How Tidal Energy Turbines Generate Electricity

Tidal-stream turbines generate electricity by placing underwater rotors in fast-moving tidal currents. The current pushes the blades, the rotor turns a shaft, and a generator converts that rotation into electrical power. Power electronics condition the output, and subsea cables carry it to shore.

The tides are driven by the Moon, the Sun and Earth’s rotation, so their timing is predictable. Useful generation still depends on local current speed, seabed conditions, device design and operating decisions. A barrage or lagoon is a different technology: it generates from a water-level difference rather than directly from a free-flowing current.

What energy does a tidal-stream turbine capture?

A tidal-stream turbine captures the kinetic energy of moving seawater. As a tide flows through a channel, strait or inlet, water passes through the rotor. The force of that flow produces torque on the blades, just as wind turns an airborne turbine, but seawater is far denser than air. That density allows a compact rotor to intercept substantial energy while imposing heavy loads on blades, bearings, foundations and support structures.

The turbine does not generate power merely because sea level rises and falls. It must be in a moving current. Coastal geography matters because constrictions can accelerate water and concentrate the flow enough for a commercial project. A location with a large tidal range may not be suitable for a stream turbine if its currents are too slow or the seabed cannot support installation.

Output follows the current available at the rotor. Tidal timing can be forecast years in advance, but the amount of electricity at a particular moment varies with the local tide, turbulence, depth, blockage from nearby structures, maintenance and the turbine’s control settings.

How is tidal energy converted into electricity?

  1. The tide creates a current. Gravitational forces from the Moon and Sun, combined with Earth’s rotation, move seawater. Coastlines and underwater channels shape that motion into streams that can be faster than the surrounding water.
  2. Water meets the rotor. The turbine is installed in the current, usually on the seabed or on another marine support. Water flows across the blades and applies lift and drag forces.
  3. The blades turn the rotor. Blade geometry converts part of the flow’s force into rotation. An axial-flow machine points its rotor broadly into the current; a cross-flow machine uses a different orientation and can be arranged to accept changing flow directions.
  4. The rotor drives a shaft. The rotating hub transfers mechanical power through a shaft. Some machines use a gearbox to increase rotational speed before the generator; others use direct drive and connect the rotor to a larger, slower-speed generator.
  5. The generator produces electricity. Relative motion between the generator’s magnetic field and windings converts mechanical rotation into electrical energy. The raw output’s voltage, frequency and waveform depend on the generator and its operating speed.
  6. Power electronics condition the output. Converters and transformers can regulate voltage and frequency, combine variable-speed output and prepare electricity for collection. The exact equipment depends on the turbine and the project’s electrical design.
  7. Subsea cables collect and export power. An underwater cable carries electricity from the device, or from an array of devices, toward shore. At a landfall or substation, further transformation and protection equipment connect the project to the local grid.
  8. Controls protect the machine. Sensors and control systems monitor current, rotor speed, electrical conditions and mechanical loads. The turbine can change operating settings, reduce output or stop when currents, faults or maintenance requirements make operation unsafe.

Why tidal generation is predictable but not constant

Tidal cycles are governed by celestial mechanics, making the timing of incoming and outgoing flows highly forecastable. That predictability is an advantage over weather-dependent resources whose timing is harder to know far ahead.

Forecasting the tide does not guarantee a fixed megawatt output. Water speed changes through each tidal cycle, and the usable current at the rotor depends on depth, channel shape, turbulence and interactions with the seabed and nearby turbines. A device may also be unavailable during inspection, cable work or a protective shutdown. Developers therefore model a site’s current over many cycles rather than treating a published turbine rating as continuous generation.

Turbine designs and how they handle changing flow

Axial-flow turbines

Axial-flow turbines have blades facing the incoming current, broadly resembling an underwater wind turbine. They can be mounted on a gravity base, monopile, frame or other seabed structure. Depending on the site, the nacelle or rotor may be fixed in one direction, turned by a yaw system, or designed to operate through both directions of a reversing tide.

Cross-flow turbines

Cross-flow designs orient their blades differently from axial machines. Their geometry can make them suitable for currents that reverse direction, although the detailed performance, support requirements and control strategy vary by device. “Cross-flow” is a family of arrangements, not a guarantee that every model works equally well in every reversing current.

Open and shrouded rotors

An open rotor exposes blades directly to the surrounding flow. A shrouded or ducted design surrounds the rotor with a structure intended to guide or accelerate water through it. The shroud adds mass, surface area and installation complexity, so its value must be demonstrated at the specific site.

Bottom-mounted and other supports

Seabed-mounted turbines are fixed to the bottom with foundations or gravity structures. Other concepts use floating or suspended support systems, where moorings and dynamic cables become central engineering concerns. Support choice depends on water depth, seabed geology, vessel access, current loads and how the device will be installed and recovered.

Gearbox or direct drive

A gearbox can raise shaft speed so a smaller generator operates efficiently, but it adds gears, lubrication and another set of components exposed to marine loads. Direct-drive systems avoid that gearbox but generally require a larger low-speed generator. Neither arrangement is universally superior; reliability, mass, maintenance access and cost determine the appropriate choice.

Where tidal turbines can operate

A viable site needs a strong, repeatable current, sufficient water depth and a route for exporting electricity. Straits, headlands, channels and inlets are often investigated because their restricted geometry concentrates tidal flow. A resource assessment measures current speed and direction through the water column, then combines those data with seabed surveys, navigation constraints and grid-connection options.

  • Current resource: Flow must be energetic enough to justify installation, but extreme currents can increase structural and maintenance loads.
  • Seabed and water depth: Foundations, anchors and installation vessels need compatible geology and working space.
  • Marine access: Operators need a safe method to deploy, retrieve and service equipment in a corrosive, high-force environment.
  • Cable route: Export cables must avoid unacceptable seabed, fishing, shipping and environmental conflicts while reaching a suitable landfall.
  • Grid connection: The receiving network must accept the project’s voltage, fault level and variable output without unacceptable power-quality effects.
  • Permitting and other users: Shipping lanes, fishing grounds, protected habitats and communications infrastructure can limit the usable area.

Tidal-stream turbines versus tidal-range power

Both approaches use the movement of seawater, but they capture different forms of energy and require different infrastructure.

Characteristic Tidal-stream turbine Barrage or lagoon
Energy captured Kinetic energy in a free-flowing current Energy associated with a water-level difference between a basin and the sea
Main equipment Underwater rotor, drivetrain, generator, support and subsea cable Large barrier or enclosed lagoon, sluices, gates and turbines
How water reaches the turbine Natural current passes through the rotor Controlled flow enters or leaves the basin through turbine passages
Typical site requirement Strong current in a suitable channel or coastal location Coastline where a basin can be impounded and a useful level difference created
Power export Subsea collection and export cables carry electricity toward shore Generation equipment is integrated into the barrage or lagoon works, with grid connection on or near land
Principal engineering issue Marine loads, corrosion, access, foundations and subsea cables Large civil structures, gates, sediment management and effects on the impounded basin

A barrage or lagoon should therefore not be described as the same mechanism as a free-stream turbine. The first stores and releases water to create a head; the second extracts energy directly from moving water.

Why marine engineering is difficult

Seawater is corrosive, and tidal currents apply repeated forces to every exposed component. Blades must resist fatigue and impact; seals and bearings must remain reliable; electrical equipment must be protected from water ingress; and foundations must tolerate cyclic loading from currents, waves and turbulence. A design that works in a controlled test environment still has to survive years of biofouling, sediment movement and limited access at sea.

Maintenance strategy is part of the power plant, not an afterthought. A project may need specialist vessels, weather windows, lifting equipment and a way to recover a turbine to shore. Every retrieval interrupts generation and adds cost. Designers balance robust, heavier components against the expense of installing and servicing them.

The turbine’s rated capacity is also not the same as annual energy delivered. Rating describes the electrical output under specified operating conditions. Actual production reflects the site’s current distribution, losses in the drivetrain and cables, curtailment, outages and the time spent in slower parts of the tidal cycle.

How electricity gets from the seabed to the grid

In a single-device project, a subsea cable may run directly to shore. In an array, several turbines feed an underwater collection network before a larger export cable carries combined power to land. Transformers raise voltage to reduce losses over the export distance, while switchgear and protection systems isolate faults and protect both the equipment and the grid.

Because tidal flow changes, the electrical system must manage changing real and reactive power. Converters can smooth some of the generator’s variable-speed behavior, but they cannot create energy when the current is weak. Grid studies determine whether additional controls, storage, reinforcement or operating limits are needed.

Environmental effects require site-specific assessment

Tidal projects are not automatically impact-free, and a single universal impact rate cannot be applied to every turbine. Potential interactions depend on the device, its speed and rotor size, the number of units, the location and the surrounding ecosystem.

  • Marine animals: Fish, marine mammals and other animals may encounter moving blades, support structures or vessel traffic. Risk assessment considers species present, behavior, visibility and operating conditions.
  • Underwater noise: Construction, vessels, foundations and rotating machinery can produce sound. Monitoring and mitigation are chosen for the species and habitat at the proposed site.
  • Electromagnetic fields: Export and inter-array cables create fields around energized conductors. Their significance depends on cable design, burial, shielding and the sensitivity of local organisms.
  • Water quality and materials: Coatings, lubricants, corrosion products and accidental releases must be controlled, especially where a device contains fluids or sacrificial materials.
  • Flow and sediment transport: Extracting energy and adding structures can alter local flow patterns or sediment movement. The scale and direction of any change must be modeled and measured for the project.

Environmental review should examine construction, operation, maintenance and decommissioning rather than focusing only on rotor collisions. Monitoring plans can be adapted if observations differ from predictions.

How to interpret project-capacity claims

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has described Scotland’s MeyGen project as potentially reaching up to 398 MW when fully operational. That figure is a project-capacity statement, not proof that 398 MW is currently installed or generating. Project phases, construction schedules and operating status can change, so the number should be presented with its “potential when fully operational” qualification and checked against current project information before publication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More generally, distinguish among a turbine’s nameplate rating, an array’s planned capacity, capacity already installed and electricity actually delivered. Those figures answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.

A practical checklist for evaluating a tidal-turbine proposal

  1. Identify whether the proposal is a tidal-stream device or a tidal-range project.
  2. Confirm the measured current resource at the proposed depth and through complete tidal cycles.
  3. Check the rotor orientation, bidirectional-flow capability, support type and drivetrain arrangement.
  4. Review installation, retrieval and maintenance plans, including vessel and weather-window assumptions.
  5. Trace the collection and export cables to the shore connection and verify the receiving grid’s requirements.
  6. Separate rated, planned, installed and delivered capacity in every specification.
  7. Read the environmental assessment for the actual device, site and project scale rather than relying on generic claims.
  8. Ask how corrosion, biofouling, fatigue, cable damage and extreme-current events will be detected and repaired.

Bottom line

A tidal-stream turbine turns the motion of seawater into electricity in a sequence of mechanical and electrical conversions: current pushes blades, the rotor turns a shaft, the generator produces power, electronics condition it, and subsea cables export it to shore. Predictable tides make the resource schedulable, but site-specific currents, marine engineering, grid connection and environmental constraints determine whether a particular project is practical. Tidal-range systems use a different water-level mechanism and should be evaluated separately.
