College chats often mix deadlines and event details with jokes, side conversations, and later changes of plan. tl;dr is designed to pull out actionable items—such as a due date, event, or revised plan—and present them in a compact digest and calendar file.

How it handles revisions and conflicting messages
A chat may first announce one deadline and later move it. Simply extracting every date could leave a student with two contradictory calendar entries. Singh describes tl;dr as trying to keep one event and track its history as new messages update or cancel it.
The reported pipeline parses the export, divides messages into overlapping windows around pauses in the conversation, extracts candidate items, reconciles whether an item is new, updated, or canceled, resolves dates, and renders the outputs. Overlapping windows are intended to preserve context across message segments.
Singh says the project added reconciliation after encountering cases where the model invented IDs or attached one event’s details to another event with a similar title. The logic treats an ID from the model as a clue rather than definitive proof; when the match is uncertain, it prefers showing a possible duplicate over silently combining unrelated events. This matters because structured output and stable IDs do not guarantee that an event’s date or description belongs to the right item.

What local processing means—and does not prove
The project is described as using Gemma 4 (gemma4:e4b) through Ollama, with temperature 0, seed 0, and output constrained to a JSON schema. Singh says that, after downloading the model, processing can run on the user’s machine without an internet connection or a cloud API. He describes the benefits as “privacy, cost and control.”

Local inference can keep the workflow from sending classmates’ messages to an outside model service, according to the project description. That is not an independent security audit: it does not establish how every version, installation, or surrounding application handles data. A WhatsApp export still contains other people’s communications, so obtain appropriate consent and store the file and generated calendar output carefully.
The available description does not state a minimum hardware requirement or identify a tested laptop model. It therefore does not support a specific computer recommendation. The linked repository’s current installation steps, license, and hardware requirements were not independently verified, so this account does not provide setup instructions.
What the author’s evaluation found
Singh reports a hand-labeled evaluation on seven items from a synthetic sample chat, with the prompt frozen. These are project-specific results, not a benchmark of local models or chat summarizers generally. Each item represents about 14 percentage points, and Singh says the prompt had been tuned on the sample chat.

In this sample, thinking on found more labeled items but took longer and had lower precision; its date and time results varied between runs. Thinking off returned identical results across nine runs, but missed items. Singh also says two attempted prompt changes made the results worse and were reverted. With only seven labeled items and a prompt tuned on the sample, these figures cannot establish which mode is generally better or how the tool would perform on other chats.

What happened on a real chat
Singh also reports one run on a real chat containing 1,178 messages split across 61 windows. The project found 15 dated events and marked 18 items as having unclear dates. The author describes several problems in that run:
- Recurring events with generic titles were merged across different months.
- Numeric dates such as
01.12.2025were not parsed. - The summary omitted the year, hiding a date that was likely assigned to the wrong year.
Singh lists expiring past items, printing the year, and parsing numeric dates as planned work for v0.2. Those are plans, not confirmed capabilities of the version described.
How to use an output safely
Use the digest as a way to find candidate tasks, not as an authoritative record. The project says each card includes source message numbers, which lets a reader return to the relevant parts of the conversation. Verify the message and its timestamp before acting on a deadline or importing an event.

- Check relative expressions against the date and time of the message that used them.
- Look for later messages that revise or cancel the item.
- Inspect generic recurring event names carefully; similar titles may refer to separate dates.
- Confirm the year and numeric dates rather than relying on an abbreviated summary.
- Treat an unclear date as unresolved instead of guessing.
Who may find tl;dr useful
The project addresses a specific annoyance: important college plans can be hard to retrieve from a busy group chat. Its local approach and message references are thoughtful design choices, while the small evaluation and reported real-chat issues mean the calendar file should be reviewed rather than trusted automatically. It is best understood as an experimental assistant for surfacing likely events—not a replacement for checking the original messages.
