Ticks attach in two stages: their mouthparts anchor mechanically in the skin, then saliva-derived cement forms around the entry point and reinforces the hold. A 2024 study offers a molecular clue to how that cement can become sticky: one protein from the blacklegged tick can separate into protein-rich droplets that age toward a gel-like material.
How do ticks stick to your skin?
In hard ticks, attachment starts with the mouthparts, not with glue. Sensory palps help the tick position itself; the chelicerae cut into tissue, and the barbed hypostome penetrates the skin and acts as a channel for blood. Saliva-derived cement then forms around the mouthparts and the incision, adding a material anchor to the mechanical one. The general sequence is described in the 2024 Nature Chemistry study and a review of tick cement.
This two-part arrangement helps explain why “tick glue” is an incomplete description: the cement reinforces a hold already established by penetrating mouthparts. Hard ticks can remain attached for days, with duration varying by species and life stage. Saliva exposure during prolonged feeding can also matter for pathogen transmission, but the protein study did not measure transmission or disease outcomes.

What is tick cement?
Tick cement is a saliva-derived material that hardens around the mouthparts and skin entry site in many hard ticks. It is not a single universal substance. Reviews describe cement cones as mixtures that can include hardened glycine-rich proteins, lipids and carbohydrates; additional protein classes have been detected in some species. Cement cones are characteristic of most hard ticks, but have not been observed in every Ixodes species, and cement production differs among tick lineages.
The diversity is visible in saliva studies: a 2019 analysis of the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) identified 67 glycine-rich proteins, 60 of which were secreted in abundance within the first four days. Those counts apply to that species and study, not to ticks generally. The PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases paper reports those findings.

What did the protein-cement study find?
A focused test of one tick protein
Ganar and colleagues studied tick-GRP77, a mature, 77-amino-acid fragment of a glycine-rich protein from the hard tick Ixodes scapularis. The sequence is about 26% glycine and approximately 44% non-polar amino acids, including glycine. The researchers synthesized the fragment and tested it in controlled laboratory solutions; they did not test every protein in natural cement.
Salt and evaporation produced protein-rich condensates
In evaporation assays, water loss concentrated the protein until protein-rich condensates appeared. Salt also promoted phase separation, a process in which a solution separates into regions with different concentrations of its components. Experiments using protein fragments and mutants implicated arginine and aromatic amino-acid residues in this behavior. The authors identified cation–π and π–π interactions as important in GRP77’s phase separation.

The condensates aged and showed adhesion
Over time, the condensates shifted toward gel-like aggregates. Adhesion measurements found that the condensates were sticky. The authors also reported protein-rich condensates in natural tick saliva, a finding that supports the biological relevance of the laboratory results without showing that the simplified assays reproduce all the conditions or components of cement in a feeding tick.
The paper appeared online on 29 November 2024 in Nature Chemistry and in the journal’s 2025 volume, 17, pages 186–197. Its contribution is a physical-chemistry explanation for how one tick protein can develop adhesive properties, not a complete account of how ticks attach.
What the study does—and does not—explain
The results suggest that phase separation and gradual ageing of a glycine-rich protein may help give tick cement its material properties. They do not establish that GRP77 alone makes natural cement sticky, that all tick species use the same mechanism, or that this protein explains the full attachment process. Natural cement contains other tick and host proteins as well as non-protein components, and its composition varies.
For context, the 2024 paper cites earlier work reporting that glycine-rich proteins made up 19% of identified cement-cone protein sequences. That figure comes from the earlier cement-cone study as reported by the 2024 authors; it is not a measurement from the GRP77 phase-separation experiments.

Could tick cement lead to new adhesives or tick-control methods?
The authors point to possible future directions, including tissue sealants and tick-control strategies. These are research possibilities, not products or treatments demonstrated by the study. It provides no human clinical evidence, tests no tick-removal intervention and establishes no commercial tissue sealant. Its central result is narrower: under controlled conditions, one protein fragment from I. scapularis forms ageing, adhesive condensates.
