Choose based on how quickly a volunteer can update it during the service, whether it must scroll, whether anyone expects it to follow speech automatically, readability on phones, handoff between operators, compatibility with your OBS installation, and permission to display the selected translation. Make a manually updated ticker with an OBS Text source
1. Prepare a text file
Create a plain text file containing the verse, passage, or reference you want displayed. Keep the text concise enough to read at the intended size. Store the file somewhere the OBS computer can access during the broadcast, and make sure the volunteer responsible for updates knows where it is.
2. Add the source to the program scene
- In OBS, select the scene used for the church’s program output.
- In the Sources box, add a Text source. The exact source label may vary by operating system and OBS version.
- Open the source’s properties and enable Read from file, then choose the text file you prepared.
- Adjust the source’s font, size, color, and other available text settings to suit the video. Confirm the text is legible against the background.
- Position and size the source in the preview. Keep it clear of faces, captions, and other essential content.

3. Assign an update role and test the handoff
Decide who edits the file and when—for example, before each reading or at a planned transition. Test an edit during rehearsal so the operator can confirm the displayed text changes as expected on the installed OBS setup. A file-backed Text source is a display method, not speech recognition or automatic Bible lookup.
Use a Browser source for a designed or scrolling ticker
A Browser source is an embedded browser in OBS. It can load a local HTML page or a URL, and its properties include viewport width and height. That makes it a flexible option for a web-designed ticker, but the page or overlay determines the actual controls and behavior.

- Prepare the local webpage or overlay URL you intend to use. If it is an external overlay, check its access, privacy, and ongoing availability arrangements.
- In the OBS scene used for the program output, add a Browser source.
- In the source properties, enter the local file or URL and set the viewport dimensions to fit the intended ticker area.
- Position and size the source in the scene, then preview it at the full program frame size. Check scrolling speed, contrast, text size, and clipping before the service.
The Browser source supports web-based layouts, but there is no single set of ticker settings that applies to every page or overlay. Check the controls provided by the implementation you choose. OBS Browser Source documentation
Consider a purpose-built Bible overlay
PrimeBible for OBS is a software project whose documentation describes a browser-source control panel and ticker-related controls. It is not required for a ticker. Check translation permissions before broadcasting text
Identify the Bible translation and check its publisher’s current terms for your planned online use, including the amount of text, attribution, geography, and monetization. Permission for a printed bulletin or in-person projection should not be assumed to cover a public online stream. These pointers are not a legal determination; ask the rights holder for permission if your use falls outside its stated conditions.
- ESV: Crossway publishes quotation conditions and acknowledgment requirements. Review the current ESV permissions terms.
- NIV: Biblica explains that the NIV is copyrighted and sets out limited quotation and attribution conditions. Review its current permissions terms.
Make sure the ticker is in the YouTube program output
The ticker is composed into the video by OBS. Add it to the scene that is actually sent to YouTube, rather than a scene used only for a local preview. YouTube’s basic encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key, with the encoder started to send the stream. Preserve your church’s existing continuous-broadcast workflow and verify the outgoing OBS scene includes the ticker. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive guidance is not a guarantee that a continuous stream will remain connected indefinitely. Preview and troubleshoot before the service
- The ticker does not appear: Confirm the source is enabled and visible, is in the correct scene, and is not covered by another source. For a Text source, check that Read from file points to the intended file.
- The text is stale after an edit: Check that the volunteer edited the file the source actually uses and that the file was saved. Recheck the source properties and test an update in rehearsal; do not rely on an unverified live change.
- The ticker is cut off or too small: Reposition or resize the source in the scene and, for a Browser source, review its viewport dimensions. Preview the entire frame at the output size, not only a close-up of the source.
- The text is hard to read: Increase its size or contrast and choose a position that does not compete with faces or essential content. Check the result at the scale viewers are likely to see.
- A Browser source is blank or behaves unexpectedly: Confirm its local file or URL and viewport settings, then verify the page or overlay itself works. The source’s behavior depends on the loaded implementation.
- The ticker appears in OBS but not in the YouTube stream: Verify that the scene containing the source is the one being sent to YouTube and follow the church’s established encoder and stream-key workflow.
