Having an item in your Apple purchase history does not guarantee that you can still download or play it after changing storefronts. Apple ties availability to the country or region of your Apple Account’s storefront. Before you change that setting, download important apps, music, films, TV shows and books to the devices you may need. Apple warns that “Some types of content might not be available in your new country or region.” (Apple Support)
The storefront is an Apple Account setting, not an iPhone hardware setting. On an iPhone, use Settings > your name > Media & Purchases > View Account > Country/Region. You may need to clear account balance, subscriptions and pending transactions first, and Apple may request a payment method and billing address valid in the destination region.

Understand the two questions: ownership record and current availability
Your purchase history is a record, not a permanent download entitlement
Apple keeps a history of apps and media obtained with an Apple Account. That record can remain visible even when a title is no longer listed in the storefront you are using. A past charge or a listing in purchase history therefore proves that the account acquired the item; it does not establish that the item is currently offered for download, streaming or playback in another country.

Licensing, publisher decisions and catalog rules differ by country. Apple’s country-change guidance specifically cautions that some content may not be available in the new region. The support page does not provide a universal list of titles that transfer, so check each important item in the destination storefront before switching. Do not assume that every app, album, film, season or book follows your account automatically.

Why downloading first is the safest sequence
If a title disappears from the destination storefront, a copy already downloaded to a compatible device may remain usable under the service’s normal rules, while an item you have not downloaded may be harder or impossible to retrieve. This is why Apple tells users to redownload important purchases to devices they may use before changing country or region. The practical order is: identify essentials, download them, verify they open or play, then change the storefront.
Prepare your Apple Account before changing country or region
Apple’s current preparation requirements are summarized below. Complete every applicable item before opening the country-change screen.
- Use remaining Apple Account balance. Spend the balance on the account before the move. A residual balance can block the change.
- Cancel blocking subscriptions. End subscriptions that prevent a region change and wait until their current billing periods finish. Cancelling an auto-renewal does not necessarily end access immediately; Apple requires the relevant period to have ended.
- Clear pending activity. Wait for memberships, pre-orders, movie rentals, Season Passes and pending store-credit refunds to finish. Apple notes that a pre-order may need to be cancelled.
- Prepare destination-region billing details. Apple may require a payment method and billing address valid in the new country or region. The requirement is conditional, not universal, so follow the prompts you receive.
- Check Family Sharing status. A member of a Family Sharing group may be unable to change country or region while still in that group. Resolve the group issue before retrying.
- Download essential content. Save apps and media that you may need, and test the downloads while the original storefront is still active.
Check and use your balance
Open your Apple Account balance in the account or App Store interface and spend the remaining amount. Do not leave a small credit assuming it will transfer. If the balance is too small for a normal purchase, Apple’s documented requirement remains to spend it; contact Apple Support for account-specific assistance rather than trying to bypass the storefront rule with unrelated products.

Resolve rentals, pre-orders and refunds
A rented film, an active Season Pass, an unfulfilled pre-order, a membership still processing or a pending store-credit refund can keep the account tied to the current storefront. Let the transaction complete where possible. If Apple indicates that a pre-order must be cancelled, cancel it before attempting the move and verify that no other pending item remains.
Decide whether you can supply a local payment method
Have a payment method and billing address from the destination region available in case Apple asks for them. Apple also describes a different option for someone who does not want to enter a payment method: wait until physically in the new country or region and create a new Apple Account. The cited guidance does not say that this new account inherits previous purchases, so treat it as a separate account, not a migration mechanism.
Download apps and media while the original storefront still works
Apps
- Open the App Store while signed in to the Apple Account that bought the app.
- Open your App Store purchase history and locate the app.
- Tap the redownload control next to the app. Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes this as finding the app “if it’s still available in the App Store” and then tapping the redownload control (Apple iPhone User Guide).
- Launch the app and sign in if it has its own account. A successful installation does not guarantee that the app’s online service, in-app purchases or local data will continue to work after a region change.
The conditional wording matters: an app can appear in historical purchases yet lack a current App Store listing. If the redownload control is absent, take a screenshot of the purchase record and keep the app installed on any device that still has it. Do not delete a working copy merely to reinstall it after the storefront change.

Music
In the Music app, download albums, songs and playlists you expect to use offline. Check that the downloaded tracks play in Airplane Mode or with network access disabled. A library entry that is visible online is not the same as a locally downloaded file, and catalog rights can differ after the account’s storefront changes.

Films and TV shows
Use the Apple TV app’s library and download controls for films, episodes and seasons that matter to you. Open several downloaded items before switching so you know the device has completed the download. Rentals and Season Passes are also among the transactions Apple says must be completed or cleared before a region change, so do not leave them pending.
Books and audiobooks
Download important books and audiobooks in the Books app and confirm they open from the device library without requiring a fresh store lookup. Keep in mind that availability can differ by country even when the title remains visible in your account history.
Make a device inventory
List the iPhone, iPad, Mac or other authorized device on which each essential item is stored. This prevents a common mistake: changing the storefront and then discovering that the only device containing a needed download was erased, replaced or signed out. Keep the original device intact until you have confirmed access from the new storefront.
Change the Apple Account country or region on iPhone
Apple’s current iPhone path is documented in its country-or-region instructions (Apple Support, updated 1 October 2026). The labels can vary slightly by iOS release, but the account sequence is:

- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of Settings.
- Tap Media & Purchases.
- Tap View Account. Sign in if Apple asks.
- Tap Country/Region.
- Choose the new country or region.
- Read and accept the displayed terms and conditions.
- Enter the requested payment method and billing address for the destination region, if Apple requires them.
- Submit the change and wait for the account to update before attempting new purchases or redownloads.
This changes the storefront associated with the Apple Account. It does not change the iPhone’s physical location, language, cellular plan or hardware region. If the Country/Region option is unavailable or the submission fails, use the blocker checks later in this guide instead of repeatedly entering different billing details.
Use Apple’s web route when the iPhone path is inconvenient
You can manage the same account setting at account.apple.com. Sign in, open Personal Information, choose Country/Region, select the destination and follow the displayed instructions. The web route is useful when you have a full keyboard or cannot comfortably complete the form on the phone, but it does not bypass the same balance, subscription, pending-transaction or Family Sharing requirements.
Apple also documents desktop account controls through Apple Music or Apple TV. Regardless of the device used, the setting belongs to the Apple Account’s media storefront, so changing it in a browser or on a computer produces the same account-level effect as the iPhone flow.

What to expect after the storefront changes
Check each essential item again
Open the App Store purchase history and your media libraries after the change. Try to redownload an app only if it is still offered in the current App Store. For media, check whether the item appears in the destination catalog and whether the already downloaded copy opens or plays. Availability must be evaluated title by title; there is no blanket promise that all earlier purchases remain downloadable.

Do not interpret a missing listing as proof that the account was erased
A title missing from the new storefront can reflect regional catalog rights rather than deletion of your Apple Account history. Keep the original purchase details and any downloaded copy. If the title later returns to the catalog, its availability can change independently of the fact that you bought it in another country.
Plan future purchases around the active storefront
New apps and media are bought through the storefront currently attached to the Apple Account. Before paying for a title, confirm that it is offered in that storefront and that the billing method is accepted there. This avoids creating another region-specific purchase that may become difficult to access after a future move.

Changing region while in a family group
Apple says a family member may be unable to change country or region while in a Family Sharing group. If the Country/Region change is blocked and the account is in a family, check the organizer and member status first. Resolve the Family Sharing condition according to Apple’s account instructions, then retry the storefront change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Purchase Sharing is not a catalog workaround
A family organizer can enable Purchase Sharing so members can share eligible apps, music, books and other purchases (Apple Support: Family Sharing purchase sharing). This sharing applies only to eligible purchases and does not guarantee that a title restricted in one country will appear in another country’s catalog.
Turning Purchase Sharing off has a consequence
Stopping Purchase Sharing removes access to purchases made by other family members, although some subscriptions may remain shared. Before changing that setting, identify which apps or media you use through another member’s purchase history and decide whether you need your own copy or subscription.
Troubleshoot a country or region change that will not complete
| What you see | Likely documented cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The Country/Region change is refused immediately. | Remaining Apple Account balance. | Spend the balance, confirm it is zero, then retry from Settings > your name > Media & Purchases > View Account. |
| The account says a subscription prevents the change. | A blocking subscription is still active. | Cancel it and wait until its current period ends; cancellation alone may not end the period immediately. |
| The account has an unfinished transaction. | Membership, pre-order, rental, Season Pass or store-credit refund is pending. | Wait for processing to finish, or cancel a pre-order if Apple instructs you to do so. |
| The form asks for billing details you do not have. | Apple requires a payment method or billing address valid in the destination region. | Enter valid local details. If you do not want to provide a payment method, Apple describes waiting until you are physically in the new region and creating a new Apple Account instead; that account is not documented as inheriting earlier purchases. |
| The Country/Region control is unavailable while the account is in a family. | Family Sharing membership. | Review Family Sharing status and resolve the group restriction before trying again. |
| An app is visible in purchase history but has no redownload control. | The app may no longer be available in the current App Store. | Keep any installed copy, check the destination storefront directly and do not assume the historical purchase record guarantees a new download. |
| Shared apps or media disappeared after a family setting changed. | Purchase Sharing was stopped or the item is not eligible for sharing. | Ask the family organizer to review Purchase Sharing, or obtain the item through your own account if it is available in the active storefront. |
Should you create a second Apple Account?
Apple mentions creating a new Apple Account for someone who is physically in the new country or region and does not want to enter a payment method on the existing account. This can provide an account associated with the new storefront, but Apple’s cited instructions do not say that the new account transfers apps, music, films, TV shows, books, balances, subscriptions or purchase history from the old one.
Use a second account only when you understand the separation it creates. Purchases remain associated with the account that made them, and switching repeatedly between accounts can make updates, subscriptions and family sharing harder to manage. Preserve access to the original account and its downloaded content before creating another one.
Quick Recap
What will not solve a storefront mismatch
- A VPN: changing an IP address does not change the country or region recorded on your Apple Account and does not restore a title that is unavailable in the active storefront.
- Deleting and reinstalling an app: this can remove a working local copy when the app is no longer listed in the destination store. Download first and keep the installed copy until access is confirmed.
- Buying unrelated gift cards or accessories: these are not Apple’s documented solution for clearing a balance or transferring purchases. Follow the account and storefront steps instead.
- Assuming Family Sharing overrides regional licensing: purchase sharing can share eligible purchases, but it is not a blanket way to obtain every country-specific app or media title.
A practical decision guide
| Your situation | Best-supported next step | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You are moving and want to keep essential content. | Download and test essentials, clear balance and pending activity, then change the existing account’s region. | Some titles may not be available in the new storefront. |
| You have not moved yet and a title is important. | Redownload it while the original storefront is active and keep the device copy. | A purchase record alone does not guarantee later redownload. |
| You cannot provide a destination payment method. | Wait until physically in the new region and consider creating a new Apple Account, as Apple describes. | The new account is not documented as carrying over earlier purchases. |
| You belong to Family Sharing. | Check the organizer and Purchase Sharing status before changing region. | Leaving or disabling sharing can remove access to other members’ purchases. |
| An app is missing after the change. | Check whether it remains listed in the destination App Store and retain any installed copy. | Apple does not promise that every previously purchased app remains downloadable. |
Final checklist
- Important apps and media are downloaded on a device you will keep.
- Downloaded items have been opened or played successfully.
- Apple Account balance has been spent.
- Blocking subscriptions have ended, not merely been set to stop renewing.
- Memberships, rentals, Season Passes, pre-orders and refunds are complete.
- Family Sharing restrictions have been checked.
- A destination payment method and billing address are ready if Apple requests them.
- You understand that purchase history and current storefront availability are different things.
