Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To repeat backup tracks in OBS, add them as a playlist in a VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. This repeats the tracks, but it does not by itself detect a failed main audio feed or switch to the backup. Set up and test source switching separately if you need automatic failover.
First, identify what kind of backup you need
“Backup” can mean either alternate audio content or a second route for sending a stream to YouTube. They solve different problems.

- Backup audio playlist: A set of local audio files that OBS can play. A looping playlist repeats its contents; it does not establish automatic switching when another audio source fails.
- YouTube backup ingestion: A second ingest endpoint for an encoder. YouTube’s HLS instructions include a Backup server URL for this purpose. It is not a playlist of backup songs.
Add and loop a playlist in OBS
1. Prepare the audio files
Put the fallback tracks in a folder the streaming computer can access, and play them once to confirm the files work. Decide the order in which they should play.

3. Create the VLC playlist source
- In OBS, open the scene that will be sent to YouTube.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video Source.
- Add the audio files to the source’s playlist in the intended order.
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart the list after its last item. Leave shuffle off if the track order matters.
For a single file rather than a sequence, OBS’s regular Media Source has a Loop setting. VLC Video Source is the more direct choice for a multi-file playlist.
4. Check the scene and audio
Make sure the VLC source is active in the scene being streamed and that OBS’s audio meter moves while a track plays. Make a test recording or use a private or unlisted stream to confirm the audio is present in the output.

5. Connect OBS to YouTube
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and get its stream URL and stream key. Enter those details in the encoder’s stream settings, then start the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this connection. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
6. Test both the loop and any failover
Watch the playlist’s last item transition to its first item. If the goal is for backup audio to take over when the main feed fails, test that behavior separately using a configured source-switching mechanism. OBS’s Loop Playlist setting confirms repeat playback; it does not promise failure detection or automatic source switching.

- Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer
If you mean a backup YouTube ingest URL
YouTube’s HLS setup instructions describe copying a Backup server URL when a backup ingestion path is needed. That is encoder-to-YouTube redundancy, not alternate audio content. YouTube specifies HLS settings including 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. These are HLS-specific instructions, not settings to apply to a standard OBS RTMP playlist setup. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
Choose the method that matches the failure you want to prevent
| Need | Approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local audio file | OBS Media Source with Loop enabled | Plays one file, not an ordered playlist. OBS documentation. |
| Repeat several local tracks | OBS VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist enabled | Requires VLC installed with an architecture matching OBS. OBS documentation. |
| Switch automatically when the main audio source fails | Configure and test a separate source-switching mechanism | Playlist looping alone does not provide or establish failure-triggered switching. |
| Provide a second YouTube ingest path | YouTube HLS Backup server URL with an HLS-capable encoder | Ingestion redundancy, not backup songs; HLS has its own protocol settings and higher latency than RTMP. YouTube HLS guide. |
| Keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without operating a local encoder continuously | Use a cloud streaming service | Check the service’s current features and terms before choosing it. |
Check rights and YouTube rules for every track
A technically working playlist does not grant permission to broadcast its music. Use tracks you created, licensed for the intended livestream, or are otherwise authorized to use; confirm that the license covers continuous or repeated streaming where relevant. YouTube’s encoder setup page explains connecting a stream, not whether particular music is cleared. A stream may still face copyright claims or restrictions even when the playlist and encoder are configured correctly.

Troubleshooting
- The VLC Video Source is missing or will not load: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist plays once and stops: Open the VLC Video Source settings and enable Loop Playlist. For a single Media Source, enable its separate Loop option.
- Tracks play in an unexpected order: Check the playlist order and leave shuffle off if you need a fixed sequence.
- The source plays, but the stream has no audio: Verify the source is active in the live scene, check the OBS audio meter, and make a test recording or private/unlisted stream to inspect the output.
- The backup playlist does not take over when the main feed drops: Looping only repeats the playlist. Configure and test source switching separately; do not assume the loop control detects another source’s failure.
- YouTube does not connect: Recheck the stream URL and key entered in the encoder’s stream settings. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- You expected the HLS backup URL to play alternate songs: It is a second ingest endpoint, not an audio playlist. Use a local playlist source for alternate tracks.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your aim is continuous playback of uploaded videos on YouTube without keeping a computer or OBS running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps looping when your computer is off and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot has one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; the first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not switch a live camera or automatically replace one audio input with another.
