The quickest way to check voicemail from your own mobile phone is usually to open the Phone app and hold 1. Verizon also publishes *86. To check messages from another phone, call your mobile number (or your carrier’s alternate access number), interrupt the greeting with the carrier’s specified key, and enter your voicemail password or PIN when prompted. The correct key and access number depend on the carrier, so do not treat one carrier’s procedure as universal.

This guide covers the current United States instructions documented for Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, explains the difference between calling a mailbox and using Visual Voicemail, and gives recovery steps when the shortcut fails.

Choose the access method first

There are two different ways to call into a voicemail mailbox:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • From the subscriber’s own phone: use the phone’s voicemail shortcut, normally by holding 1, or enter the carrier’s published code. The network generally recognizes the calling line automatically.
  • From another phone: call the mobile number associated with the mailbox (or an alternate carrier access number), wait for the greeting, interrupt it with the carrier’s key, and authenticate with the mailbox password or PIN.

Visual Voicemail is a separate access method. It displays messages in an app or phone interface; it does not use the spoken call-in menu described here.

Carrier numbers, keys, and password behavior

These are the documented United States procedures for the three major carriers covered here. “From another phone” means that you are not calling from the subscriber’s handset.

Carrier From the subscriber’s phone From another phone Authentication note
Verizon Hold 1, or dial *86. Call the 10-digit mobile number and press # during the greeting. Follow the prompts to enter the voicemail password.
AT&T Hold 1. Call the 10-digit wireless number and press * when the voicemail greeting plays. A password is required by default when calling to access voicemail.
T-Mobile Hold 1. If the normal method does not work, dial 1-805-637-7249, enter the 10-digit mobile number, and press * while the greeting plays. The device usually does not request a password, but a prompt can appear in special circumstances such as a caller-ID-blocked call. T-Mobile recommends password protection.

Verizon’s retrieval instructions were updated October 12, 2026. AT&T’s cited instructions were last updated May 5, 2025. T-Mobile’s retention and access guidance was current when checked in 2026. Carrier menus can change, so use the carrier’s current support page for a newer instruction tied to your plan or device.

Calling voicemail from your own phone

  1. Open the Phone app and display the keypad.
  2. Press and hold 1. On Verizon, you can instead dial *86.
  3. Wait for the voicemail system to answer. The first call may route you through setup rather than directly to saved messages.
  4. Listen to the spoken menu and use the keypad choices it announces. Menu numbers can differ by carrier, mailbox type, and account settings, so follow the current prompt instead of relying on a remembered shortcut.
  5. If the system asks for a password or PIN, enter it without saying it aloud where another person could hear.

Holding 1 is a phone shortcut, not a universal voicemail number. It works only when the handset’s voicemail key is correctly associated with the carrier account. A recently changed SIM, a ported number, a reset phone, or an account provisioned by a different carrier can leave that association out of date.

When holding 1 opens the wrong mailbox

Stop before entering confidential information if the greeting identifies another number or another person. End the call, verify which SIM or eSIM is active, and try the carrier’s published code. If the number was recently transferred between carriers, the old carrier’s shortcut may remain in the phone’s settings even though the mailbox now belongs to the new carrier.

Calling voicemail from another phone

Remote retrieval is useful when your handset is lost, out of battery, damaged, or unable to connect to the mobile network. The sequence is deliberately different from the on-device shortcut:

  1. Use a phone that can place a normal voice call. A landline or another mobile phone is sufficient.
  2. Call the 10-digit mobile number attached to the voicemail mailbox, unless your carrier instructs you to use an alternate access number.
  3. Let the call reach the voicemail greeting. Do not press the interruption key before the greeting begins; the system may interpret an early keypress as a menu choice or ignore it.
  4. Press the carrier-specific interruption key shown in the table above. This switches the call from the public greeting to the mailbox login flow.
  5. Enter the voicemail password or PIN when requested. If the system asks for the mobile number first, enter all 10 digits, including the area code.
  6. Wait for the authenticated menu, then listen, delete, save, or otherwise manage messages using the spoken instructions.
  7. Hang up only after the system confirms that a message has been saved or that a change has completed.

The interruption key is not interchangeable between carriers. Verizon documents #; AT&T documents *; T-Mobile’s alternate-number procedure also uses * after you enter the 10-digit number. Pressing the wrong key can leave you listening to the greeting, restart it, or send you to a different menu.

Carrier-specific details that affect the call

Verizon

For an on-device call, holding 1 and dialing *86 are both documented options. For remote retrieval, the greeting must be interrupted with # after you call the 10-digit mobile number. Verizon’s instructions then direct you to enter the voicemail password and follow the prompts. If a remote call goes straight to the greeting again, wait for the greeting to finish enough for the interruption window, press # once, and avoid repeatedly sending keys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AT&T

AT&T documents holding 1 from the subscriber’s phone. From another phone, call the 10-digit wireless number and press * when the voicemail greeting plays. AT&T requires a password by default for call-in access, so remote retrieval normally cannot be completed without the correct password. This requirement is separate from whether Visual Voicemail happens to open without a visible login on the handset.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile documents holding 1 from the subscriber’s phone. If calling the mobile number does not provide the expected mailbox access, its alternate number is 1-805-637-7249. After dialing that number, enter the 10-digit mobile number and press * while the greeting plays, then enter the password if requested. T-Mobile’s usual on-device behavior may not ask for a password, but the system can request one in circumstances such as a caller-ID-blocked call. T-Mobile recommends enabling password protection even when the handset normally skips the prompt.

Passwords, PINs, and caller ID

A voicemail password is different from the phone’s screen-lock code, SIM PIN, account sign-in, or wireless-service account password. Keep the voicemail credential available before attempting remote retrieval, but do not store it in a place that another person with the phone can read.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
  • On-device calls: some systems identify the calling line and omit a password prompt during ordinary use.
  • Remote calls: the system has to establish that the caller is allowed to hear the mailbox, so a password or PIN is more likely to be required.
  • Blocked caller ID: T-Mobile notes that its system can request a password in this context even when it normally skips one on the device.
  • Failed attempts: stop guessing if the system warns about lockout. Use the carrier’s password-reset or voicemail-support process rather than cycling through possible numbers.

If you never created a password, the carrier’s setup flow may require you to create one the first time you call in. If you inherited a mailbox after changing devices or SIMs, the existing mailbox credential normally remains the relevant one; replacing the handset does not necessarily reset it.

What to do when the shortcut or remote call fails

Work through these checks in order. Each one isolates a different failure point without exposing the mailbox to unnecessary login attempts.

1. Confirm which carrier owns the mailbox

Use the carrier that currently services the mobile number, not the carrier that supplied the handset. A number port, eSIM change, prepaid conversion, or move to a mobile virtual network operator can change the voicemail platform. Do not assume that a code from a previous carrier will continue to work.

2. Verify that voicemail is set up

A new line can route callers to a generic recording until the mailbox is initialized. Call from the subscriber’s phone, complete any setup prompts, record a greeting if requested, and then retry remote retrieval. If the system says that voicemail is unavailable rather than asking for a password, contact the carrier to confirm that the feature is provisioned.

3. Check the exact number and key timing

For remote access, confirm that you dialed all 10 digits and pressed the interruption key only after the greeting began. Verizon and AT&T use different interruption keys, and T-Mobile’s alternate-number route has an additional step in which you enter the mobile number after dialing the access number.

4. Test a normal voice call

If the other phone cannot place or maintain a regular call, voicemail access will fail for a reason unrelated to the mailbox. Try a different phone or network, and make sure the calling phone is not in a mode that blocks outgoing calls.

5. Check caller-ID blocking

A blocked caller ID can change authentication behavior. On T-Mobile, it can trigger a password prompt that may not appear during ordinary on-device use. Temporarily allow caller ID for the test call if your privacy policy permits, or be ready to enter the password.

6. Recheck the password without guessing repeatedly

Type the voicemail password slowly and wait for the confirmation tone or spoken response. If it is rejected, stop after the number of attempts the system allows and use the carrier’s documented reset path. A locked mailbox generally requires carrier assistance or a reset process; repeated attempts will not bypass it.

7. Consider network and roaming conditions

Voicemail access can behave differently when the subscriber is roaming or when the call is placed through a calling service that alters caller ID. First test from a standard cellular or landline call, then consult the carrier’s instructions for the specific country, plan, or roaming arrangement. The procedures in this article are United States guidance and do not establish an international access code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Escalate with useful details

When contacting the carrier, record the mobile number, the phone or line used to call, whether caller ID was blocked, the exact greeting heard, and the point at which the call failed. Those details help support staff distinguish an incorrect key from a missing voicemail feature or an authentication lock.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Saving messages before they expire

Retention is controlled by the carrier and voicemail type, not by a universal industry rule. T-Mobile states that messages are automatically deleted after 14 to 30 days, depending on the voicemail type. After listening to a T-Mobile message, pressing 9 saves it according to that system’s instructions. That time range must not be applied to Verizon, AT&T, or another carrier without a separate statement from that carrier.

If a message matters for legal, financial, medical, or personal reasons, save or export it through an available carrier or phone feature as soon as possible. Do not treat the “saved” state in one carrier’s menu as proof that the message is permanent; ask the carrier how long saved messages remain and whether mailbox limits apply.

Calling voicemail versus Visual Voicemail

Calling voicemail uses an interactive voice response system. It works from the subscriber’s phone or, with the correct interruption and authentication sequence, from another phone. It is the fallback when the Visual Voicemail app cannot load or when the handset is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Visual Voicemail presents a list of messages in a phone interface so you can select, play, delete, or sometimes share an individual item without stepping through spoken menus. AT&T explains that Visual Voicemail messages download to the smartphone over cellular data. That data connection and the app’s provisioning are separate from the ability to call and hear the mailbox. A phone can therefore have working call-in voicemail while Visual Voicemail is disabled, or show a Visual Voicemail list while a remote call still requires a password.

Limits for MVNOs, business mailboxes, and other setups

The documented procedures here cover Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile consumer mobile service in the United States. They do not establish a universal method for every mobile virtual network operator, prepaid configuration, business telephone system, home-phone mailbox, or international roaming arrangement.

  • MVNO: follow the MVNO’s voicemail instructions even when its radio network is supplied by one of the major carriers. The access number and interruption key can be different.
  • Prepaid service: confirm that voicemail is enabled and that the account is active; an expired balance or suspended line can change the response.
  • Business systems: a company phone system may use an extension, shared mailbox, or administrator-controlled access code rather than the mobile-number procedure.
  • Dual-SIM phones: make sure the call is placed from the line whose voicemail you intend to check. The shortcut can follow the selected voice line, not necessarily the line you expected.

When your plan is not one of the three listed, search the carrier’s current support instructions for “check voicemail from another phone” and verify the exact key and password policy before trying.

Security when checking voicemail remotely

  • Use a phone and location where other people cannot hear the messages or the password.
  • Do not leave the mailbox open on a borrowed phone after hanging up.
  • Prefer a unique voicemail password rather than a familiar birthday, phone number, or account PIN.
  • Be cautious with speakerphone and call recording; both can expose private messages.
  • If the mailbox may have been accessed by someone else, change the voicemail password through the carrier’s official process and review any greeting or settings that can be changed from the menu.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Are you calling from the subscriber’s own phone or another phone?
  2. Which carrier currently services the number?
  3. Is voicemail already initialized?
  4. For remote access, did you wait for the greeting before pressing the carrier’s interruption key?
  5. Do you have the correct voicemail password or PIN?
  6. Is caller ID blocked or altered by the calling service?
  7. Are you relying on a carrier, MVNO, prepaid plan, or roaming setup not covered by the listed instructions?
  8. If a message is important, have you saved it before the carrier’s retention period ends?

When any answer is uncertain, stop using remembered shortcuts and check the carrier’s current support instructions for the exact plan and device. That is safer than applying a code or interruption key from a different mailbox.
