How to access your home NAS securely from outside your network

The safest default is to create a private VPN connection first, then open the NAS using its normal local address or a private VPN name. Do not publish the NAS administration page, file-sharing ports or SSH directly on the internet just to make remote access work.

For most home users, an overlay VPN installed on the NAS and each remote device is the simplest route. A VPN server on a compatible router or NAS is better when you need access to several devices on the whole home LAN. If you use a supported Synology system and only need selected applications, QuickConnect can avoid manual port forwarding, but it has app, relay and regional limitations.

What secure remote NAS access actually means

When you are at home, a laptop reaches the NAS over a private address such as 192.168.1.20. From a hotel, office or mobile network, that address is not routable. Secure remote access creates an authenticated, encrypted path back to your home before the NAS connection is made.

That distinction matters. A VPN changes the route to the NAS; it does not replace NAS account security, software updates, least-privilege permissions or backups. A private tunnel also does not make a vulnerable service invulnerable. Keep the NAS and its applications current, use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where the platform offers it, and give each account only the shares and administration rights it needs.

There are three practical patterns:

  • Overlay VPN: install a mesh-style VPN client on the NAS and on every device that needs access. The enrolled devices communicate over a private network without exposing NAS service ports.
  • Traditional VPN: run a VPN server on a compatible router or NAS. A remote device joins the tunnel and behaves as though it were on the home LAN.
  • Vendor-managed access: a service such as Synology QuickConnect brokers access for supported Synology apps, often without manual router configuration.

Support is model-, operating-system- and firmware-specific. Check the current documentation for your exact NAS and router before installing packages or forwarding any port.

Choose the access method before changing your router

Question Overlay VPN Traditional VPN Synology QuickConnect
What can you reach? Only enrolled devices and the NAS services you permit; additional subnet-routing features depend on the product and configuration. Usually the NAS and other devices on the home LAN, subject to routing and firewall rules. Supported Synology applications and clients, not every third-party service.
Where does it run? On a supported NAS plus each remote computer or phone. On a compatible router or NAS; the router is often preferable because it remains available if the NAS is offline. In supported Synology DSM and compatible mobile or PC clients.
Router changes Normally no inbound port for the NAS service itself. Usually one forwarded VPN port when the server sits behind the router; the NAS service ports remain closed. Synology says manual port forwarding or router settings are not required for supported clients.
Identity and relay dependence Uses the overlay provider’s account and coordination service; a relay may be used when peers cannot connect directly. You operate the VPN endpoint and authentication, but may need dynamic DNS and a reachable home connection. Depends on Synology’s QuickConnect identity and relay infrastructure.
Application coverage Anything that works over the private NAS address, including administration, file protocols and other services, subject to firewall rules. Anything reachable through the routed home network and allowed by its firewall. Only applications and packages that Synology documents as QuickConnect-compatible.
Performance Direct peer links generally have lower latency and higher throughput; relay paths are a fallback and can be slower. Depends on your home upload speed, VPN protocol, endpoint hardware and network conditions. A relayed path can add latency; availability and behavior vary by region and service.

Use an overlay VPN when a few known devices need NAS access and you want the least router work. Use a traditional VPN when you need broad access to the home network or want to control the endpoint yourself. Use QuickConnect when its supported app list matches your needs and convenience outweighs dependence on a vendor service.

Option 1: an overlay VPN on the NAS and your devices

Tailscale’s NAS documentation covers integrations or packages for Synology, QNAP, Unraid and TrueNAS, with client applications for common desktop and mobile systems. Its NAS access guide says the NAS and remote device must be signed in to the same tailnet. You then connect using the NAS’s Tailscale hostname or Tailscale IP rather than publishing its home WAN address. The guide was last validated May 18, 2026, and the integration list was last validated October 29, 2025; verify current support for your model and operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the NAS

  1. Update the NAS operating system and install security updates before adding remote access.
  2. Confirm that your model and firmware have an official Tailscale package or integration. Do not install an unofficial build merely because it has a similar name.
  3. Install the package from the NAS vendor’s supported package mechanism or the integration instructions. During setup, the package presents an authentication link or code.
  4. Sign in with the account that owns the tailnet. Give the NAS a clear device name, such as home-nas, and record the private address shown by the client.
  5. In the tailnet administration controls, approve the device and set access rules so only the people and devices that need the NAS can reach it. Keep administrative access narrower than ordinary file access.

Enroll each remote device

  1. Install the current Tailscale client on the laptop, desktop or phone that will connect remotely.
  2. Sign in to the same tailnet used by the NAS. A device signed in to a different account or tailnet will not be able to use the NAS’s private address.
  3. Check that the NAS appears as home-nas or another approved name and that the client reports a connected state.
  4. Open the NAS application using its normal protocol and port, replacing the home LAN address with the Tailscale hostname or IP. For example, use the NAS web interface over HTTPS at the private VPN name, or map an SMB share to that name.
  5. Test from a genuinely external connection, such as cellular data with Wi-Fi disabled. A test made from inside the home network can succeed even when remote routing is misconfigured.

Understand direct and relayed connections

Tailscale documents three connection forms: direct, DERP relay and peer relay. All three use end-to-end WireGuard encryption; the stated difference is performance. A direct path generally provides lower latency and higher throughput. If firewalls, carrier-grade NAT or restrictive networks prevent a direct path, traffic can be relayed as a fallback. A relay may reduce transfer speed or increase interactive latency, but it does not turn the connection into unencrypted traffic.

Do not treat a relay as a benchmark or guarantee. The actual result depends on both networks, the NAS, the client and the relay location. For large backups, test a representative transfer and watch the VPN client’s connection details rather than assuming that a particular path will always be used.

Limit what the overlay can reach

Keep the initial design device-to-NAS only. If you later enable subnet routing to reach printers, cameras or other LAN hosts, document the routes and apply access rules deliberately. A VPN that can reach the entire home network increases the impact of a compromised remote device. Disable routes and device approvals that are no longer needed.

Option 2: a traditional VPN on a router or NAS

A traditional VPN creates a tunnel between the remote device and your home network. QNAP documents WireGuard, OpenVPN and L2TP/IPsec in QVPN and also describes using a QHora router as the VPN endpoint, with WireGuard among the listed protocols. The exact screens and supported protocols differ by router, NAS, ISP and network topology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide where the VPN server should run

  • Router endpoint: the router is normally powered on continuously and can route the tunnel to the NAS even when the NAS is restarting. This is useful when several home devices must be reachable.
  • NAS endpoint: the NAS may provide more detailed user and access controls, but it must be running and its vendor’s VPN implementation must be maintained.

If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound connections may not reach your router even after port forwarding. Ask the provider whether your connection has a publicly reachable IPv4 address, or use an overlay VPN that can operate through outbound connections.

  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Set up the server without exposing NAS services

  1. Update the router or NAS firmware and install the vendor’s VPN component. Select a current protocol supported by both endpoint and client; QNAP lists WireGuard, OpenVPN and L2TP/IPsec, but your equipment may support fewer.
  2. Create a dedicated VPN user or key for each person or device. Avoid sharing one profile, because individual credentials make revocation and auditing possible.
  3. Define the address pool for VPN clients and the routes they may use. Start with the NAS subnet only if that is all you need.
  4. Enable the VPN server and export the client profile or configuration. Protect the file like a password; it may contain private keys.
  5. If the VPN server is behind the router, forward only the configured VPN port and protocol to the VPN endpoint. Do not forward the NAS administration, SMB, AFP, NFS or SSH ports to the internet.
  6. If your public address changes, configure a vendor-supported dynamic-DNS name or another documented method. Confirm that the name resolves to your current home address before testing.
  7. Install the matching VPN client on the remote device, import its profile, connect, and then open the NAS using its ordinary LAN address, such as 192.168.1.20.

QNAP’s documented pattern is explicit: first establish the VPN tunnel, then connect to the NAS using its local LAN IP exactly as you would from home. This keeps the NAS service itself off the public internet while the VPN endpoint handles the external connection.

What to verify after connecting

  • The client receives an address from the VPN pool.
  • The route to the NAS subnet is present and does not conflict with the network you are visiting. Hotel and café networks often also use 192.168.1.0/24; overlapping ranges can make a correct tunnel appear broken.
  • The NAS firewall permits the VPN subnet on the required ports.
  • DNS resolves the NAS name correctly, or you can reach its LAN IP directly.
  • Only intended LAN routes are advertised. If the VPN is for one NAS, do not automatically route every home subnet.

Option 3: Synology QuickConnect

Synology describes QuickConnect as a way for supported mobile and PC clients to connect without manually configuring port forwarding or router settings. It can select a connection path and use a relay when a direct path is unavailable. Synology states that QuickConnect uses end-to-end encryption when SSL is enabled.

When QuickConnect fits

  • You use a supported Synology DSM version and the specific Synology application you need appears in its QuickConnect compatibility documentation.
  • You prefer a vendor-managed identity over configuring a VPN server and router.
  • You mainly need the supported file, photo or management clients rather than arbitrary third-party services.

Important limitations

QuickConnect does not automatically make every NAS service remotely available. Synology documents unsupported third-party applications, packages that require direct IP or DDNS mapping, possible latency on relayed links and relay-availability restrictions in some regions. Enable SSL and use a strong Synology account with multifactor authentication where available. Verify the desired app on your exact DSM release; a feature shown in a general specification page may not cover every package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose QuickConnect as a convenience feature, not as a substitute for account hygiene or updates. If an application needs direct addressing, move that application behind a VPN instead of opening its port by trial and error.

Why exposing SSH or the NAS web panel is the wrong shortcut

QNAP support documentation for QTS and QuTS hero, last modified August 4, 2026, warns that SSH access working on the local network will typically fail from a WAN address because home routers block unsolicited inbound traffic by default. It calls that expected behavior and cautions that intentionally exposing SSH invites brute-force attacks and automated exploit scanners.

The same principle applies to administration panels and file protocols. Port forwarding can make a service reachable, but it also makes that service discoverable and responsible for resisting internet-wide scanning. A VPN limits the exposed surface to the VPN endpoint and requires an authenticated tunnel before the NAS service is reachable. Never disable the router firewall or forward SSH simply to bypass a failed VPN configuration.

Security controls that remain necessary

  • Accounts: disable default or unused accounts, require long unique passwords and enable multifactor authentication when supported.
  • Permissions: separate read-only media access from write and administrative access. Remove access when a person or device no longer needs it.
  • Updates: patch DSM, QTS, QuTS hero, router firmware, VPN packages and client applications. Check release notes for security fixes.
  • Encryption: use HTTPS for the NAS interface and encrypted file protocols where available. A VPN protects the path, while application encryption protects the service session.
  • Firewalling: allow management interfaces only from trusted VPN identities or subnets. Keep WAN rules closed except for the documented VPN listener, if using a traditional VPN.
  • Logging: review VPN sign-ins, failed NAS logins and new device approvals. Revoke lost devices immediately.
  • Backups: maintain at least one backup that cannot be altered through the NAS account used for everyday files. Remote access does not protect against deletion, ransomware or hardware failure.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The VPN connects, but the NAS does not open

Confirm that you are using the VPN hostname or LAN address, not the NAS’s private address from the wrong network. Check the client route table, NAS firewall rules and the service port. Test the NAS web interface first, then a file protocol. If the visiting network uses the same subnet as home, change the home LAN to a less commonly overlapping range when practical.

The overlay device is online but transfers are slow

Inspect whether the connection is direct or relayed. A relay can add latency and reduce throughput; this is a performance difference, not a loss of WireGuard end-to-end encryption in the documented Tailscale connection types. Test from another network and compare a small file with a large sequential transfer. Your home’s upload bandwidth may be the limiting factor.

Traditional VPN clients cannot connect at all

Verify the public address, dynamic-DNS record, forwarded VPN port, protocol and server status. Check for carrier-grade NAT or a double-router arrangement. If the ISP modem and your own router both perform NAT, place the VPN endpoint on the reachable router or forward the port through both devices according to their current manuals. Do not solve the problem by forwarding SSH.

QuickConnect works for one app but not another

That behavior can be expected. Synology documents app and package compatibility limits, and some packages require direct IP or DDNS mapping. Use a VPN for unsupported services and leave their ports closed. If a relay is selected, expect higher latency than a direct path and check whether relay service is available in your region.

A previously working device suddenly loses access

Check whether its VPN account session expired, the device was removed from the approved-device list, a certificate or key was rotated, or a NAS/router update changed firewall behavior. Revoke lost credentials before issuing a replacement profile. Re-test from outside the home network after each change.

A practical decision checklist

  1. List exactly what must be reachable: one NAS, several NAS services or the whole home LAN.
  2. Check official support for your NAS model, firmware, router and remote operating systems.
  3. Choose overlay VPN for enrolled-device access, traditional VPN for routed LAN access, or QuickConnect for supported Synology applications.
  4. Keep NAS service ports closed to the WAN. For a traditional VPN, forward only the documented VPN listener.
  5. Create separate identities, enable multifactor authentication where offered and apply least-privilege rules.
  6. Test from cellular data or another external network, including the applications you actually use.
  7. Record recovery details: administrator account, VPN keys, backup location and how to revoke a lost device.
  8. Review the configuration after firmware updates and whenever your ISP, router or NAS network changes.

What to expect in everyday use

With an overlay VPN, the normal workflow is to sign in to the VPN client, confirm the NAS is online, and use its private hostname. With a traditional VPN, connect the tunnel first and then use the same LAN address and applications used at home. With QuickConnect, launch a supported Synology client and let the service select a direct or relay path.

None of these methods guarantees a particular speed. Remote performance is bounded by the home’s upload capacity, the NAS and router hardware, encryption overhead, protocol behavior and whether the path is direct or relayed. Measure your own workload, especially if you plan to edit large media files or run remote backups.
