Some games let you clean up everything after the credits; others permanently close opportunities when you pass a choice, encounter, collectible, ending, or online event.
Define what “100%” means before you start
“100%” is not a universal standard. One player may mean every achievement on a platform. Another may mean an in-game completion percentage, a platinum trophy, every base-game trophy, or every trophy including downloadable content (DLC). Those targets can require different routes and different amounts of replay.

Write down your target before launching the game:
- Platform: PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, or another service.
- Edition: Standard, definitive, remastered, or ultimate edition.
- Scope: Base game only, or base game plus each DLC package.
- Completion system: Platform achievements and trophies, in-game completion, or both.
Do not assume lists match between editions. Remedy Entertainment says the achievement and trophy lists for CONTROL Ultimate Edition are identical on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, but that statement applies to that edition and cannot be generalized to every game.

Open the platform’s own achievement list
Start with the list attached to your account, not a screenshot or an old checklist. Record every requirement that appears to involve a branch, a particular difficulty, a hidden area, a collectible set, a multiplayer session, a timer, or a specific ending. Platform lists reveal the exact wording and scope of the target you are pursuing.

Find a current, game-specific roadmap
Use a recent achievement roadmap, trophy guide, or missable-achievement guide for the exact platform and edition. Check its publication or update date and read the opening notes for patches, DLC, and version differences. A community-maintained discovery list can help you find possible missables, but its labels and counts can change. Cross-check every irreversible requirement against current, title-specific guidance.
Classify the risks
Put each requirement into a small risk register. This is more useful than trying to memorize an entire guide.

Choose a route that matches your tolerance for spoilers
There is no single correct way to pursue a completion run. The practical choice is between accepting some spoiler exposure now or accepting replay risk later.

Reader discussions commonly describe both blind-first and guide-led approaches. Treat the trade-off honestly: a checklist protects progress but can turn exploration into task management; a blind run protects surprise but may require a second, more directed playthrough. If the roadmap identifies only a few low-spoiler danger points, note those moments and play normally. If it identifies many irreversible conditions, decide whether a guided first run is preferable to repeating the entire story.

Build a progress system before playing
Use two records, not one
Keep the platform achievement list as the authoritative status display and a game-specific checklist for conditions the platform cannot explain. The platform list tells you what remains locked; the checklist records the route, location, order, or setup that makes an achievement possible.
For each requirement, record:
- The exact achievement name and platform wording.
- The chapter, region, mission, or quest where it can be completed.
- The trigger that makes it available.
- Any action that can permanently remove it.
- Whether it is safe to postpone until after the story.
- Whether it belongs to base game or DLC.
Use simple status labels
A useful notation is planned, available, completed, verified, and blocked. Mark an item verified only after the platform records the unlock or the guide confirms the required state. Do not mark an achievement complete merely because you performed what seemed like the right action.
Separate spoiler levels
Keep the first page of your notes to warnings such as “make a manual save before the council decision” or “finish the arena task before leaving the district.” Put names, outcomes, and story explanations on later pages. This lets you consult the information needed to avoid a miss without reading every plot consequence.

Play the first hours with a missable checklist
- Start with the lowest-risk activities. Learn the game’s saving, chapter, and fast-travel systems before committing to optional objectives.
- Save before an irreversible decision. Use a manual save or a separate slot when the game permits it. Keep the slot until the achievement unlocks or the guide confirms that the condition is secure.
- Read only the relevant warning. If a guide says an encounter must happen before a mission, follow that timing instruction without reading unrelated story sections.
- Complete one-time activities before advancing. Finish flagged side quests, conversations, collectibles, and encounters before crossing the stated point of no return.
- Verify the result. Wait for the platform notification or check the achievement list. A save/reload may not restore every hidden flag, so never assume that reloading automatically repairs a missed condition.
- Record what changed. Mark the task complete, note the save slot used, and continue only after the state is clear.
Handle the main missable categories correctly
Branching choices and faction paths
When an achievement depends on a choice, identify the earliest decision that affects it, not just the final conversation. Create a manual save before that decision if the game supports separate saves. Follow the guide’s required sequence, then verify the unlock before overwriting the backup. If two outcomes are required, determine whether the game permits a reload for the second outcome or whether each requires a fresh run; do not infer this from another game.

Collectibles and exploration
First establish whether the game has chapter select, free roam, or a post-credit world state. If it does, you can often defer ordinary collectibles and avoid interrupting the story. If the guide marks an item as permanently missable, collect it before the relevant mission advances. Keep separate notes for “collected” and “achievement unlocked,” because a set may require an additional interaction after the final item.
Difficulty achievements
Read the exact condition before selecting a difficulty. Some games require a full campaign on one setting; others require only a final encounter or prohibit changing the setting after the run begins. Record the selected difficulty in your checklist and avoid changing it until the roadmap confirms that the requirement is complete.
Online, timed, and multiplayer requirements
Check these before investing dozens of offline hours. A requirement may depend on an active server, another player, a real-world event, or a limited-time mode. Confirm current availability and any platform subscription requirement. If the task is discontinued or the player population is too low, it can define whether 100% is realistically achievable on your edition.
Multiple endings
Map ending conditions early. A “choose the ending” achievement may actually depend on relationship levels, optional missions, hidden counters, or earlier dialogue. Use a separate save before the final sequence only after the guide identifies the true branching point. If the game supports chapter replay, verify that replay preserves the necessary world state before relying on it.

Do not assume post-game cleanup
Post-game behavior is game- and edition-specific. Some titles return you to the world after the credits; others place you at a pre-final checkpoint, remove access to a region, or require a new run. A guide that says “clean up later” must be trusted for your exact edition and update.
CONTROL Ultimate Edition is a documented cleanup-friendly example. Remedy Entertainment’s official “100% Achievements & Trophies Guide” states: “There are absolutely no missable trophies in the Ultimate Edition; you can return to the Oldest House after the credits roll to clean up any remaining tasks.” That guidance is specific to the Ultimate Edition. It is not evidence that every game, or even every edition of another game, behaves the same way.
After the credits, follow this order:
- Open the platform list and identify every remaining achievement.
- Open the roadmap’s cleanup section and confirm that it covers your edition and installed updates.
- Return to the world only if the guide confirms that the required areas and systems remain available.
- Complete ordinary exploration and collectibles first, then tackle route-sensitive or online requirements.
- Check DLC separately so that a completed base-game list is not mistaken for full ownership-scope completion.
Examples show why game-specific checking matters
Community-maintained missable lists vary sharply by title. The listed examples include Metro 2033 Redux with one reported missable achievement and Graveyard Keeper with multiple missables across the base game and listed DLC. These are examples of variation, not a statistic about how often games contain missables. The counts and labels on a curator page can change, so verify them against a current guide for the particular game.

The action happened but the achievement did not unlock
- Check the platform list for the exact wording; similar names can describe different conditions.
- Confirm that you were playing the intended edition and that the achievement belongs to the base game or DLC you own.
- Review the guide for hidden prerequisites, such as an earlier quest, difficulty setting, or ending condition.
- Wait for synchronization if the platform normally delays notifications, then check the account list rather than relying on an in-game message.
- Reload only if the game’s guide confirms that the relevant state can be retried. A reload is not a universal recovery method.
The guide and your game disagree
Stop before advancing. Compare the guide’s platform, edition, DLC scope, and update date with your installation. Patch changes can alter quest timing, achievement triggers, or the availability of an exploit used by an older walkthrough. Prefer a current, title-specific roadmap over a generic list.
The requirement is online or time-limited
Verify that servers, events, matchmaking, and any required companion service are still operating. If access depends on another player or a calendar window, complete it before treating offline cleanup as the remaining work.

Play blind when the game-specific roadmap confirms that missables are absent or limited to warnings you can tolerate, and when preserving discovery matters more than avoiding a possible replay. Use a spoiler-light checklist when a handful of irreversible moments threaten an otherwise natural playthrough. Follow a full roadmap from the start when the game has many branches, strict ordering, separate endings, difficult-to-repeat encounters, or online requirements that make a second run costly.
The goal is not to obey a universal completion formula. It is to match your route to the game’s actual achievement structure, your edition, and the amount of story information you are willing to see before discovering it yourself.
