Open Recovery settings and start a reset

Select Start > Settings > System > Recovery.

Under Recovery options, select Reset PC.

Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.

Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall if prompted.

Review the choices and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.
Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance describes these options and the reset process. The exact prompts can vary with the choices you make.

Choose what to keep

Back up important files before either choice. A reset reinstalls Windows, and its outcome depends on the options selected.
What the Clean data option means
With Remove everything, an optional Clean data setting makes removed files harder to recover. Microsoft cautions that this consumer option does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards, so do not treat it as certified secure erasure.

Choose how Windows is reinstalled

If Windows will not start normally
You can use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) when Windows cannot be used normally. In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC, then follow the prompts. The way to enter WinRE depends on the device’s condition; follow Microsoft’s current recovery instructions for the appropriate route.
If device encryption is enabled, most WinRE recovery options require the BitLocker recovery key. Find the key before beginning a recovery operation that requests it; Microsoft’s reset instructions also advise having it ready for an encrypted device.

Consider less disruptive recovery options first
If Windows still starts but is slow, freezes, crashes, or behaves unexpectedly, Microsoft recommends trying less disruptive recovery options before resetting. Depending on Windows version and device setup, possibilities include troubleshooting, uninstalling a recent update if it appears to have caused the problem, or using Reinstall Windows through Windows Update on eligible Windows 11 versions. See Microsoft’s recovery options guide for availability and instructions. If the PC will not start, WinRE includes options such as uninstalling updates and Reset this PC. For a work- or school-managed PC, contact the IT department if recovery options do not resolve the problem.
What to expect while Reset this PC runs
The screen can remain black for an extended period, and the PC may restart during a reset. Do not manually restart or shut down the computer just because the screen is temporarily black; Microsoft warns that interrupting the process can cause the reset to fail.

Optional: Create a Recovery Drive while the PC works
A Recovery Drive can provide USB recovery media for later use. Creating one erases any data already on the USB drive, and the media does not include personal files. Back up those files separately. Microsoft explains the process and cautions in its Recovery Drive instructions.
