Final checks before publishing
Whether your checklist is visible in the article or part of the publishing workflow, inspect the post’s settings sidebar and preview before you publish:
- Featured image is present and appropriate.
- Category and tags are assigned correctly.
- Permalink (URL slug) is readable and intentional.
- Visibility and publication date are correct.
- Preview matches the intended desktop and mobile presentation.
The WordPress blocks guide notes that these post and page options may appear in the settings sidebar. A visible List block checks content for readers; the pre-publish preference checks key publication settings; a workflow plugin adds reusable team process features.
