How to add a Bee Network travel card to Apple Wallet

To add a Bee Network travel card on an iPhone, open Wallet, tap +, choose Travel Card, select Bee Card, tap Continue, and buy an eligible ticket. The purchase creates a separate digital Bee Card in Apple Wallet; it does not transfer a physical Bee Card.

You can set up the same type of Wallet Bee Card directly on a compatible Apple Watch. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) currently lists iPhone SE (2nd generation) or iPhone 11 and later with iOS 27 or later, and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) or Apple Watch Series 8 and later with watchOS 27 or later. TfGM’s requirements and ticket catalogue can change, so check its current guidance if your device does not offer the setup option.

What you need before starting

The Wallet version of a Bee Card is a digital travel card that holds purchased Bee Network tickets. It is separate from both a plastic Bee Card and an ordinary bank card used through Apple Pay.

  • For iPhone: TfGM lists iPhone SE (2nd generation) or iPhone 11 and later, running iOS 27 or later.
  • For Apple Watch: TfGM lists Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) or Apple Watch Series 8 and later, running watchOS 27 or later.
  • For setup: you need an Apple device with Wallet available and a payment method accepted by the purchase flow.
  • For the ticket: choose one of the Bee Network products offered in Wallet. A Wallet Bee Card cannot be loaded with cash value.

These model and software requirements reflect TfGM’s guidance checked on 13 October 2026. They are not permanent hardware guarantees: an operating-system update, a change to TfGM’s Wallet support, or a regional service change can alter what appears on your device.

Apple iPhone 11, 64GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.

A physical Bee Card cannot be imported

TfGM says an existing physical Bee Card cannot be added to Apple Wallet. The digital card created in Wallet is a new Bee Card, and its tickets must be purchased there. If you already have a plastic card with a season ticket or stored product, keep using that card or use another TfGM-supported payment option rather than expecting its balance or ticket to appear in Wallet.

One Wallet Bee Card can hold multiple tickets

TfGM says you can purchase more than one ticket on a single Wallet Bee Card. That does not mean the card contains cash credit: Wallet supports the listed ticket products, not a top-up balance.

  1. Open the Wallet app on the iPhone.
  2. Tap the + button to add a card.
  3. Choose Travel Card.
  4. Select Bee Card. Wallet may let you find it by searching for the card name or by location.
  5. Tap Continue.
  6. Choose the Bee Network ticket you want to buy.
  7. Follow the onscreen purchase and confirmation steps. When the transaction finishes, the ticket is added to the Bee Card in Wallet.

The first purchase is part of the setup: TfGM’s process creates the Wallet Bee Card as you select and buy a ticket. You are not merely registering a pre-existing card number.

What success looks like

After completion, open Wallet and select the Bee Card to view the stored ticket. Before travelling, check that the product you bought is the one you intended—for example, a bus-only ticket versus a bus-and-tram ticket, or a seven-day ticket versus a one-day ticket.

Add a Bee Card on an Apple Watch

You can create the card on the watch without first adding it on the iPhone.

  1. Open Wallet on the Apple Watch.
  2. Tap the three-dot button.
  3. Tap Add Card, then choose Travel Card.
  4. Select Bee Card.
  5. Tap Continue.
  6. Choose an eligible ticket and follow the prompts to complete the purchase and add it.

If you already have a Wallet Bee Card on an iPhone, TfGM says it can be moved between the iPhone and Apple Watch using the Watch app and the authentication prompts shown during the transfer. Treat the destination device as the one you will present to readers: the ticket must be available on that device when you travel.

Which Bee Network tickets are available in Wallet?

TfGM’s Wallet instructions list the following products. Names describe the ticket’s scope; the exact validity end is shown with the ticket in Wallet.

Ticket shown by TfGM What the name indicates Important qualification
1-day Bee Bus Bus travel for one day Check the displayed expiry in Wallet.
1-day Bee Bus Family – off-peak Family bus ticket restricted to off-peak use Confirm the off-peak conditions shown at purchase.
7-day Bee Bus Bus travel for seven days Validity is tied to the product’s displayed dates.
Weekend Tram – all zones Tram travel across all zones for the weekend product period Check the exact start and expiry information.
7-day Tram – all zones Tram travel across all zones for seven days Use tram tap-in and tap-out procedures.
Weekend Tram Family – all zones Family tram travel across all zones for the weekend product period Check the product conditions before buying.
1-day Bus + Tram – all zones Bus and tram travel across all zones for one day Tap out when leaving a tram platform.
7-day Bus + Tram – all zones Bus and tram travel across all zones for seven days Tap out when leaving a tram platform.

TfGM says a Wallet ticket expires at the end of service, 3:59 a.m. on the expiry date shown. If your journey continues after that time, renew the ticket or buy another valid product. Do not infer validity from the calendar date alone; use the expiry information displayed for your ticket.

How to use the Wallet Bee Card on buses and trams

Bus boarding

Hold the top of the iPhone or the Apple Watch display near the bus reader. Wait for the device to show a checkmark and “Done”, and for the reader to accept the tap. Present the same device that contains the ticket.

Tram entry and exit

For a tram journey, tap the iPhone or Apple Watch at the platform reader before boarding and tap out when leaving the platform. A ticket being stored in Wallet does not remove the need to follow the tram reader procedure.

Keep other cards away from the reader

Keep physical bank cards and other contactless cards separate from the phone or watch while tapping. A card left next to the device can be read at the same time or cause an unintended selection.

Express Mode: why Face ID may not appear

TfGM says the first Bee Card added to Apple Wallet has Express Mode enabled by default. With Express Mode, you do not normally need to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID for each tap.

If the Wallet contains both a valid Bee ticket and a payment card, TfGM says the reader selects the Bee Card first. That is useful when you intend to use the prepaid ticket, but it can surprise you if you meant to pay by ordinary contactless Apple Pay.

Use contactless payment instead of the Bee ticket

To make a bank card the express card, TfGM instructs you to enable Express Mode on the preferred payment card and disable it on the Bee Card. The exact card-management labels can vary with Apple’s software, so use the Wallet card settings shown on your device and confirm which card is marked for Express Mode before travelling.

Express Mode changes which Wallet card is presented; it does not convert a Bee ticket into contactless pay-as-you-go travel. If the reader repeatedly selects the wrong method, review the Express Mode setting and remove physical cards from the immediate area of the reader.

Bee Wallet tickets versus Apple Pay contactless

Both methods use an Apple device at a reader, but they are different products with different fare rules.

Point of comparison Bee Card in Apple Wallet Contactless Apple Pay
What you use A Bee Card in Wallet containing a purchased Bee Network ticket. A bank card or its device token in Apple Pay.
When you pay You buy an eligible ticket in advance or before travel through the Wallet purchase flow. The journey is charged through the contactless payment method.
Cash value TfGM says cash value cannot be added to the Wallet Bee Card. Not a Bee Card balance; it is payment by the selected bank card.
Bus use Tap the device containing the valid Bee ticket when boarding. Tap the same contactless card or device when boarding.
Tram use Tap in and tap out with the device containing the ticket. Tap in and tap out with the same contactless card or device.
Fare capping The Wallet ticket is the product you purchased; do not assume contactless capping applies to it. TfGM says daily or weekly capping depends on consistently using the same card or device for all journeys.

For contactless travel, TfGM says bus users tap once when boarding, while tram users tap in and out. Use the same physical card, phone, or watch throughout the relevant journeys if you want contactless daily or weekly fare capping to be calculated correctly.

Do not tap with a Bee ticket for one leg and a bank card for another while expecting the systems to combine them. Decide whether you are using a pre-purchased Bee product or contactless pay-as-you-go, then present the corresponding Wallet card consistently.

What to do if setup or tapping does not work

The Bee Card option is missing

  • Check that the iPhone or Apple Watch model meets TfGM’s currently listed requirements.
  • Check that the operating system meets the listed iOS 27 or watchOS 27 minimum.
  • Confirm that you entered the Travel Card section rather than the ordinary payment-card flow.
  • Check TfGM’s current guidance, because supported models, software and ticket availability can change.

You expected your plastic card to appear

That is not supported. TfGM says a physical Bee Card cannot be transferred into Wallet. Add a new Bee Card through the Travel Card flow and purchase a Wallet ticket, or continue using the physical card separately.

Apple iPhone 12, 64GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

The purchase did not finish

Return to Wallet and check whether the Bee Card or ticket appears before trying again. If no ticket is shown, repeat the Travel Card purchase flow and follow every confirmation prompt. Avoid assuming that a failed or interrupted screen created a valid ticket; verify the card in Wallet before approaching a reader.

The reader rejects the tap

  • Hold the top of the iPhone or the Apple Watch display close to the reader and wait for the checkmark and “Done” confirmation.
  • Open Wallet first and confirm that the intended Bee ticket is present and has not reached its 3:59 a.m. end-of-service expiry.
  • Make sure you are presenting the device that contains the ticket.
  • Separate physical bank cards from the device.
  • Review Express Mode if a payment card is being selected instead of the Bee Card.
  • On a tram, make sure you tapped in at entry and tap out at exit.

The wrong card is selected

If a bank card is presented when you intended to use the Bee ticket, check which Wallet card has Express Mode enabled. TfGM’s guidance says to enable Express on the preferred payment card and disable it on the Bee Card when you want ordinary contactless payment. Reverse that arrangement when you want the Bee ticket selected, and keep other cards away from the reader.

The ticket appears to have expired

Read the expiry shown in Wallet. TfGM defines the end of service as 3:59 a.m. on the displayed expiry date. After that time, buy or renew a valid ticket before travelling rather than relying on the previous day’s label.

Moving the Bee Card between iPhone and Apple Watch

TfGM says a Wallet Bee Card can be moved between an iPhone and Apple Watch using the Watch app and authentication prompts. Because the card is moved rather than duplicated, check the destination device before leaving and use that device at readers. If the card is no longer visible on the original device, that can be the expected result of a transfer rather than evidence that the ticket was deleted.

Other ways to pay for Bee Network travel

Apple Wallet is one option, not the only one. TfGM also lists the Bee Network app, smart cards, cash and card payments as ticket or payment routes. Choose the method that matches how you want to travel:

  • Wallet Bee Card: buy one of the listed bus, tram or combined tickets and present an iPhone or Apple Watch.
  • Contactless card or device: pay as you travel, using the same card or device consistently when relying on fare capping.
  • Bee Network app: use TfGM’s app-based ticket option where the required product is available.
  • Smart card or cash: use a TfGM-supported alternative if you do not have a compatible Apple device.

TfGM’s visitor guidance specifically tells Apple-device users that bus and tram tickets can be bought in Apple Wallet. It also recommends consistent use of one contactless card or device for tap-and-go journeys.

Practical checklist before your first journey

  1. Confirm the device model and iOS or watchOS version meet TfGM’s current requirements.
  2. Open Wallet and verify that a Bee Card exists.
  3. Open the Bee Card and check the ticket type, zones, family or off-peak conditions, and expiry.
  4. Decide whether you are using the prepaid Bee ticket or contactless Apple Pay.
  5. Check Express Mode so the intended Wallet card is selected.
  6. Keep physical bank cards away from the phone or watch while tapping.
  7. For a bus, tap when boarding and wait for the checkmark and “Done”.
  8. For a tram, tap in and tap out with the same device.

The essential distinction

The reliable setup path is Wallet → + → Travel Card → Bee Card → Continue → choose a ticket. That process creates a new digital Bee Card and stores the purchased ticket in it. It does not import a physical card, it does not add cash value, and it is not the same as paying each journey with a bank card through Apple Pay. Check the ticket and expiry in Wallet, use the correct Express Mode card, and follow the required bus or tram tapping procedure.
