How to Add a 3.5 mm Headphone Jack to a Phone Without a USB-C Dongle

Short answer: you generally cannot add a working 3.5 mm socket to a USB-C phone externally without using an attachment on the USB-C port. USB-C headphones and Bluetooth headphones let you listen without carrying a USB-C-to-3.5 mm dongle, but neither adds a physical jack. A built-in jack would require a phone-specific internal hardware modification, and there is no safe, universal procedure for doing that.

What is and is not possible

A 3.5 mm headphone jack is not just a hole connected to a pair of wires. Inside a phone, the socket is connected to an audio codec, switching and detection contacts, microphone circuits, button-event circuitry, grounding, and the phone’s main board. The phone’s firmware must also know how to route audio when a plug is inserted. A USB-C port does not automatically expose those connections in a place where you can add a socket.

That is why a small external accessory cannot create a permanent jack in the phone’s chassis while leaving the USB-C port unused. A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter contains the digital-to-analog conversion and the jack itself; it relocates the socket to the adapter rather than installing one in the phone.

Android’s USB-C audio guidance is explicit: “Only digital-to-analog adapters are allowed.” In practice, the phone sends digital audio over USB, and a DAC in the adapter converts it to the analog signal required by conventional headphones. Some Galaxy phones likewise require an adapter with a built-in DAC. A passive cable that merely rewires USB-C pins to a 3.5 mm plug may not work.

For the exact requirement in the title, there are therefore two different goals:

  • Listen without carrying a USB-C-to-3.5 mm dongle: use USB-C headphones or Bluetooth.
  • Install a socket in the phone body: obtain a model-specific engineering or repair assessment; do not expect a universal kit or procedure.

Choose the solution by the constraint you actually have

Your priority Practical solution What you give up
No separate accessory on the phone USB-C headphones, if the phone supports USB audio Your existing 3.5 mm headphones need a different connection or a separate adapter.
No cable at all Bluetooth headphones or earbuds Bluetooth requires pairing, battery power and a wireless audio link; it does not provide a jack.
Keep existing 3.5 mm headphones A USB-C-to-3.5 mm digital-audio adapter with a DAC The adapter occupies the USB-C port and remains an external attachment.
Charge while using wired 3.5 mm headphones A USB-C audio adapter with charging passthrough It is still a dongle, and availability and compatibility vary.
A socket permanently built into the phone Phone-specific feasibility check with the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider Possible board redesign, machining, soldering, firmware limitations, water-resistance loss and uncertain cost.

Phone model and country matter. USB-C is a connector standard, not a guarantee that every phone supports USB audio, every headset feature, or every charging-and-audio accessory. Check the exact model’s manual and support information before buying anything.

Option 1: use USB-C headphones

USB-C headphones are the closest substitute when the real problem is carrying a dongle. They contain a USB audio interface, and many models include their own digital-to-analog converter. You plug them directly into the phone’s USB-C port, so no separate USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter is attached.

Check support before buying

  • Confirm that the phone supports USB audio accessories, not merely USB charging and data.
  • Look for a headset that identifies as a standard USB Audio Class device. A proprietary headset may need a particular app or phone ecosystem.
  • Verify microphone and inline-button support if calls, voice recording or playback controls matter.
  • Check whether the phone’s case leaves enough clearance around the USB-C connector.
  • Remember that the port is occupied while listening, so simultaneous wired charging normally requires a separate hub or a different connection method.

Connect and test them

  1. Unlock the phone and insert the USB-C headset fully.
  2. Wait for the USB-device or audio-route notification, if the phone displays one.
  3. Play a locally stored track or a system notification sound and raise the volume gradually.
  4. Make a short voice-recording or test call to confirm the headset microphone is selected.
  5. Press the inline buttons and check that play, pause and volume events are recognized.

If the phone continues playing through its speaker, remove and reconnect the headset, restart the phone and test it without a case. If another USB accessory is connected, disconnect it while testing. A headset that works on a computer can still be incompatible with a particular phone’s USB-audio implementation.

Option 2: use Bluetooth audio

Bluetooth avoids both a USB-C dongle and a cable. Pair the headphones in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the device for media audio, and keep its battery charged. This is a listening solution, not a way to make a 3.5 mm plug fit the phone.

Pairing steps

  1. Charge the headphones and place them in pairing mode according to their instructions.
  2. Open Settings and choose Connected devices, Connections or the phone’s equivalent Bluetooth menu.
  3. Turn Bluetooth on, select the headphones from the available-device list and confirm the pairing request.
  4. Open the device details and ensure Media audio is enabled. Enable Phone calls if you want to use the headset microphone.
  5. Play audio, adjust the phone and headphone volume separately, and test a call before relying on the setup.

Trade-offs to consider

  • Headphones and the phone must both have charge.
  • Wireless audio can introduce delay in games or video, depending on the codec and device implementation.
  • Microphone quality and button behavior vary more between Bluetooth models than between ordinary wired headphones.
  • Pairing records can become confusing if several nearby devices have similar names; rename the headphones in Bluetooth settings if necessary.
  • Bluetooth does not provide analog output for a 3.5 mm cable. If you later plug wired headphones into a Bluetooth receiver, the receiver itself becomes the external adapter.

If you must keep your existing 3.5 mm headphones

The documented, generally supported method is a USB-C-to-3.5 mm digital-audio adapter. This conflicts with the “without a USB-C dongle” requirement, but it is important to distinguish a working adapter from a passive cable that may never produce sound.

What the adapter must do

The adapter needs a DAC and must advertise itself as a USB audio device that the phone supports. Android’s guidance describes adapter functions such as stereo output, microphone input, headset detection and headset-button events. Samsung’s support guidance warns that some Galaxy models need a DAC-equipped adapter.

Feature to compare Why it matters How to verify
Digital-audio/DAC support Converts the phone’s USB digital stream into analog audio for the 3.5 mm plug. Look for explicit DAC or digital-audio support and compatibility with the exact phone model.
Microphone input Determines whether a headset microphone works for calls and recording. Check the specification for TRRS headset-mic support, then test a call.
Inline controls Controls may rely on headset-button events recognized by the adapter and phone. Confirm supported button functions rather than assuming every button will work.
Charging passthrough Allows power and audio at the same time when the phone has only one USB-C port. Check the supported charging standard, power limits and whether audio remains stable while charging.
Physical clearance A thick plug or case opening can prevent a reliable connection. Measure the connector and test with the phone case installed.

Why a passive USB-C cable often fails

USB-C can carry digital USB audio, while a 3.5 mm headset expects an analog signal. The phone must either contain circuitry that presents analog audio on specific USB-C pins or use an external DAC. Phones that follow the digital-audio adapter model will reject or ignore a passive accessory. The presence of a USB-C connector alone does not tell you which behavior your phone implements.

Charging and listening at the same time

Some combined adapters expose a 3.5 mm output while leaving a USB-C port available for charging. They can be useful when the phone has no headphone jack and battery charging cannot wait, but they remain an external attachment and therefore do not satisfy the title’s built-in-jack requirement. Product availability changes; one cited combined-adapter listing was marked sold out when checked.

Before using a charging-and-audio adapter, check whether it supports the phone’s charging protocol, the charger wattage you need, microphone and button functions, and data access. Cheap splitters may charge slowly, interrupt audio when a charger is connected, or expose only power rather than USB data. Test the complete combination—phone, case, charger, headphones and adapter—before depending on it for travel or work.

Can an internal retrofit add the jack?

Only a phone-specific hardware project could create a true built-in socket. A technician would need to establish that the motherboard has an unused audio path or a compatible codec, identify safe mounting space, route the left, right, ground and microphone contacts, implement plug detection, and modify or preserve the required shielding and antennas. The chassis would also need to be cut or replaced without damaging the battery, display, buttons or seals.

Even if the electrical connections could be identified, the phone’s software may not detect a newly added jack. Water resistance, warranty coverage, mechanical strength and electromagnetic noise could all be affected. A successful modification on one model says nothing about a different model, even within the same product family.

What is not a consumer retrofit kit

Semiconductor modules marketed for converting headsets to USB-C are components for original-equipment manufacturers. They are not drop-in phone-repair boards and do not provide a documented method for adding a socket to a finished phone. Treating an OEM audio module as a universal retrofit kit risks short circuits, battery damage and an unusable handset.

How to investigate a specific phone safely

  1. Write down the exact model identifier, regional variant and board revision; “USB-C phone” is not enough.
  2. Ask the manufacturer whether the model was sold in another configuration with a 3.5 mm jack and whether the main board, frame and firmware differ.
  3. Ask a qualified repair provider for a written feasibility assessment that covers parts, labor, charging, microphone support, plug detection, water resistance and warranty.
  4. Require a documented backup and data-loss plan before any invasive work.
  5. Do not open the phone merely to experiment. Lithium batteries, display cables and antenna assemblies can be damaged by a single incorrect tool or screw.

If the manufacturer and a reputable repair provider cannot confirm a supported design, assume the retrofit is impractical. Buying a phone model that includes a factory 3.5 mm jack is usually the only way to obtain a socket with the original mechanical and software integration.

A compatibility checklist before spending money

  • Exact phone model: record the model number and region, not just the brand or series name.
  • Audio path: determine whether the phone supports USB Audio Class devices and whether its documentation requires a DAC adapter.
  • Headphone type: separate ordinary stereo headphones from TRRS headsets with microphones and from headsets with special controls.
  • Charging need: decide whether you need simultaneous charging; this changes the adapter design you would have to evaluate.
  • Case and port fit: confirm that the connector seats fully and does not put sideways force on the USB-C socket.
  • Return policy: buy only where an incompatible adapter or headset can be returned after a careful test.
  • Software updates: test again after a major phone update if audio routing or buttons suddenly stop working.

Troubleshooting by symptom

No sound from USB-C headphones

  • Reconnect the headset with the phone unlocked and verify the USB-device notification.
  • Test another USB-C audio headset to separate a phone problem from a faulty headset.
  • Remove the case and inspect the port for lint; do not scrape the contacts with metal.
  • Check the phone’s USB preferences and media-output picker, then restart the phone.
  • Confirm that the headset is not a proprietary accessory requiring an app or special mode.

Sound works but the microphone or buttons do not

  • Check whether the headset has a four-contact TRRS plug and whether the adapter or USB headset lists microphone support.
  • Test a recorder and a phone call separately; some apps select their own microphone.
  • Verify that call and media permissions are enabled and that the output device is selected during the call.
  • Assume some inline controls are unsupported if the specification does not promise headset-button events.

A 3.5 mm adapter is detected but silent

  • Check that it contains a DAC and is described as a digital-audio adapter, not a passive analog cable.
  • Try the adapter without a charger, hub or extension cable.
  • Test another known-compatible adapter and confirm the phone model’s manufacturer guidance.
  • If audio cuts out when charging, the combined adapter may have a power or protocol limitation rather than a headphone fault.

Bluetooth connects but audio remains on the speaker

  • Open the Bluetooth device details and enable media audio.
  • Select the headphones in the phone’s media-output control.
  • Disconnect another previously paired speaker or car system that may have captured the audio route.
  • Forget and re-pair the headphones if the profile settings are corrupted.

Bottom line for this specific request

There is no universal external product that adds a physical 3.5 mm jack to a USB-C phone while leaving the USB-C port free. Choose USB-C headphones when you are willing to change headphones, or Bluetooth when you want a wireless setup. Keep existing wired headphones only with a compatible DAC-equipped USB-C adapter, accepting that it is an external dongle. A built-in retrofit is a model-specific repair project with unverified feasibility, safety and cost—not a general do-it-yourself upgrade.
