To accept UPI at a shop, register with a merchant payment provider, link the business’s receiving bank account, and display the merchant-issued QR code at checkout. A soundbox or POS device is optional; online and remote payments may call for a gateway, dynamic QR, or payment links instead. Check the provider’s current onboarding, fees, settlement terms, and equipment charges for your account before launch.
Choose the payment setup that fits your business
Start by deciding where customers will pay. A merchant QR is the simplest starting point for an in-person counter. A website, app, or remote sale may need a payment gateway, dynamic QR, or payment link.

How to set up UPI acceptance at your shop
- Choose a merchant provider. Compare whether it supports your payment channels, the receiving account you intend to use, reporting and settlement tools, support, transaction fees, and any equipment costs.
- Register and complete the provider’s KYC process. The exact requirements depend on the provider and merchant. Paytm’s example flow asks for business details, PAN and Aadhaar information, and a linked bank account before generating a merchant QR or VPA; treat this as Paytm’s process, not a universal checklist. - Display the QR issued for your merchant account. Put it where customers can scan it at checkout. A standee or sticker is display hardware, not a prerequisite for accepting QR payments. Use the QR supplied for your merchant account rather than assuming a generic QR stand creates a payment destination for your business.
- Add equipment only if it helps your workflow. If staff need audible confirmations, compare compatible soundboxes and their recurring charges. PhonePe lists its SmartSpeaker; Paytm tells existing merchants to order Soundbox and QR merchandise through the merchant dashboard. See Paytm’s Soundbox support page.
- Confirm terms for your exact account before accepting payments. Check pricing, settlement and reporting arrangements, equipment charges, and support with the provider. Eligibility and terms can depend on the service, turnover category, and documentation.
Do you need a soundbox or POS device?
No. The merchant QR is the core in-store acceptance method; a soundbox and POS device are optional additions. A soundbox may be useful when staff need an audible confirmation at a busy counter. A POS device may suit a business seeking card acceptance or a broader set of payment options. Compare device compatibility and written current purchase, rental, deposit, and recurring-cost terms before ordering; comparable current device prices are not stated on the provider pages cited here.

What fees should you check?
Do not assume every merchant product or transaction has identical charges. Paytm for Business’s displayed SME pricing lists UPI MDR at 0% and defines a “Small Merchant” as having previous financial-year turnover below ₹20 lakh. These are Paytm’s published figures for its listed pricing categories, not a guarantee for every service or merchant; confirm current applicability for your account on Paytm for Business pricing.
Paytm’s QR fee FAQ says merchant QR UPI payments are generally zero-charge when routed directly to a bank account, while noting that fees may vary by provider and transaction conditions. Check the provider’s current terms for your route and account: Paytm’s QR payment fee FAQ.

Questions to ask the provider before signing up
- Which business details and KYC documents are needed for this account?
- Which receiving bank account will be linked, and what settlement and transaction-reporting tools are included?
- What fees apply to the specific QR, gateway, or other payment service and transaction route I will use?
- What are the current purchase, rental, deposit, and recurring charges for any QR stand, soundbox, or POS device?
- Which payment methods and channels are supported, and what help is available if a payment or settlement needs attention?
PhonePe says its offline merchants can accept payments from major UPI apps and cites access to its “72+ crore user base.” That is PhonePe’s platform claim, not an independent estimate of customers any particular shop will reach. See PhonePe’s offline merchant page.
