Short answer: Titan did not use one magical “sonar system” to do everything. Its 2023 deep-water link used EvoLogics acoustic equipment for text messages and tracking telemetry, while onboard sonar interfaces were a separate system whose exact model and final-dive use have not been established in the official record reviewed here.
That distinction matters. The acoustic link could report Titan’s position and depth and let occupants exchange messages with the surface tender. It was not the same thing as sonar imaging, and there is no official evidence that sonar caused the hull failure.

What people call Titan’s “sonar” was mostly an acoustic communications and tracking link
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) describes an EvoLogics acoustic system used during the June 18, 2023 expedition. Its documented jobs were communications and tracking:
- Text messaging: Titan’s occupants could exchange text messages with the support vessel Polar Prince.
- Tracking telemetry: Transponders attached to Titan and acoustic transducers suspended from the surface vessel supplied position and depth information.
The NTSB’s final report says, “Additionally, the system allowed the submersible occupants to exchange text messages with the tender.” In plain language, Titan and the surface ship were sending short digital messages through water acoustically, while the same broader setup helped the crew follow where the submersible was and how deep it had gone.

How the final-dive communications link operated
Acoustic messages underwater
Radio signals that work in air do not travel efficiently through seawater over the distances involved in a deep-ocean dive. Titan therefore relied on acoustic equipment for its regular underwater link. The record identifies EvoLogics equipment for the 2023 system, but it does not provide a complete public specification for every component or its data rate.
Position and depth telemetry
Acoustic transponders on Titan responded to equipment on the support vessel. Those exchanges allowed the surface team to receive tracking information, including position and depth. This is tracking, not a picture of the seabed or a visual “scan” of the wreck.
A seabed navigation option that was not used
The NTSB’s Nautical Operations factual report says an EvoLogics transponder could have been placed on the seabed. That arrangement could have supported navigation without instructions from the surface tender. The bottom transponder was never used on the expedition described in the report.

Other radios were not replacements for the deep-water link
Titan also carried a VHF radio for communicating with surface personnel and an Iridium satellite beacon intended to help locate it after surfacing. Those devices should not be treated as substitutes for the acoustic text-and-tracking system during a deep dive: VHF is a surface-oriented radio service, and satellite beacons require the antenna to reach the surface.
What happened when the final recorded exchange stopped
Communication checks were made every 10 to 15 minutes. At 10:47 on June 18, 2023, while Titan was at 11,032 feet (3,363 meters), OceanGate received a message saying that Titan was dropping two weights. Polar Prince acknowledged the message at 10:48 and received no response afterward.
The expedition plan said Titan was to begin ascending 60 minutes after surface communications were lost. That is the written procedure reported by the NTSB; it does not, by itself, explain why contact stopped or establish what the occupants knew at the time.

So what was Titan’s actual sonar?
The official material confirms that Titan’s media computer interfaced with sonar systems, so sonar was among the submersible’s onboard systems. However, the passages reviewed by the NTSB do not name the sonar model, describe its transducer arrangement in sufficient detail, or document what its display showed during the final dive.

That means several popular claims go beyond the evidence. The record does not establish a precise sonar make or model, a published range or accuracy figure, or that sonar detected—or failed to detect—the condition that preceded the loss of the submersible.
An earlier sonar failure is a separate event
In its account of a 2021 expedition, the NTSB records that “the sonar died.” That dive also involved a failed electric motor, a lost aft fairing and flickering lights. It is evidence of a reported sonar failure on that earlier expedition, not proof that the same hardware or fault recurred on June 18, 2023.

Onboard sonar versus the sonar used in the search
These are easy to confuse because both involve sound underwater:
| System | Primary purpose | What the official record identifies |
|---|---|---|
| Titan–surface acoustic link | Text messages, position and depth telemetry | EvoLogics equipment in the 2023 configuration; transponders on Titan and transducers on the support vessel |
| Titan’s onboard sonar interfaces | Acoustic sensing or imaging from the submersible | Interfaces are described, but the exact model and final-dive operation are not established in the reviewed passages |
| Search-and-rescue sonar | Help locate objects after Titan was missing | Sonar buoys, sonar-capable ships and other assets were used during the response; ROVs also searched |
Search equipment belonged to the rescue operation, not to Titan. On June 22, 2023, the ROV Odysseus located a debris field consistent with Titan near its last known position. That finding came from the response effort and should not be described as Titan finding itself with its own sonar.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
- The 2023 acoustic system supported text messaging between Titan and Polar Prince.
- The same general acoustic setup supplied tracking telemetry, including position and depth.
- Checks occurred every 10 to 15 minutes, with the last recorded exchange at 10:47–10:48 at 11,032 feet (3,363 meters).
- The written plan called for ascent to begin 60 minutes after communications were lost.
- The exact onboard sonar model and its use during the final dive are not established by the official passages reviewed.
- Nothing in those passages shows that sonar caused the catastrophic hull failure.
The unglamorous but accurate answer is that Titan’s best-documented “sonar” function was an acoustic modem-and-tracking network. It helped the surface team exchange short messages and monitor the submersible’s reported position and depth. That is technically different from a sonar imager, and the public record remains incomplete about Titan’s specific onboard sonar hardware.
