The safest documented ways to reach a UGREEN NAS while away from home are UGREENlink or a private Tailscale network. UGREENlink is the simpler built-in route: it uses your UGREEN Cloud account and generates a web link without asking you to publish a NAS service on a router port. Tailscale is better when you want your NAS, laptop and phone to behave as members of one private network. UGREEN’s P2P mode is another relay-based option. DDNS is different: UGREEN documents it as direct access that requires router port forwarding, so it does not meet the same no-direct-exposure goal.

Choose the access method before changing your router

Start by deciding whether you need a convenient browser link or a private network between several of your own devices. The distinction matters more than the brand of remote-access software: a relay or private overlay can keep your NAS services from being directly reachable at a public address, while DDNS normally points a hostname at your connection and relies on router forwarding.

Method Public router port in the documented setup Account requirement How the connection is described Best fit
UGREENlink No router port is called for in UGREEN’s setup path UGREEN Cloud account UGREEN-managed remote-access link; the generated page opens the UGOS Pro login screen Someone who wants the shortest built-in setup
Tailscale No public NAS service is required A Tailscale account shared by the NAS and remote devices Encrypted, WireGuard-based private network between devices Several computers or phones that should reach NAS services privately
UGREEN P2P mode Designed to avoid traditional public IPv4 port forwarding Use the UGREEN connection workflow shown for your model UGREEN relay service plus local IPv6 NAT traversal Users who want UGREEN’s peer-to-peer connection mode without DDNS configuration
DDNS Yes; UGREEN’s April 2026 guide says router-side port forwarding is required DDNS provider and your NAS/router configuration Direct access that UGREEN says no longer passes through its relay servers Advanced users who deliberately want a direct endpoint and accept the exposure trade-off

The first three approaches support the goal of avoiding a directly published NAS service. None is a guarantee that a NAS is risk-free: your account credentials, firmware, client devices and network conditions still matter.

What “without exposing it to the internet” means

A NAS can be reachable remotely in two very different ways. In a direct design, a public IP address or hostname leads to your home router, which forwards a port to a NAS service. In a relay or private-network design, the remote device first authenticates to a service or overlay, and the NAS communicates through that established connection. The latter avoids making an SMB share, NFS service, SSH daemon or UGOS management page a generally reachable internet endpoint.

UGREENlink and UGREEN’s P2P description fit the relay-based model. Tailscale describes its model as an encrypted, peer-to-peer connection among devices in the same tailnet. The practical rule is simple: do not create port-forwarding rules for NAS services merely because you want to use them while travelling. If you choose DDNS, understand that you are choosing a different architecture, not just a different name for private access.

Set up UGREENlink, the simplest built-in route

UGREEN’s documented desktop-app guidance applies to the UGREEN NAS desktop app for Windows and macOS on firmware 1.16.0.0042 or later. That threshold is presented in the context of the desktop-app article, not as a universal requirement for every UGREEN client or every remote-access feature. UGREEN also warns that labels and menu paths can vary slightly by system or app version, so use the equivalent current label if your interface differs.

1. Open the remote-access settings

  1. Sign in to UGOS on your NAS with an administrator account.
  2. Open Control Panel, then Device Connection, then Remote access.
  3. Locate UGREENlink and enable it.

If you cannot find the menu, confirm the NAS model and UGOS version first. Do not assume that a path copied from a different generation of the interface will be identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Verify the cloud account and choose an ID

  1. When prompted, sign in to or verify your UGREEN Cloud account.
  2. Choose a unique UGREENlink ID according to the rules shown in the interface.
  3. Apply the setting and wait for UGOS to generate the remote-access information.

UGREEN says the system generates a web access link and a client ID after the ID is applied. Save the link in a password manager or another private place rather than posting it publicly.

3. Test the generated link from outside your home network

  1. Disconnect the test phone or laptop from your home Wi-Fi, using mobile data or another trusted network.
  2. Open the generated web link in a browser.
  3. Confirm that it reaches the UGOS Pro login page, then sign in with a NAS account.

Testing from inside the same LAN can hide routing or authentication mistakes. A successful result from a genuinely external network proves that the link works without requiring you to add a router rule for a NAS service.

4. Protect the account that the link exposes

The link is not a substitute for NAS authentication. UGREEN explicitly recommends setting a strong password for the NAS account for better remote-access security. Use a long, unique password that you do not reuse for your cloud account, email or other services. Give each person a separate NAS account when your UGOS version supports that workflow, and avoid sharing an administrator login.

UGREENlink is convenient because UGREEN manages the connection workflow, but it also means the route depends on the vendor account and service. If the link is unavailable, check the NAS’s current cloud sign-in state and the support instructions for your firmware before changing router settings.

Use Tailscale when your devices should form a private network

UGREEN describes Tailscale as a WireGuard-based private networking tool. Tailscale’s NAS guidance says to install its client on the device hosting your files or media and on the remote computers or phones, then join them to the same tailnet. It describes the resulting connection as encrypted and peer-to-peer, allowing access to NAS services without exposing those services to the internet.

1. Check model and installation support

Read the current UGREEN instructions for your exact NAS model and UGOS release before installing anything. UGREEN’s article includes Docker Compose instructions for UGOS Pro deployments that involve containers. That does not mean every UGREEN NAS supports Docker or that Docker Compose is the installation method for every model. Treat the container path as conditional on documented support for your hardware and firmware.

2. Install the Tailscale client on the NAS

  1. Follow UGREEN’s current Tailscale setup article for the supported installation method on your NAS.
  2. Start the client and authenticate it to your Tailscale account.
  3. Confirm that the NAS appears as an enabled device in the same tailnet you intend to use remotely.

The exact package, application or container steps can change with UGOS versions. Do not substitute a generic Docker procedure for the model-specific instructions if your NAS does not document Docker support.

3. Install Tailscale on every remote device

  1. Install the Tailscale client on the phone, laptop or other computer that will connect while away from home.
  2. Sign in with the same Tailscale account or tailnet authorization used for the NAS.
  3. Wait until both devices show as connected.

The important control is account membership: a device signed in to a different account will not automatically become part of the NAS’s private network. Keep access limited to devices and users that actually need it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Connect to the NAS service over the private path

Use the NAS address and service port presented by the Tailscale client or the name configured for your tailnet, then open the same NAS application you would use on the local network. Tailscale’s documented use case covers files, media servers and file shares; the service itself still needs to be running and properly authenticated on the NAS. You do not need to publish that service through a public router port for the Tailscale path.

If a service works on the LAN but not over Tailscale, troubleshoot the service binding and NAS permissions rather than immediately opening a port. A private overlay changes the path to the service; it does not repair a stopped service or an account that lacks permission.

Understand UGREEN’s P2P connection mode

UGREEN describes P2P mode as using its relay service together with local IPv6 NAT traversal. In its comparison with traditional public IPv4 access, UGREEN says P2P avoids configuring DDNS and domain names and avoids exposing IP addresses as described in that article.

That makes P2P conceptually different from DDNS: you are using UGREEN’s connection mechanism rather than pointing a public hostname at your router. Connection behavior can still depend on the client, the local network and whether the required traversal path is available, so do not treat the description as an absolute security or availability guarantee.

Because UGREEN’s menu labels can vary by model and firmware, open the current remote-access or connection settings on your NAS and follow the P2P instructions shown for that release. Do not create a port-forwarding rule simply to force P2P to work; first verify that the feature is enabled, the NAS is online and the client is using the intended UGREEN account.

Why DDNS is not the same as private access

DDNS solves a naming problem: it keeps a hostname associated with a changing home IP address. UGREEN’s Remote Access documentation lists DDNS as a supported method and says that direct NAS access with DDNS no longer goes through UGREEN relay servers. Its April 17, 2026 guide describes DDNS as a more advanced option requiring router-side port forwarding.

That direct path can be valid for a user who intentionally operates and hardens an internet-facing service, but it does not satisfy the narrow goal of keeping NAS services off the public internet. A DDNS hostname by itself does not create private access; the forwarding rule is what sends internet traffic to the NAS.

When DDNS may be appropriate

  • You need a direct endpoint and understand the router, firewall and certificate configuration involved.
  • Your model and current UGREEN documentation explicitly support the DDNS workflow you plan to use.
  • You are prepared to monitor the exposed service and remove the forwarding rule if it is no longer needed.

When to avoid DDNS

  • You want the smallest possible attack surface with no public NAS service.
  • You only need occasional access from your own phone or laptop.
  • You are not comfortable identifying exactly which service and port a forwarding rule exposes.

Do not forward SMB, NFS, SSH or the UGOS management interface to the public internet as a shortcut for remote access. UGREENlink, Tailscale and the documented P2P approach give you alternatives that do not require that shortcut.

Pick the route for your actual travel and work pattern

Choose UGREENlink for one-click browser access

UGREENlink is the natural first choice when you want to open a browser, reach the UGOS Pro login page and avoid router configuration. It requires a UGREEN Cloud account and a NAS account, and it depends on the UGREENlink service being available. The setup is short enough for a household user who does not need to make the NAS part of a broader private network.

Choose Tailscale for several trusted devices

Tailscale is a better fit when a laptop, phone and another computer should all reach NAS services through one private network. Each device needs the client and membership in the same tailnet. The trade-off is a little more setup and account administration than UGREENlink, plus the need to verify that your NAS model supports the documented installation method.

Choose P2P when you want UGREEN’s relay and traversal mode

P2P is useful when you prefer UGREEN’s connection workflow and want to avoid DDNS and traditional IPv4 forwarding. Follow the model-specific interface and be prepared for network-dependent behavior. It is a connection mode, not a promise that every network will provide identical speed or reachability.

Use DDNS only as a deliberate direct-access design

DDNS belongs in a separate decision category because it normally requires a router port and bypasses UGREEN relay servers. Select it only when a direct endpoint is a requirement and you understand the security and maintenance responsibilities that come with publishing a service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Version, model and account checks before troubleshooting

Remote-access instructions are sensitive to firmware and client changes. Before following a guide, record the NAS model, current UGOS version and the device you will use remotely. For the UGREEN desktop-app guidance, note the stated firmware threshold of 1.16.0.0042 or later and remember that it is contextual rather than a blanket requirement for every feature.

Use UGREEN’s current documentation as the authority for menu names and supported installation methods. The relevant references are UGREEN’s Remote Access article, its Tailscale setup article and the P2P connection-mode explanation. For the private-network behavior, see Tailscale’s guide to accessing NAS, media servers and file shares remotely. UGREEN’s April 2026 comparison of UGREENlink, DDNS and Tailscale provides the dated DDNS qualification.

Troubleshoot without opening a public port

The UGREENlink page does not open

  • Confirm that the NAS is powered on and connected to the network.
  • Recheck the UGREEN Cloud sign-in and UGREENlink status in Control Panel > Device Connection > Remote access.
  • Test from a different external network so you can distinguish a home-LAN issue from a service issue.
  • Verify that the link belongs to the current UGREENlink ID and that you are using the generated web link, not an old bookmark.

If the interface has moved, consult the current instructions for your firmware rather than adding router rules that were not part of the UGREENlink setup.

The page opens but authentication fails

  • Make sure you are entering the NAS account credentials, not only the UGREEN Cloud credentials.
  • Check that the account is still enabled and has permission to use the requested NAS functions.
  • Reset or change the password through the local administration path if you have lost it, then retest from outside the LAN.

Use a strong, unique NAS password as UGREEN recommends. Do not weaken authentication to make a remote test succeed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The NAS is missing from Tailscale

  • Confirm that the NAS client is running and authenticated.
  • Check that the NAS and remote device are signed in to the same account or tailnet.
  • Verify that the installation method matches your model and UGOS release, especially if you used a container-based deployment.
  • Test the remote device on another network and confirm that the NAS service itself works locally.

Do not respond to a missing tailnet device by exposing the service through DDNS. Fix account membership and client status first.

P2P works on one network but not another

UGREEN’s P2P design relies on its relay service and local IPv6 NAT traversal, so network conditions can affect the connection. Confirm that the client and NAS are using the intended UGREEN account, that the NAS is online and that the P2P feature remains enabled. If a particular network blocks or alters the required traffic, try a different trusted connection and consult the current UGREEN support instructions. A failure on one network is not evidence that public port forwarding is required.

DDNS resolves but the NAS is unreachable

DDNS only maintains the hostname-to-address relationship. UGREEN’s documented direct-access workflow also requires the correct router-side port forwarding and a listening NAS service. Check those deliberately, identify exactly what service the rule exposes and remove the rule when you no longer need direct access. If your real goal is private access, switch to UGREENlink or Tailscale instead of expanding the forwarding rules.

A practical remote-access checklist

  • Confirm the NAS model and UGOS version before installing a client or container.
  • Decide whether you need a browser link or a private network across multiple devices.
  • Use UGREENlink for the shortest built-in path, Tailscale for a private device network, or UGREEN P2P for its relay and IPv6 traversal mode.
  • Keep the NAS account password strong and unique.
  • Test from outside the home network.
  • Do not forward SMB, NFS, SSH or the UGOS management interface merely to make remote access work.
  • If using DDNS, document every router rule and treat it as direct internet exposure rather than private access.
  • Recheck the current vendor instructions whenever UGOS or the client application changes.

For most readers asking how to access a UGREEN NAS while away from home, UGREENlink is the least complicated starting point. Choose Tailscale when you need several personal devices to share a private path to NAS services. Keep DDNS separate from those recommendations because its documented router-forwarding requirement creates a direct-access design.
